Our nation’s history has had a total of 44 presidents including having the very first African American president, Barack Obama, but out those 44 presidents there is one that stands out as a great president. Franklin D. Roosevelt was one of the great American President in our nation's pastime, FDR became our 32nd president in 1933. Roosevelt was born in Hyde Park, New York in 1882 to a wealthy family to James Roosevelt and Sarah Ann Delano Roosevelt and was the only child that they had. His education involved going to an all boy school called Groton School located in Massachusetts in 1896. The school was mostly made up boys who were excellent in sports but sadly Roosevelt did not excel in sports. After graduating from Groton School in 1900, he decided to go to Harvard and worked as editor of the Harvard newspaper and after three years at Harvard he managed to get his degree. During his Harvard years FDR met his wife in his last year of Harvard. Her name was Eleanor Roosevelt ,who was also the niece of our 26th president, Theodore Roosevelt. Roosevelt and Eleanor married each other on March 17, 1905 and as they settled together they had a total of six children, five boys and a daughter. But sadly, one of his children died in his infancy but it did not affect Roosevelt a lot. As years passed …show more content…
by, two of his children would play a role in Franklin D. Roosevelt’s presidency, and that would be his only daughter Anna and his youngest son, John. Some of the things that the children did during FDR’s presidency was comfort when he needed it when having a tough day at work and help him with his Polio Disease. It was during the year 1921 where roosevelt contracted the Polio disease and it happened during the summer when he was in vacation. When, he was in a yacht he fell overboard and into the water in the Bay of Fundy, after he was rescued he could not feel part of his body. Roosevelt also said that he felt lower back pains but, as day and days went on Roosevelt felt like he was losing the feeling of his legs and they became weaker and weaker. Suddenly one day he could not even hold his own when standing up, so Eleanor contacted a doctor. That first doctor claimed that there might a be a blood clot in his lower back and as days went on they got the feeling that was correct. Then, another doctor, Dr. Robert Lovett, came up with the conclusion that Roosevelt had Polio’s disease at the age of 39. Before his Polio’s disease, Roosevelt started to make some noise in politics. Before he went into the world of politics he went to Columbia Law school in 1907 passing the bar exam, after passing the bar exam he did not receive any degree. Though not receiving any degree he decided to learn law and corporate at Columbia, but he found that it was boring and did not decide study law and corporate anymore. In 1910 he established himself as a Democrat, which would lead him into breaking barriers for Democrats in the state senate position. Roosevelt decided, after leaving law school, to pursue another goal in his life , which was become a State senate. And he did, he was elected as the State Senate for New York in 1910 and he had also won the battle for Democrats becoming the first Democrat to be elected as a State Senate in New York in over 32 years, Roosevelt would only serve 3 years as the State Senate of New york. After serving three years at the State Senate position he turned his focus into become more engaged into politics which would lead him into getting into a new position in 1913. This also helped by ascending Roosevelt’s popularity rate that would help him in his future presidency run. His new position was now the Assistant Secretary of the Navy and Roosevelt got help by president Woodrow Wilson rewarding this position to him because throughout Wilson’s presidency run, Roosevelt supported him at the Democratic National Convention in 1912. As an Assistant Secretary of the Navy Roosevelt accomplished and was known for the North Sea Mine Barrage, which was to keep enemy submarines such as Germany away from countries such as Norway and Scotland, by using the North Sea and putting mines there to protect them during WW1, and it was successful. Next, after serving 7 years as an Assistant Secretary of the Navy he moved on to accomplish another goal as serving as an vice-presidential runner up mate of James M. Cox. Roosevelt was making noise everywhere with politics and suddenly that came to play a huge role for him especially being named as the Assistant Secretary of the Navy, because of the idea he came up with the North Sea Mine Barrage, which had earned Roosevelt tons of respect from that. Due to Wilson’s presidency many Democrats had to campaign a lot, so that democrats would not lose the battle for Congress and the White House. The thing that caused this was The League of Nation which did not work, which resulted in FDR working even harder than before like doing ten speeches in one day. But the work did not pay off for both of them, leaving Congress to be controlled by Republicans and by the president being Republican in 1920. On the other hand the hard work did pay off for Roosevelt, by getting the attention of the nation with the speeches. From the positions that he has held his popularity rate had started to ascend and was becoming to be more and more known by the nation. Meanwhile, Roosevelt was heading toward another accomplishment and that was to be the Governor of New York. Even though he got diagnosed with Polio in the summer of 1921, Roosevelt did not let the disease hold him back from running for the position and besides from that Roosevelt was not even sure that