Focused Clinical Research Questions
Discovering new information applicable to the field of nursing begins by asking a focused clinical research question. According to Stone (2002), asking the appropriate question is essential for the research process that follows. Although there are countless nursing problems that are worth investigating, it is imperative to narrow the focus of the problems so they can be empirically tested (Adams, 2012). Personal clinical experience, professional literature, previous research, and current nursing theories are a few examples of sources where research questions can be identified (Adams, 2012). The purpose of this paper is to explain the connection between research and evidence-based practice, discuss how focused clinical questions are developed, and identify the key components of the PICO model as it relates to a research article.

Research and Evidence-Based Practice
Research is a systematic process that ultimately leads to the development of new knowledge and solutions to problems or questions (Adams, 2012). Evidence-based practice is the use of the best scientific evidence available to support clinical decisions when caring for individuals or groups of patients (Santos, Pimenta, & Nobre, 2007). The connection between research and evidence-based practice is derived from the fact that nurses use solutions found in research to validate and refine existing nursing knowledge. As a result, nursing practice is impacted. (Adams, 2012). On a broad scope, keeping up with the latest evidence-based practice in healthcare can be a difficult task for nurses. The amount of evidence-based information available can be overwhelming. When you compound that with the challenge of finding the latest information on a smaller scope in a specialized area of the medical field it can be even more daunting. One tool that nurses can use to make that search easier is to formulate a clinical question in the PICOT format. A PICOT question is designed to make searching for that information easier by gathering feedback from others. This paper will define what a PICOT question is, identify a need for change in my current work environment and formulate a PICOT question to help me gather evidence to help facilitate that change.

The aim of EBP is to aid practitioners to structure care of patients with the best and most current evidence. The most useful tools to assist in forming a focused clinical question is the PICO model. This tool can be used to construct searchable questions as the initial step in using research data to guide decision-making. The tool lists search terms to look at the connection around an issue and intercessions to address the issue. Pico is a critical mnemonic that is used to form the vital parts of a well-built, clinical question.

Evidence-based practice is important to consider when researching for interventions, further knowledge, or help to guide a new idea in the health professions. Evidence-based practice is comprised of three significant concepts: respect and awareness for the targeted population’s values, previous clinical practice or experience with that population, and systematic research to establish a better understanding of what is already known about the study’s focus. These concepts are all taken into consideration when designing and conducting a study because it provides a more valid and credible source for others.
