Using the fixed and growth mindset practice tool at work, I discovered I had a fixed mindset in 2016. I was taken back by the results because I was positive I had more of a growth mindset. As I reflected on the scores, I became painfully aware of the damaging effects of this mindset. I had missed so many opportunities in my personal life because I avoid anything that would challenge my abilities or skill set. Dismissed others opinions, because they did not align with my beliefs. Having a fixed mindset was derailing my personal growth, and I needed to make a change. I can recall dropping a Project Management Certification class in 2013. I lacked confidence in my ability to process new and complex information. Not wanting to appear uneducated,
“There is no elevator to success, you have to take the stairs,” was said by motivational speaker and American author Zig Ziglar. This relates to Carol S. Dweck’s article “Brainology” and Sherman Alexie’s essay “Superman and Me.” Ziglar, Dweck, and Alexie all feel that it isn’t easy for someone to become successful. It takes hard work, perseverance, and the want to learn and grow. In Dweck’s article, she stated that someone with a growth mindset would become more successful and knowledgeable than someone with a fixed mindset, which was demonstrated by Alexie in his essay, and by a personal experience of my own.
Dweck says, “In a Growth mindset, however you can make a plan of positive action that
What does it mean to be a fixed mindset versus a growth mindset? In the book Mindset – The New Psychology of Success author Carol Dweck breaks down the meanings of a fixed mindset versus a growth mindset. A fixed mindset is when a person sees their failures as being an unsuccessful person. These fixed mindsets do not aim to challenge themselves due to the possibility of not succeeding or being seen dumb. They are discouraged by failing and hold back in life. Carol Dweck describes this has unhappiness. A growth mindset is a person who welcomes failures and takes these failures as a challenge to grow from their mistakes. They have the drive to push through the impossible, since to them there is no impossible. A Clear representation of growth
As far as I could remember I was never really any good at school. I couldn’t concentrate on things for no more than 5 minutes at a time I would either get discouraged or find it too easy and just give up. An author by the name of Carol Dweck wrote an article called “Brainology” in it Dweck describes that there are two types of mindsets fixed and growth. Those who are afraid to fail so they never try anything new are ones with a fixed mindset and the growth mindset are those who are not afraid to fail and find a new challenge an opportunity to learn something new. I guess you can say that I had a bit of a fixed mindset growing up I was always too scared to look stupid that I didn’t want to fail because I didn’t want to disappoint my siblings
I’ve developed a both a growth mindset and a fixed mindset due to the many challenges and obstacles that have been put in my path. So many different experiences that have made my mind gain lots of knowledge and have made me the person that I am today. There are many things that I wish to continue to learn until my brain has enough of it and there are some things that I know that no matter how hard I try, I will end up failing in the end, and that’s where parts of my fixed mindset appear. Some challenges that I have faced in life were hard such as; soccer, driving and my math classes. I have but managed to overcome some of
In opposition, the Growth mindset is based on the belief that you can continually improve your basic
Conscious growth has been the central focus of my life for many years. I study what it means to grow and how we can deliberately invite, process, and integrate new growth experiences.
The most important theme covered in this book is growth mindset. As Jack’s journey deepens, readers, observe multiple ways in which he experiences growth mindset. The theme
"Those with growth mindsets reported that, after a setback in school, they would simply study more or study differently the next time" (Dweck 2) . Students in a growth mindset understand that failures are temporary setbacks. That means they must be an effort in the learning process more vigorously. Dweck shows, " Those with fixed mindsets were more likely to say that they would feel dumb, study less the next time, and seriously consider cheating "(Dweck2). By contrast, students with a fixed mindset believe strongly in innate ability. Those get a failure, they would simply think they are not smart enough ,all their efforts has been wasted. As a result, that creates a desire to give up rather than trying
Reflect on a time when you challenged a belief or idea. What prompted you to act? Would you make the same decision again?
People with a fixed mindset are usually not motivated to do challenging work, apply very little effort, lose confidence after mistakes, and are intimidated when things get difficult. And I have experienced some of these situations. I get less motivated when I have more work, don’t try my best, and I put myself down after low grades. I lost confidence in myself after every setback, but I should of been looking to learn from them. I should actually look back and see what I could have done differently after a setback instead of degrading my own morale. For example, I could change the way I approach a test if I really messed up on the last one, or I can stay motivated at every task at hand. I would love to have a growth mindset, but I just grew up with a fixed mindset. And it has basically made me lazy and procrastinate. I should get rid of my bad habits and develop a growth
I know it 's too late for tonight, but I wanted to add something. You can read it tomorrow. And it 's philosophical. It 's about Spirit. Let 's agree that our consciousness is Spirit. That is, non-material. A question that used to vex me is what exactly is Spirit. What 's it made up of? It 's easy enough to say that Spirit is non-material being, but that doesn 't explain what it really is. After much thought, I finally concluded that our Spirit consists of God 's mindfulness of us (meaning it derives from God 's mind) and the associated memories and decisions we accumulate with it in life. One can not ask what is it made up of or what is its substance. Spirit can not be made of energy (photons) or any quantum particle, because these are material.
Respect is a learned behavior. As a child, my parents taught me that order for me to get the respect I want from others, I would have to treat them the way I would like to be treated. My parents said, “If you treat others wrong, then that’s the way they 'll treat you.” No matter if it 's a friend or coworker, everyone should be treated with respect. The workplace is where most people get treated unfairly. Maybe, you were the one being treated unfairly or you treated someone unfairly. In this case, I was the one being treated unfairly. Around the time a massive flooding surrounded some areas in Baton Rouge, La. Another facility that is a part ours because of the same management company transferred to our building. They join us at our facility because they’re building was going under water. Since they have been here for a few weeks, the management team has been trying to change things and make it more like their facility. I have been treated unfairly because I left my job to attend school to complete my financial aid, I was written up and I was on the verge of quitting.
I believe our physical bodies are vessels for something greater than what can be seen or explored. The essence of who we truly are is within us, and I think this is what is frequently referred to as the soul. So to answer the question, I do not believe you have a soul because I believe we are our soul. The soul can be thought of as the essence of the human being. It is something that is beyond our senses so we cannot touch it, smell it, hear it, see it, or even taste it. To explain the soul is quite difficult because we cannot scientifically prove that it is real or that it is embedded into us humans. I believe in the concept of the soul and that our body serves as its temple. Some people have dark souls, while others have lively souls. To reiterate, the soul is our true essence, our true being. Every time we are hurting, so is the soul. Every time we feel joy, so does the soul. Again, to claim that the soul is real and that it lies inside of you is controversial because there aren’t any systematic efforts to prove otherwise. Regardless, it is something that I accept as true.
Throughout this semester, I have learned what the glory of God can do for the nations of the world through the book God’s Heart for the Nations. There are many countries in the world where the people are far less fortunate than many of us are in the United States or a few other countries. So I pray for these nations and ask God to help these people in their time of need. Many of these practices include praying before I go to bed, researching their culture, or sending my condolences and support to people around the world.
