Nothing Will Happen ‘til you Swing the Bat “Nothing amazing happens here. And you get used to that, used to a world where everything is ordinary,” are the first and last words said by the main character, Naota, in the series Fooly Cooly. However, Fooly Cooly, also known as FLCL for short, is anything but ordinary. An incredibly short anime series of only six episodes that ran from April 2000 to March 2001(Anime News Network). The series is technically an anime original video animation, or OVA, which basically means it was straight to the video market without first going through a theatrical release or television broadcast (Anime News Network). It can seem overwhelming the first time anyone watches it due to unrealistic physics and random scenes that do not make sense. However, anime is known for being unrealistic and I think that is one of its best qualities. You also need to understand that not all of the scenes in the show are important and have no meaning at all. Even the title of the anime, Fooly Cooly, has no meaning; the title is mostly just used as an innuendo. The series tell a coming of age story of Naota Nandaba who is a twelve-year-old boy living in the city of Mabase where “nothing amazing happens.” However just in the first episode he is run over by a Vespa, gets hit in the head with a guitar, grows a large horn in the middle of his forehead, and has two fighting robots erupt from his head. All of this madness begins when Haruko Haruhara runs Naota over with her Vespa, then becomes a maid at his house, and signals the beginning of a confusing puberty for young Naota. Once you get past the hyperactive, absurd, nonsense on the surface, you can tell that FLCL has deep symbolism and themes about adolescence, sexuality, and what maturity really
