In today’s world, the American still has barriers to overcome in the matter of racial equality. Whether it is being passed over for a promotion at the job or being underpaid, some people have to deal with unfair practice that would prevent someone of color or the opposite sex from having equal opportunity at the job. In 2004, Dukes vs. Wal-Mart Stores Incorporation was a civil rights class-action suite that ruled in favor of the women who worked and did not received promotions, pay and certain job assignments. This proves that some corporations ignore the 1964 Civil Rights Act, which protects workers from discrimination based on sex, race, religion or national origin. In the past, it is true that African American have suffered injustice, however, today there are still some wounds that needs healing from harsh treatment blacks people experience from whites people back during the civil right movement. Now, some whites are in positions where they are able to use their authority and demand unnecessary respect from minorities in certain situations, just so they could be in control. “In any case, white people, who had robbed black people of their liberty and who profited by this theft every hour that they lived, had no moral ground on which to stand” (Baldwin, 2000, p31). For instance, threatening to fire or suspend someone for not allowing them to be in control is the same attitude people had back then. Because of this, some blacks feel that they need to respond in any way possible to make their point. In other words, the attitude that some blacks have express at some point could be aggressive at time. Now that we have a black president, some people tend to believe that we can now move forward and forget about the past. Yes, we made ... ... middle of paper ... ...that the rich has to be rich and poor has to always be poor. Many have this notion that there is not enough room for advancement for minorities. Until racism is totally eliminated in this country we will continue to have inequality in America. Reference Baldwin, J. (2000). Down at the Cross. In Brunk, T., Diamond, S., Perkins, P., & Smith, K. In chapter one of Dusk of Dawn, “The Plot,” is a socio-historical perspective on how the concept of race has evolved. The concept of race has evolved from biological difference in skin pigmentation, to biological superiority and inferiority, and then
There is a high degree of social inequality within the United States. Of most modern industrial countries, the United Stated has some of the richest and some of the poorest people to be found. That fact is very disturbing, however, explains why much of the inequality exists in the US. In the following essay I will explain to you about the inequality in our country and why it occurs, based on the theoretical perspectives of a functionalist, conflict theorist, and social interationist.

Prior to World War I there was much social, economic, and political inequality for African Americans. This made it difficult for African Americans to accept their own ethnicity and integrate with the rest of American society. By the end of World War II however African Americans had made great strides towards reaching complete equality, developing their culture, securing basic rights, and incorporating into American society.
Throughout the past one hundred and fifty years, race relations have progressed markedly, emanating from the demise of legalized slavery and segregation in America. African Americans today have many rights that their ancestors were denied, such as the right to vote, being paid for their work, and being allowed to use the same restrooms and drinking fountains as white people. However, despite the many strides we have taken toward racial inequality as a country, there are still many ways in which African Americans and other minorities are unfairly treated today. For all the civil rights breakthroughs of the past several decades, racial adversity still materializes through numerous and often times far more insidious methods. It pervades in nearly
discrimination, while others believe that it has yet to do enough to “level the playing field”
The income gap in the United States is the distribution of wealth between the higher class and the lower class. According to Inequality.org, the issue at hand is that the higher class makes up about 10% of the population and holds approximately 75% of the wealth, so the rest of the population, 90%, only holds 25%. The issue with this is that the minority of the population has more money then they even know what to do with while the majority is barely getting by on the salary they are making. Closing this gap can be partially solved by raising the minimum wage. By doing so, the average American making minimum wage will now be earning more money and can help boost the economy and also distribute the wealth more equally. Although some people
In the United States during the mid-1960’s a revolutionary act was passed to enable millions of American citizens some protection in society and the workplace. “This law [made] it illegal to discriminate against someone on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, or sex.” (EEOC, 1964) Although these differences might have seemed self-evidently unimportant to many it was clear that these differences were being used to make those inherently equal—inherently treated very differently. The changes this litigation changed the lives of very many people
To reduce social inequality based on color in America today, the society, as a whole would need to reevaluate how the social class, economy, and system is looked upon as a whole. However, I don’t think any certain one “value” or solution will reduce social inequality together. I believe there is many causes of prejudice that reflects in social inequality. That being said, each cause should be devoted its own variety of solution. Thankfully the United States have come a long way in the history of racism and social inequality. Segregation on a legal front is now non-existent. The concept of the level of racism in the 1960s as drastically diminished. Minority groups and individuals now hold positions, occupations, and standards of living in sections
According to Douglas Massey, America is so exceptional because "The United States is exceptional among developed nations for the amount of inequality it tolerates. As always, America's heritage of racism render it unique among developed nations and quite exceptional in how it has responded to the inequality-producing pressures pressures that inevitably arise from globalization". Two factors that I believe contributes to inequality is deunionization and the minimum wage. The minimum wage during the 1900s were decreasing instead of increasing. It effected many people because people that were once in the middle class got pushed down to the poverty line. In the article, it mentions "A more comprehensive and well-controlled analysis by Bartels
A new racial structure has emerged In the 1960s even though research found a reduction in racial inequality in America. Blunt racists make sure blacks remain in the subordinate position at the economic and social level. Research in the 1980s found blacks mostly worked in agricultural or service jobs. Blacks entered working class occupations after WWI. Blacks earned less income than whites because they usually worked low skill jobs nobody else wanted. Recent research found that an employment gap between blacks and whites during the 1970s and 1980s. Whites get seven more hours than whites and get more jobs when compared to blacks. Tests and high school diploma requirements screen some blacks out from high level jobs. Education attainment do not
Society, a collection of people banded together to over come barriers that threaten the optimization of life for all mankind. In essence, we as humans continue to evolve and as we do so, the problems faced by the past generation manifest into new dilemmas that eventually become the defining factors for that particular time period. In the preceding generations of Americans, the problems have all, in one way or another, dealt with the issues of equality. As society has progressed, we have managed to eliminate most problems of racial, and social injustice but now, those same issues have managed to reenter our lives in varying ways. The issue of controversy, among other things, for this country is economic inequity. The cost of living continues to rise, while wages and job opportunities remain relatively stagnant.
America is supposed to be a safe haven for numerous races, cultures, and classes; but rather than celebrate these differences, there is a large number of people that discriminate and judge. On the other hand, there is an even larger number of people that appreciate others for who they are. But just because there will always be hateful people, America will never achieve true racial and social equality.
“Equality for all” has always been dramatized as a stand point for America expressing freedom and equality for everyone no matter what. In reality the three letter term stands for nothing but a lie among its repitition spoken out of a neglected person’s mouth and the issue of the wealth gap portrays that lie beautifully. The wealth gap shows the reality of inequality by underlying the unequal distribution of wealth. To understand the role of the wealth gap it’s essential to consider the causes, why it’s a problem and its solutions.
Perhaps one of the main globally covered epidemics that provide high sympathetic rating among the public is third world citizens struggling with extreme hunger. Many news outlets take advantage of this very real epidemic to showcase social inequality factors because of capitalism. Robbins, mentions in chapter six, the effects that labor has on food production. He states that, "…people are more vulnerable to hunger if opportunities for employment decrease, if wages fall, or if food prices rise…" (Robbins 2015:176). The labor and food production correlation is a micro level issue that can affect anyone in borderline economics-from the lower class citizen who lives pay check to pay check or the middle class citizen
