It’s now more certain to you more than ever that while your mindset is created for you, you’re largely responsible for developing into what you want it to be.
In one of her inaugural speeches, Debbie Millman states: “If you imagine less, less is what you undoubtedly deserve. Do you have love, and don’t stop until you get what you love. Work as hard as you can. Imagine immensities.” The words of Millman are a summary of what has been taught in psychology about how our ability and potentials affect our conduct and dictate how successful our lives will be.
Carol Dweck can’t be wrong in this area. She had been quoted again and again in many works that deal with the matter. Much of she said about mindset has been put to acid the test and passed.

They’re also passing the test of time. After decades of research and observation of children and adults, she came to the conclusion that intelligence and personality can be cultivated and developed. And that they’re not unchangeably engrained. She coined the terms, fixed mindset and growth mindset.
Fixed Mindset Explained
If you believe that the qualities you have were carved in a stone, you have a fixed mindset. You’ll conclude that your level of intelligence is limited, that your personality is fixed, and that your moral character can’t become stronger. People with a fixed mindset will not embark on developing their intelligence or talents. They’ll only be documenting them, thinking that those qualities are fixed. Their belief is that talent alone will give them success without working on those talents.
They think that nothing can increase the amount of talent or the level of intelligence that they have. So if they’re highly intelligent or highly talented, they think they’re set. If they lack in any of this, they take it as it is and just start to worry. They simply whine about their inadequacies or boast about their accomplishment without aspiring to the next level.
They always have the need to prove something to themselves and other people. They get consumed with proving their worth anywhere they find themselves in life. In the classroom, they’ve got something to prove. In their career, they want to confirm that they’re truly intelligent. In their relationship, they need to prove their superior personality or character. You’ll believe that most talents and intelligence are just the starting point and that a deficiency in any of this doesn’t limit your achievement in life.
A growth mindset will create in you a love for learning and perseverance through. You will believe that these are the requirement to achieve great things in life. Someone with a growth mindset will see that those who attain greatness in this life aren’t the naturally intelligent and they’re not the most brilliant people, but they’re people who love learning and who are resilient. You’ll be happy if you’re talented, but you won’t give up if you’re not because you have the belief that you can cultivate it.
If you have a growth mindset, you’ll love learning instead or craving for approval. You’ll be convinced that all those qualities like creativity, intelligence, conversational abilities, relationship management, and friendliness, can be cultivated by means of a concerted effort and constant practice. If you didn’t get it right, you won’t count it as a failure. Instead of getting discouraged, you’ll see your misses as a part of learning rather than a
failure. According to Dweck, with your growth mindset, you won’t waste your time to prove how great you’re to anybody. You’ll know there’s no limit to the room for improvement. You won’t waste the effort and time you should have spent on improving yourself where you’re proving a pointless point of greatness. You would face your deficiencies and work to overcome them rather than egotistically hiding them.
“There is no elevator to success, you have to take the stairs,” was said by motivational speaker and American author Zig Ziglar. This relates to Carol S. Dweck’s article “Brainology” and Sherman Alexie’s essay “Superman and Me.” Ziglar, Dweck, and Alexie all feel that it isn’t easy for someone to become successful. It takes hard work, perseverance, and the want to learn and grow. In Dweck’s article, she stated that someone with a growth mindset would become more successful and knowledgeable than someone with a fixed mindset, which was demonstrated by Alexie in his essay, and by a personal experience of my own.

I couldn’t concentrate on things for no more than 5 minutes at a time I would either get discouraged or find it too easy and just give up. According to what I learned from the class, a growth mindset is a kind of way of thinking that believes these difficulties and hardships in life are just another chances for us to develop ourselves. Growth and Fixed Mindset is one of the most basic beliefs we have about ourselves. It has to do with how we view and live with what we consider to be our personality. A “fixed mindset” assumes that our character, intelligence, and our creative ability are lacks movement which we can’t change in any way. Success in their minds is an affirmation of that intelligence. Wanting success but avoiding failure becomes a way of maintaining the sense of being smart or skilled. People with a fixed mindset are usually not motivated to do challenging work, apply very little effort, lose confidence after mistakes, and are intimidated when things get difficult. And I have experienced some of these situations. I get less motivated when I have more work, don’t try my best, and I put myself down after low grades. I lost confidence in myself after every setback, but I should of been looking to learn from them. I should actually look back and see what I could have done differently after a setback instead of degrading my own morale. For example, I could change the way I approach a test if I really messed up on the last one, or I can stay motivated at every task at hand.
