A problem dealing with human resources is occurring at Food Chain Supermarket. Walter Jackson a black employee who had complained that black employees were being passed over for promotions in favor of white employees who had less experience in the work field related to the job confronted Thomas L. Rutherford the human resource director for Food Chain Supermarket. Rutherford began to investigate the claims Walter Jackson had. The company did not want to deal discriminatory lawsuit. They were several times were well-qualified black employees were not even consider for a promotion. For example Clifford Gemson had plenty of experience managing stores he manage three store before coming here, he ask his district manager and store manager about the promotion, but he was never consider for the promotion. Two white employees with no experience filled the two positions. This situation is an example of improper management from the human resource department, because they are basically allowing the managers to decide who gets the promotion regardless of experience and seniority. Rutherford excuse is that he’s only been in the job for four months, but he should have been aware of this situation. Target Corp. is that the EEOC alleged that Target violated the Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 by engaging in race discrimination against African-American applicants who were interested in management positions. In today’s world, the American still has barriers to overcome in the matter of racial equality. Whether it is being passed over for a promotion at the job or being underpaid, some people have to deal with unfair practice that would prevent someone of color or the opposite sex from having equal opportunity at the job. In 2004, Dukes vs. Wal-Mart Stores Incorporation was a civil rights class-action suite that ruled in favor of the women who worked and did not received promotions, pay and certain job assignments. This proves that some corporations ignore the 1964 Civil Rights Act, which protects workers from discrimination based on sex, race, religion or national origin.
This chapter focuses on the experiences that are expressed through these story lines such as “I did not get a (job or promotion) because of a black man.” The way dominant group shares their racial stories can be broken down into two categories ' story line and testimonies. Whites would freely express themselves providing, with evidence to reinforce their point of view. When they 're asked about subjects such as affirmative action or reparations, the respondents’ would usually insert these lines “the past is the past" or “I did not own slave,” to solidify their opposing view on the topic. Blacks are prevented from enjoying life in the American work force because of their race. The problem is that Whites cause Black misery, but do nothing to change this. Jill Nelson’s White supervisors could have been more accommodating to Nelson’s needs. They could have taken measures to make her more comfortable in the work place, possible by hiring more Blacks. Their newspaper could have began to portray Blacks in a more positive, truthful light.
In today’s workplace, African Americans continue to be subjected to overt discrimination. This can take the form of ethnic jokes, racial slurs and exclusionary behaviors by Euro-American co-workers and managers. Even more disturbing is the verbal abuse, calculated mistreatment and even physical threats experienced by some African Americans while on the job. African Americans have also faced overt acts such as being reassigned to lower level projects, not receiving a promotion even though they were equally qualified and receiving less wages than other employees, even less qualified new hires. The discrimination can be so pervasive that African Americans feel uneasy and threatened, demotivated and disrespected, eventually feeling forced to leave to search for other employment.

The food service sector has at least 125,951 companies and approximately 12 million employees with almost 7 million foreigners. This sector includes individually owned restaurants, mid-priced chains, quick service (fast food), hotels, and beverage establishments. Food service plays a major role in institutional establishments like schools, hospitals, prisons and meals on wheels. They cater to the tastes of their particular customers and are often leaders of food innovation. In the food service, we find: bartenders, wait staff, hosts, busboys, chefs, cooks, managers, and dishwashers .The food service workers perform a variety of customer service, food preparation and cleaning tasks, all that which are very important to keep a business running. More concerning , some of the major working conditions that foodservice workers face with daily is no health benefits and significantly low wages. These employees working in the food industry make it possible for millions of people to enjoy food in restaurants but are not being treated or appreciated fairly.
