October 18, 2016 Food Stamps Everyday thousands of people use food stamps to buy themselves a meal. Plenty of thing can prevent these people from being able to provide for themselves. There is a program that is made to help people in this situation, and it is called the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). SNAP is a federally funded program that helps thousands of people maintain a healthy diet, without this program, many of these people would be without food. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program is a helpful program, that keeps millions of people from starving, however, people tend to overlook that detail because of how much the United States spends on this program every …show more content…

Contrary to popular belief, most people who use food stamps usually have jobs, but the jobs just do not pay enough. People who do not have the money to buy food apply to this program. Though anyone can sign up for this program, in order to receive the benefits, the eligibility requirements have to be meet. According to the United States Department of Agriculture Food and Service website, “to get SNAP benefits, households must meet certain tests, including resource and income tests, deductions, employment requirements, special rules for elderly or disabled, and immigrant eligibility” (2016). After going through all of these requirements, if someone meets them they will soon be able to receive food stamps. These requirements help keep the people who do not need this program, from getting the stuff they could just go and buy, for free. They attempt to keep the program for just those who actually need it. On the Whitehouse website it claims that SNAP, “has lifted has lifted at least 4.7 million people out of poverty in 2014” (2015). This just shows that the program does more good than it does
