As a change maker and full-time on-campus student, the issue I would address is food insecurity on campus. By that, I mean the affordability and accessibility to healthier venues at the food court. Many students are struggling with a lack of getting nutritional food at school. It is happening because healthy and nutrition food is too expensive to get. It is easier for a student to buy a cheap burger and soda on campus rather than get a healthy salad and juice. Between paying rent, paying utilities and then trying to buy food, that is where the most insecurity faced because food choice is the most flexible. Every year tuition is rising, but no challenge on the food-related issue on campus. Most of the students are recognizing this problem,

With so many issues facing our communities today, what issue would you like to see addressed by our group and how would you leverage your potential position as a member of the RBS community to develop a solution?
Two professors of different backgrounds, Mike Rose of California, and Gerald Graff, of Illinois, discuss the problems college students face today in America. Though similar in slight variations, both professors view the problem in different regards and prepare solutions that solve what they feel to be the heart of this academic problem.
In conclusion the moral of this story is simple- colleges should take more responsibility and initiative when it comes to the food choices and the health of their students. The college needs to offer better food choices in their dining areas. The hours of operation should be between normal eating hours so the option to eat at an unusual or indecent hour is obsolete, and proportions should be strictly regulated and enforced. While most would argue that it is the students fault for gaining weight, I believe the facts presented are obvious in pointing you in the other direction. The school has all of the power and needs to address this issue accordingly before the epidemic becomes bigger than what we can handle.
There are several programs in the Muncie area that assist those who are dealing with food insecurity. Some of these programs are: Indiana school breakfast and lunch program, Second Harvest Food bank and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance program. These three programs help those who suffer from food insecurity but do so in different ways.
British Columbia (BC) is a wealthy province that provides a variety of publicly funded services to its residents, however, from 2011 to 2012 almost 1.1 million British Columbians and 4.9 percent of Canadian children were affected by food insecurity (Rideout & Kotasky, 2014, Statistics Canada, 2015). Food insecurity goes beyond not having enough to eat but also has an impact on health equity and social justice. “Children experiencing food insecurity have poorer school performance, and having not learned healthy eating habits in childhood; they face additional challenges of healthy living as adults” (Rideout & Kotasky, 2014).
Food insecurity is a concerning issue that need to be addressed in our current society. In population such as the elderly it is alerting issue. For instance, many older adults lack access, have chronic health conditions and limited support when obtaining food. As result older adults experience nutritional complication such as malnourishment and sometimes death. To reduce the complications associated with food insecurity in the elderly population interventions are needed. This paper will highlight several interventions that addressed the issue of food insecurity among the elderly population. The United States Department of Agriculture defines food unsecurity as the availability of nutritionally adequate and safe food, or the ability to acquire such food, is limited or uncertain for a household. Food insecurity also does not always mean that the household has nothing to eat. More simply stated it is the struggle to provide nutritional food for ones family and/or self. The people that suffer from food insecurity are not all living below the poverty line. In 2012 49.0 million people were considered food insecure in the United States of those 46.5 million were in poverty (Hunger & Poverty Statistics, 2012). For some individual’s food insecurity is only a temporary situation for others it maybe for extended period. Food insecurity due temporary situation such as unemployment, divorce, major medical or illness can be become more long term. The vast majority of these are families with children.
The American Education system needs to check their purpose and refocus students back on the reason for furthering their education. Although, many colleges are known for many amenities and student activities, college students need to focus on the issues at hand and conquer them with knowledge and compassion for humankind. Americans need to realize that student debt is a national crisis, and the best way to make a change is be involved and responsible for every cost during your education career. As a part of the legislative committee of the Student Government Association, I have the opportunity to review and develop legislative that can improve the university for students and the administration alike. In addition, being a part of the social media team has also allowed me to observe situations and contemplate solutions from the university's perspective. Finally, being a member of the Black Student Association reinforces my belief of the importance of dialogue and striving for more diversity and equality in various institutions. Issues that surround food security such as climate change and food sovereignty are debatably wicked problems. A wicked problem refers to a complex, persistent or reoccurring and hard to resolve issue due to its links to broader social, economic and policy issues, (Ahmed S. Khana. 2010) characterised by their lack of definitive solution, uniqueness and complex attachment to other wicked problems. When most people think of changes that have occurred over a period of fifteen years, they think of changes for the better. Unfortunately, in some situations the circumstances are different. I have attended Bayou Academy for fifteen years. As I look back on my years here, I notice the changes our school has undergone. When I was in elementary school, petty rules were not a big ordeal. As I near the end of my senior year, petty rules are the only thing that is talked about at Bayou. The school has decided to make major changes within the cafeteria, textbooks, and our everyday classroom rules. The decisions that have been made affect students throughout their every day lives and hinder them from having a pleasurable experience at school.
In the year 2015, around 40 million U.S. citizens were food insecure (Randall para. 3). Food insecurity can be defined in paragraph 3 by “[having] difficulty at some time during the year providing enough food for all their members due to a lack of resources. This 12.7% of American citizens also contains another group - children. Aged 10-17, 6.8 million adolescents struggle with a food insecurity. There have been several years of cuts to the social programs designed to help these people, along with the Great Recession continuing to leave an impact on the U.S. economy (para. 6). Under the Obama administration, $8.6 billion was cut from the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as Food Stamps. From 1993-2001 under the Clinton administration, former President Bill Clinton’s administration “gutted the welfare system” (para. 15). Because of these budget cuts, the families who rely on food assistance from the government have been allotted less throughout the years. From a sociological perspective, the concepts of sociological imagination, class stratification, and social location are in effect when it comes to child hunger in the United States. Being hungry is an issue larger than any one individual can control.

Food insecurity and poor nutrition is an alarmingly large problem for low income families, especially in developing countries. Many strategies exist to fight this problem, although not many of these address all the factors contributing to it along with all the possible solutions to solve it. In many cases, multiple strategies must correlate and work together so that all the determinants of this issue are addressed and can fight food insecurity from different angles. This essay will discuss the significance of the problem, a range of possible strategies to solve the problem, and go into detail on a select few that will correlate and work together to solve different factors of food insecurity and poor nutrition.
Eating habits are a prime indicator for identifying nutritional and health status. This studyexamines the University of Guam (UOG) undergraduate students eating habits. According to Kurubaran et.al, he describes college students as “…nutritionally vulnerable groups…[because of the] Rapid changes in [their] physical growth and psychosocial development…”(1). For freshman and sophomore college students, they will be categorized in this study as adolescents. Thomas et.al, from World Health Organization (WHO) explains that “Adolescents [aged 10-19] are usually open to new ideas; they show curiosity and interest…[therefore]…with increasing age, adolescents’ personal choices and preferences gain priority over [their] eating habits acquired in the family, and they have progressively more control over what they eat, when, and where” (“Nutrition”). This means that during our early childhood years, our parents and/or guardians would normally cook meals for us. Therefore, they were able to regulate and be held responsible for our eating behaviors. However, now that we are significantly older and attending the university, many college students for the first time is able to make his/her own dietary choices. This studyexplores and determines which variables: parental households, prevalence of fast foods, media, or their peers affect and influence the most with UOG students’ nutritional choice. At the same time assesses whether UOG undergraduate students are eating healthy or unhealthy food.
