1) As the warden of an organization as complex as a prison, information of this nature would need to be dealt with as efficiently as possible. When negative information regarding employees is obtained, it will undoubtedly spread through formal and informal channels. Unfortunately however, as the information spreads, the likelihood of such information remaining unchanged and accurate will decrease drastically.
Communication in a prison setting is comprised of formal, as well as informal, communications. Formal communication, such as that established by hierarchy for which personnel must strictly adhere to, will pass information and directives to subordinates from the top down (Stojkovic et al., 2008). When this is done, there will ultimately be noise involved that will distort the original message. Unfortunately, when communication passes through complex channels, such is the case with a complicated hierarchy; there is more opportunity that message will be distorted when it is ultimately received by the officers involved. When this occurs the efficiency of the communication is greatly reduced (Stojkovic et al., 2008). In order to ensure however that the intended message from the warden reaches the appropriate channels, the warden would not only communicate his message verbally, but also in writing.
Informal communication, or grapevine, moves very quickly and encompasses numerous groups and individuals (Stojkovic et al., 2008). The message from the warden would pass down the chain of command to the intended officers. Subsequently, following the formal phase of training, the new employee is exposed to an informal phase of socialization. This would be equivalent to a Crime Scene Technician that has graduated from the more formal training, but is now exposed to field training. This informal phase is generally conducted by the employees peer (Stojkovic et al., 2008). The peer or manager that works with the new employee now exposes the employee to hands on elements of the profession. A key element in the informal phase that is unlike that of the formal phase, socialization is ongoing. The inmates will disrespect the officers by calling them names, giving officers difficult times, but it goes the other way around too. It is disturbing image after learning that sometimes it is the officer’s fault and not just the inmates’ wrongdoings. There will be times when officers and inmates will engage in a conspiracy crime and times when the female staff is engaged in sexual actions with an inmate. Conover wrote this book to allow the audience to see the prison society from many different point-of-views and give future officers an early insight to becoming a correctional officer.
The jobs of correctional officer are some times overlooked. Correctional officers are playing a huge role in society because they need to perform important tasks. A correctional officer’s job is not easy and can become very stressful at times. Correctional officers are required to enforce and keep order, supervise inmates, help counsel offenders, search inmate cells for contraband, and also report on inmate actions. Correctional officers need to contain power over the prisoners in order to enforce the rules of the prison, or else the prison will not function correctly. In the book, Conover says, “The essential relationship inside a prison is the one between a guard and an inmate…the guard, it is thought, wields all the power, but in truth the inmate has power too” (Conover, p. 207). In the book, the importance of power the prisoner’s hold can be seen through the sudden increase of prisoners, the Stanford Prison Experiment and through the contraband they make.
Understanding the organization of prisons and how the are can is a very complex mechanism. In “Stateville: The penitentiary in Mass Society”, Jacobs seeks to understand the organization in the Stateville prison system, one of the world’s toughest prisons. Giving the history of the prison does this and how things ran under different wardens, and how things were coupled throughout different organizations. When looking at these things Jacobs also points out issues in the prison and how they happened under what type of organization. By doing this, Stateville is easily relatable to understand leadership and authority.
The correctional subculture is not described as extensively as the police subculture; however, many elements of misconduct and criminal activities are similar (Pollock, 2014). There are two different kinds of influences on prison misconduct, there is the combined characteristics of the inmates themselves, and the combined characteristics of the staff in control of them (Camp, Gaes, Langan, Saylor (2003). Prison misconduct has been classified into significant fields related to drug use, violence, property offenses, prison accountability and escapes, security-related offenses, security offenses interfering with daily operations, along with a residual category (Camp, Gaes, Langan, Saylor (2003). The prison gangs that exist in the United States are a major concern for all those involved in the criminal justice system. From the humble beginnings in 1950 with the Gypsy Jokers Gang, to modern day entities like the Aryan Brotherhood, gangs have grown to numbers in the tens of thousands and are at times out of control (Orlando-Morningstar, 1997) Through the use of assault, bribery, intimidation, and murder, the gangs have become a powerful force inside and outside of prison. Law enforcement officers today have the tremendous task of arresting and maintaining discipline of these offenders once locked away in jail or prison. It is paramount that the correctional officers that are in charge of overseeing these criminals maintain the standards and are strong willed and trustworthy. The gangs inside have their own rules and laws that they abide by. The correctional officers must use the rules and laws that govern the system to keep peace and order, because with this chaos and anarchy will reign supreme.
At any given time, a single corrections officer, can expect to be outnumbered by upwards of 400 inmates (Conover, 2011). It can be chilling to work in the midst of hundreds of inmates, some of which initiate attacks and inappropriate relationships. However, other issues have impacted the psychological health and physical safety of the staff. Detrimental factors have included heavy workloads, the prisons physical structure, and a lack of support from both peers and superiors. Each workplace issue has been in addition to role problems, specifically role ambiguity and role conflict (Schaufeli & Peeters, 2011). It is believed that anyone of these undesirable facets of prison should be enough to deter the public from attempting to enter such positions, yet the essay attempts to connect the dysfunctional aspects, expanding on why these prison positions are associated with burnout and frustration. In final analysis, this research project looks to provide a new way of understanding the current prison situation and its various manifestations. A comprehensive report of how things might be for those closely involved in the punishment and rehabilitation process might enable policy-makers and the public alike to change their ideas and help them perceive what it might mean to be in the position of officers or prisoners. The higher objective of this project will be to bring, through new knowledge, the necessary reforms that could leave both the taxpayer and those in the prison system more satisfied.
