Sink or Float
Introduction:
I am doing this experiment to find the density of aluminum foil to see if it floats or sinks when placed in water. I hope to find how the density of aluminum foil changes when weight is added to the foil. I hypothesize that the boat will hold 20 pennies before sinking.
You will need to get:
Aluminum foil
Pennies
Water
And a big container or tub for your boat to float in…
Procedure:
1. You will need to cut one square foot of aluminum foil.
2. Crumple it up into a solid ball and drop it into the water.
3. Did the foil float or sink? Yes.
4. Get another piece of one square foot of aluminum foil.
5. Construct a boat from the foil.
6. Place it on the water. Does it float now? Yes.

The unknown bacterium that was handed out by the professor labeled “E19” was an irregular and raised shaped bacteria with a smooth texture and it had a white creamy color. The slant growth pattern was filiform and there was a turbid growth in the broth. After all the tests were complete and the results were compared the unknown bacterium was defined as Shigella sonnei. The results that narrowed it down the most were the gram stain, the lactose fermentation test, the citrate utilization test and the indole test. The results for each of the tests performed are listed in Table 1.1 below.
In the end, this experiment should have taught you how the different shapes of boat hulls effect how well your boat will be stable out on the water. The results from the experiment also have shown you that certain boat hull styles can support more weight than others. Another important finding was how weight distribution was a major factor because it can mean the difference between keeping your boat afloat or tipping over and capsizing. Now you know how a boat’s hull style affects how it floats.
The purpose of the study is to identify an unknown microorganism using multiple microbiology lab techniques. Through this process I will gain knowledge on how to perform these techniques as well as the importance of these tests on identifying unknown microorganisms. This is significant as the goal of this course is to familiarize ourselves with the common microbiology tests as well as the microorganisms we encounter in our daily activities.
The experiment required our group to find out the mass and thickness of a single penny from a group of pennies, with each group of pennies’ being from different years. Tools such as calipers and eight scales were used to find the average mass and thickness of a single penny from each year. Our general hypotheses before conducting the experiment was that both the mass and the thickness of pennies would go down with each newer year of pennies.
The experiment is aimed at giving a better understatement of osmosis process and the different conditions in which osmosis occurs.
