Forests are basically a complex mix of living things such as animals, trees, shrubs, plants, fungi, and many more, as they cover about 40% of Canada’s land. As forests play an important role in this complex community, as we need those to survive to build shelter, food for animals, and most important is fresh air. There are many different types of forests that include different types of trees such as coniferous, and deciduous, such as boreal forests, mixed forests, deciduous forests, grasslands, cordilleran vegetation, west coast forests, and many more. Coniferous trees are a type of tree that is also called a needle-leaved tree, which drops its needles during the fall; this special tree grows in a triangular shape, making it grow in an upward path. Thanks to their needles and their flexible branches, snow can easily rest on the trees without any damage. The needles can stay on the trees for years due to its waxy needles, and the thick bark can prevent the loss of moisture during the times of drought. Deciduous trees are basically the opposite of what a coniferous tree would be, just like when the coniferous tree grows in an upward path, deciduous trees grow in an outward path, letting the branches and the leaves hang far from the tree itself. Deciduous trees have flat leaves that need sunlight and water in order to survive. The leaves start falling during the seasons of fall, and all the leaves fall from the tree at the time of winter, when it’s cold, and not enough heat from the sun, but the leaves start growing again during the spring seasons, when it gets warmer and when there’s more precipitation. As trees are one of the most important things in our lives, people have different types of harvesting metho... ... middle of paper ... ...many ways in our economic ways, there are ways that these methods can affect the environment, in both good and bad ways, for even clear-cutting and selective methods of harvesting trees. Harvesting trees can have some major impacts on the environment, such as when loggers clear-cut, they can create deforestation and leave many animals and living organisms homeless and can suffer. Deforestation means fewer trees will absorb the carbon dioxide in the air, which can create more greenhouse gas in our atmosphere. Not only can clear-cutting can lead to deforestation, but can lead to soil erosion, as plants act as a barrier to slow down water as it runs off the land. The root fix the soil, and prevents it from washing away, the absence of vegetation causes the topsoil to erode more quickly, allowing difficulty for plants to grow in a less nutrition soil quality.
These are very difficult questions for me personally to answer because I live in the Pacific Northwest, and I have seen the beauty of the old growth forests first-hand.
The vegetation is mostly trees. There are many types of trees, Some of the trees are coniferous trees and deciduous. It is all scattered in the southern part of the Canadian Shield. The forests are all mixed with birch trees, aspen trees, tamarisk trees, black and white spruce trees, willow trees, hemlock trees, pine trees and balsam fir trees. The mixed forests are beautiful in the fall when the leaves of the deciduous trees change color.
The main reason deforestation happens, is because of farming. They need to clear out land in order to plant crops and vegetables. Another loss from deforestation is that many animals lose their habitat. The loss of animals habitats will lead to migration, or possibly even extinction. And when this happens this will ruin the food chains which will affect even more animals.
Typically people think that redwood forests are made up entirely of redwoods. But that isn't so--a healthy old-growth redwood forest is a mix of redwoods, deciduous trees, ferns, vines, flowers and wildlife. Giant redwoods are so tall, dense, and so crowded in the canopy, that some ground areas rarely see the sunlight, and little grows beneath these large giants. But whenever a tree does fall by Mother Nature or man, it leaves a gaping hole, that goes noticed.
Alina Bradford from Live Science, explained in her article about deforestation and how there are different causes of deforestation such as, selling trees for products such as paper, homes, house hold furniture, and other house products. She also states that other causes of deforestation are making room for agriculture purposes, and to create room for cattle ranching as well. On the downfall though there are disadvantages of deforestation as well too as she explains. One of them in fact is deforestation is contributing to climate change and also the greenhouse effect too as well by emitting a great amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) into the earth’s atmosphere. The effect from that happening is carbon dioxide is a greenhouse which absorbs heat from the sun and doesn’t let it escape into space. As that doing so, the Earth is heating up each year due to deforestation. From that, it will cause global warming and climate change too. There are causes and different purposes for deforestation but there are significant effects that could end up due to deforestation based on Alina Bradford’s
Environmental issues affect every life on this planet from the smallest parasite to the human race. There are many resources that humans and animal needs to survive; some of the most obvious resources come from the forests. Forests make up a large percentage of the globe. The forests have global implications not just on life but on the quality of it. Trees improve the quality of the air that species breath, determine rainfall and replenish the atmosphere. The wood from the forests are used everyday form many useful resources. Moreover, thinning the forests increases the amount of available light, nutrients and water for the remaining trees. Deforestation (forest thinning) is one of the most critical issues of environmental problems that are occurring today.
