I just graduated Culinary Skills at Durham College and in the fall I will be studying Culinary Management at George Brown. I have work at a food bank where I would unload the trucks and stock and organize the shelves. I would cut and package fresh bread and bagged food for distribution. At Durham College I volunteered for many special dinner events at Bistro ‘67 to gain knowledge and skills. Many of the events were hosted by Chef Jamie Kennedy; he has taught me a lot. I help prep the meals and I help plate and garnish meals. This has helped me learn how important it is to be able to work as a team and individually. I currently have the first aid and CPR-C and Safe Food Handler Certificate. I was employed with Humber college and work as a housekeeper and Sustainability Ambassador. I help run The Circle which is a support group where we also do peer to peer sessions. I do research and help plan events and host weekly discussions topics and a variety of issues. Also I have planned events and help hosted events to the public through the Green Collar Corps. I have also worked office jobs with them while I did general office duties such as creating, organizing and filing papers. The Guelph Food Bank, is an essential organization in Guelph. The purpose of the food bank is to provide food to the less fortunate. With an unpredictable economy, many people are living paycheque to paycheque, trying to survive on little income. Due to the high costs of rent, not all people are able to purchase groceries and rely on the food bank to provide them with the essentials. The Guelph food bank also serves people who are unemployed as well as people who are living with illnesses. Welfare cheques simply do not provide enough to cover all the expenses that an average person has to deal with. Therefore, the Guelph foodbank’s mission is to not only provide food to the unemployed but to also help people who do not have enough money to purchase food. It not only wants to help people short term, but its goal to help people in the long term by helping them become independent of organizations.
My name is Monica Pope; I am 20 years old and I am a sophomore at Texas State University and I am apart of the SNAP program otherwise known as Food Stamps. According to the USDA “SNAP offers nutrition assistance to millions of eligible, low income individuals and families and provides benefits to communities” (2015). I get a set amount of money for food every month. Right now, I receive $200 every month and I have to make the food that I buy last me the entire month. I have truly learned that I only get what need for that month and nothing more. (Question 1)
Food stamps came about during the era of the Great Depression where the government would issue a voucher for people with low income to trade in the voucher for food. Food stamps do have regulations such as how much food a person can obtain based on how many people are in the household. These regulations help the government decide who needs assistance and how much they can obtain each month. Food stamps are specifically designed for food and nothing else such as paper products, medicines, or alcoholic beverages. From being apart of the NHS Foundation Trust and raising awareness for the department of health is what I currently promote. It was the summer of 2013 when I was living with my grandparents and they told me about volunteering at the church. I didn’t know what they were talking about, so I took the initiative to go find out for myself that following Sunday. I was in the balcony on Sunday, when I heard the announcements saying we can volunteer for their hope food pantry. I was excited because it was going to be a chance where I can help other and get community service hours. Volunteering I began to think positive thoughts and telling myself “ I am doing a good deed”.
From a young age, I knew that I wanted a career in the medical field. The thought of potentially saving a life and helping other people made healthcare very appealing to me. I was exposed to first aid techniques early on by my father, and it became a large part of my life as I went on to complete several first aid courses and eventually become a lifeguard. My current job as a lifeguard is something that I enjoy wholeheartedly. There is a huge amount of responsibility that comes with keeping patrons safe and that is not an aspect of all part-time jobs. One particular experience allowed me to realize that helping others is what I am meant to do and showed me how rewarding it really is.
I started volunteering at the food bank and the soup kitchen in grade 9, with a nudge from my friend. During my time as a volunteer, I would ask for donations and collect any non-perishable food items. Later I would go to the Soup Kitchen, to help cook some of these items and serve them to those in need. In the United States, the welfare program consists of many different parts that help the underprivileged. Food stamps are a central part of welfare because of their popularity among many Americans and the fact they are beneficial to many citizens. However, the misuse and abuse of food stamps also make them the most controversial part of welfare.
Another service that I have done has been to volunteer at the West Campus Hospital gift shop. It was a great experience for me; if I had the time I would make the effort to volunteer again. For people that is good at socializing with others and love organizing I would recommend volunteering at the gift shop.

I interned a cardiologist where I got to see the life of a physician as he went about his daily routine. I achieved getting my Certified Nursing Assistant license after assisting patients at a nursing home. I became a camp counselor for the Muscular Dystrophy Association, where I took care of a 10-year-old child during a summer camp. Through these experiences, I gained confidence in my character and purposefulness. Furthermore, I went on a mission trip to Kenya where I experienced life in a third world country. It was here where my eyes were opened to see a world that is in dire need of help. These people are malnourished, living in detrimental conditions without accessible health care. The experiences I had in Kenya reminded me to never take anything for granted. My engagement acting on all these opportunities fueled my perseverance to pursue my career in health

I worked for about six months at a recycling cooperative. The job of the cooperative was to educate the public on recycling, market the recyclables, and look for ways to bring recycling firms into the communities. This was a very successful project. Several abandoned business buildings were utilized to collect the recyclables.
I also had the privilege of helping with the Meals on Wheels non profit organization. My grandfather used to be a Meals on Wheels recipient and he would share with me how he enjoyed looking forward to their company and a hot meal daily. I volunteered because I wanted to give back and help someone else’s loved one in the same way. It was very rewarding delivering hot meals to people who didn’t have the means of getting one as well as being there for them to talk to. Overall, it was a very humbling experience, it made me realize just how blessed I am and how much I take for granted daily.