he wanted to get back into politics due to his health and the thought that, that year’s election would be won by all Republicans. Roosevelt made sure that he could let his voice be heard during every campaign he did with using his disease as a tool. For example he used his steel braces by holding them firmly when making a comment about a topic, which showed the people of New York that he was not weak due to his disease. At the end, Roosevelt ended up winning the race for Governor of New York by a wide margin, besides from president Herbert Hoover winning the race for president. Roosevelt, was now seen as a worldwide leader because of his efforts and especially was now a worldwide leader for the national democratic leadership, in which the national democratic leadership was targeting Roosevelt as a candidate for president in 1932. Though Roosevelt would only serve two, two year terms, he went right to work. As the Governor of New York he helped the farming system in New York by cutting taxes on the farmers, and giving money for public education, and etc. Also during his term things turned out bad by, The Great Depression starting to show up in 1929 and Roosevelt quickly reacted by passing an act called the New York State Unemployment Relief Act to help the people affected by the stock market crash. As his term had started to wind down his focus was now on taking the president’s position. Roosevelt had enough of a chance and a huge lead even though he was not president yet or had ran any campaigns yet for president. The reason behind this was the Great Depression, the nation had come up with the conclusion that the Great Depression was the Republican’s fault. Eyeing the opportunity to yet accomplish another goal, he would not let this one get away from him. With Roosevelt’s personality and call to action for the The Great Depression during his presidency campaign run he was elected as our 32nd president and won in landslide defeating former president Herbert Hoover. Roosevelt took the office on March 4, 1933 and went right to work dealing with taking America and turn a nation from bad economy to a great economy, and also the duty of dealing with an huge enemy overseas in Germany. Entering the office for Roosevelt was not good for him, because he was put into a bad situation right away when he was elected. First off, during the 1930s the nation suffered through the Great Depression, in which a total of 13 million people lost jobs and the economy was in desperate need of some of fixing. But as always ,Roosevelt, managed to get through tough times and that was what made him the greatest president because, when America needed help he was there with a plan ready to help America. Roosevelt’s first job to deal with the Great Depression was to close every bank for 100 days until congress could come up with something. Then, he shifted gears to the people, what he did help shaped America’s economy and what became to be known as “The New Deal.” The new deal was a set of acts that helped America now and during the Great Depression. The New Deal included Agricultural Adjustment Act(AAA), which was to help farmers with providing them money to produce their productions, Public Works Administration(PWA), which was implied in the New deal to build roads and public buildings, another act was the Federal Deposit Insurance Company(FDIC), which made sure deposits were in the bank, and etc. Another deal that helped America was the Second New Deal which involved the social security system, which helped provide pensions to the elderly, helping to redefine mortgages, and it also established emergency relief to help the people in need. Midway in the 1930s the economy started to show some improvement and congress decided to raise taxes for the rich people, which was known as the “soak-the-rich” tax. As he was elected for his fourth term in 1940 he was again put to the test with the start of WW2 in 1939. Franklin Roosevelt's role during WW2 was to be the commander in chief of the military and that his role was more of a facilitator. And as president he was afraid that Adolf Hitler, Italy, or Japan could spread their powers to the rest of the World. So, what Roosevelt did to prevent that was, he called a meeting for congress and told congress to revise the neutrality acts so that, America could let its Allies,Russia, Britain and France, to buy American guns and turn America into a factory of where countries such as Russia, Great Britain, and France could buy guns. But Germany was so tough that they invaded France and captured the country. Which resulted in Roosevelt to react quickly and passed an act called the Lend-Lease Act, which is to lend guns to countries in war such as WW2. During WW2, Roosevelt also had the job of being a facilitator. For example he had job to draw up a plan on trying to invade and give countries back their land. He first started first in North Africa, then went on to Sicily, Italy, and then D-Day of Europe in 1944. As more people in America wanted to hear what congress was talking about in their meetings, FDR decided to give the meetings through the radio and T.V and a total of 30 speeches were given like this.
This became to be known as “fireside chats” because of the way FDR spoke straight to the public, which made the nation feel a part of the Congress. Nevertheless, the fireside chat helped FDR with the plan of the New Deal. During the Great Depression and WW2 Roosevelt had stepped up and had been a great leader to take America out of those big crisis. In, which rewarded Roosevelt to be elected for four terms and he deserved it because he took out America out of two troubling