Forest biomes are the most complex ecologic systems in the world, and they cover 1/3 of the land on earth. There are three major types of forest biomes: tropical forests, temperate forests, and boreal forests. The average temperature in tropical forest is around 22° C the year; the temperature in temperate forests varies from -30° C to 30° C; the temperature in boreal forests is very low, there are long winters with average temperature below 0° C. Various trees, vegetation, insects, and mammals can be found in the forest biomes, hence it is easier to survive in tropical and temperate forest biomes.
General Information: First off, deforestation is the clearing of forests or areas with trees to be converted into something else after. There are a few different ways forests are cleared. Clear cutting is simply removing everything in sight. Patch cutting is the removal of trees in specified patches. Strip cutting is removing trees in selected strips. The most environmentally friendly method is known as selective cutting. This is the removal of only selected trees, leaving the others un-harmed. The technique used most during deforestation is the slash and burn technique. This uses the basic cutting method of clear cutting, but afterwards everything that remains is burned to ash.
Deforestation began with man’s ability to manipulate his environment. Wood has always been a primary source for shelter and has been affected by human expansion. As the worlds population grew, so to did the need for wood to make housing. As cities grew so did the demand for space to accommodate the growing population. Throughout history and even today, man has manipulated the environment affecting it’s resources.
Canada should not continue to log Canada’s forests because it is not sustainable. It cuts down every tree in a given area. This leaves not enough trees to regenerate themselves. On top of that, trees are not being planted after they are cut down, so the number of trees in Canada will decrease. The Earth was full of forests in the last century, and now 80% of forests have been cut down. This is a huge problem because trees provide a lot of oxygen, and if there are not a lot of trees, there won’t be enough oxygen produced. Since Canada’s population is increasing, there will be a need for more oxygen. If Canada continues to log forests the way that they are, there would not be enough oxygen. A solution to this would be to plant trees after they are cut down, to maintain the number of trees and forests
Canada has many different types of large forest covering its fertile soils, most of the country is the Boreal Forest, which spreads from the Northwest Territories down and over all the way to Newfoundland and Labrador. Other than the Boreal Forest their are the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Forest in southern Ontario, The Acadian Forest that covers most of our New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and PEI. There is the Carolinian Forest in the far southern tip of Ontario close to the border. We have the Subalpine Forest, Columbia Forest, Montane Forest, and Coastal Forest, all crammed over along the west coast of the country by the ocean. Our forest are very valuable to us as a county, because of our large forest we have a huge industry in forestry, and the
Trees have long been one of the most valuable renewable resources to man. “Logging has been linked with the folksy figure of Paul Bunyan , the mythical woodsman who carried an axe and was accompanied by his blue ox Babe. In reality, logging is a big, complex industry” (History Channel). Logging is important to the housing and furniture industries, even logs that sunk on their way to lumber mills 100 years ago are highly prized for the unique properties they gather during underwater ageing. ”The World Bank estimates that forest products are a $270-bi...
The raw material which is extracted from the trees is used in wood based industries,
Cutting the trees also reduces our oxygen supply. The beauty of the land is defaced with logging and should be stopped for environmental concerns.
Trees add beauty and much more trees in your backyard can be place for different types of wildlife they can improve your health standards provide oxygen they also keep your house cool planting medicinal plants improve your health fresh air improves your lungs purification add beauty and colour provide shelter from wind and add value to your home.
