Objective Statement
The experiment required our group to find out the mass and thickness of a single penny from a group of pennies, with each group of pennies’ being from different years. Tools such as calipers and eight scales were used to find the average mass and thickness of a single penny from each year. Our general hypotheses before conducting the experiment was that both the mass and the thickness of pennies would go down with each newer year of pennies.
Observation/Data
We observed that some penny from the same year didn’t always have the same mass, so therefore we took the liberty of weighing about 3 to 4 pennies individually from the group of pennies that we had and estimated the uncertainties base on how much they were off from
the average when we weighted them all together. Concluding Remarks Our Hypotheses was that the penny’s mass and thickness would decrease as they got newer. Our finding and data support our first hypothesis that the mass of a single penny decreased with each year. As for our second hypothesis the finding’s and data supported it with a few penny years being outliers. For example, base on another groups work the thickness of the 1975 pennies were larger than most of the newer and older pennies. Our group also theorized that a major error was that older pennies may weigh more since they have probably accumulated properties from their years of circulation, such as gunk(I don’t know the scientific term) from the multiple times the pennies has exchanged hands.
I started by weighing 4 bags on each side of the scale to see which side was lighter. Then from those results I thought to weigh the 4 bags that were on the lighter side by 2 and 2. After this you would find one side weighing less than another. Then you would take those results and weigh the 2 remaining bags and the lightest bag would be the bag that was taken from. However, the mathematician said it could be done in less than three steps. So throwing the answer I had just gotten to the side, I started new. This time I started with 3 bags on each side knowing that if two sides were equal than the bag with the missing gold would be one of the bags not weighed the first time. Then you would have to weigh the two remaining bags and whichever one was lighter than the other would be the bag with less gold. But, if the 3 bags from the beginning weighed different then you would weigh 2 bags of the 3 and if they are equal in weight than the 3rd bag is the one with less coins. If they weigh different the lighter bag would be the one with less coins.
The unknown bacterium that was handed out by the professor labeled “E19” was an irregular and raised shaped bacteria with a smooth texture and it had a white creamy color. The pre 1982 pennies were made out of copper which has a density of 8.6 g/mL and the post 1982 pennies are made out of zinc which has a density of 7.14 g/mL.
