For many years now, people have been fool by appearances. Someone may look at the exterior of an object and expect one thing when actually the exact opposite is waiting inside for them. For example, an unexpecting person picks off a grape from the bunch and bites into the fruit while dreaming of a mouthful of juicy, sweet grape but in reality receives a surprisingly bitter splash with the first bite. Or when a person first looks at a power vision 3-D picture they only see mass chaos until a few short seconds later a sailboat evolves out of the picture floating among the earlier seen chaos. Wisconsin, someone may pass by the UW-Fieldhouse and mistake it as a barn instead of a basketball arena. So too, the Karrmann Library can be easily mistaken for a bank as you come upon it from the exterior.
The first feature about the Elton S. Karrmann Library that makes it seem as if it were a bank is the solid construction of the library. Much like the construction of a bank, the library was also constructed with security and protection in mind. Also, the impressive exterior of the library resembles that of a modern bank. The concrete support pillars not only add strength but also give the library this impressive look of a bank. These light white-grayish, square pillars are 2 by 2 ft. and almost half the way up them there are two engraved lines that run all the way around them about 6 in. from the other.

The award winning Jerwood Library, built in 1999, sits in an idyllic setting overhanging the River Cam and manages to look both modern and ancient at the same time. Traditional materials and methods have been used by Freeland Rees Roberts, to create a lovely building that rests perfectly in scale with its neighbours. The fragmented forms created with red brick and glass give it a gentle contemporary appearance. For long time before Rosenhan conducted his experiment, there had been historical attempts of classifying abnormal behaviors. Notably, medical model was the most common approach in understanding and classifying abnormal behaviors. The medical model mainly specified with treating mental illnesses (Kleinman, 2012). The model is also known as psychiatry with psychiatrists being medical doctors among other practitioners trained to handle mental related illnesses. Since the early 1950s, the medical approach had been used for the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorder (DSM) for classifying abnormal behaviors. Nonetheless, in the 1960s, the model was highly criticized especially among psychotherapists and psychiatrists. This criticism led to the anti-psychiatry movement. The movement’s concern was that the principles of the medical approach were defective in classifying and identifying persons with abnormality correctly (Huss, 2009). David Rosenhan was among the critics of the medical model, and in response he decided to conduct an experiment that would be more effective; an alternative for the medical model.

Abortion is a subject that rises controversy throughout the United States. Pro-life groups protest the practice in peaceful and others in violent acts. Pro-choice groups feel that it is the woman’s choice to decide if abortion is right for her, and religious groups feel that abortion is murder of the fetus and against God’s will.

'On being sane in insane places' is a study by David Rosenhan in 1973 which attempted to test the reliability of psychiatric diagnoses and the treatment of those in psychiatric hospitals. He tested this by conducting a study in which eight 'sane' people attempted to gain admission into different psychiatric hospitals. The argument of the fetus being a creation of God is always brought up in the speeches of those who are pro-life. According to pro-lifers, the Sixth Commandment of the Bible 's Old Testament, "Thou shalt not kill" (Exodus 20:13), applies to all human beings, including unborn babies. Along with that, many pro-lifers believe that a fetus is a human being right from its conception. They claim upon fertilization, a human individual is created with a unique genetic identity that remains unchanged throughout his or her life. Although many religious groups oppose abortion, the United Methodist Church, the Presbyterian Church, and the Unitarian Universalist Association of Congregations are all officially pro-choice. Overall, I agree with the outcome of the Big Five Personality Test. I agree that I am slightly conscientious. I am very well organized when I take the time to be, however, I usually have more pressing priorities. However, even when I don’t take the time to be very well organized, I am never disorganized. I also agree that I am more introverted and prefer to spend quiet time alone. This allows me to rest and reflect on my thoughts and experiences. For me, being alone allows for deeper, more profound insights and thoughts.
Have you ever looked at someone and judged them by their appearance? Normally it’s about how they look or how they’re dressed. How the outfit they are wearing is definitely something you would never wear. People who struggle to fit in don’t want to be “that” person. So they try to create the appearance that would please the people that would judge them. For girls, this appearance is the skinny, tan, girl who wears all name brand clothing. Because of this, the girls trying to fit in by starving their selves to be excepted. They spend any money that they have on clothing that they may not even like; but, wear it to just try and fit in.
A false appearance is like an optical illusion, the eyes ‘see’ something that differ from what it actually is. That is why one should remember that eyes are not always seeing the truth. In the play Macbeth, Shakespeare displays an important thesis regarding appearances. He makes a great statement of how a person can be easily deceived by a false appearance. A great character to be used as an example to portray the idea of deception by appearance is “ brave Macbeth” ( Macbeth I. ii.16). Macbeth is perceived by Duncan, the Scottish king, as a noble and trustworthy man, but eventually turns out to be a traitorous tyrant. Throughout the play, Macbeth tries to mask his “ black and deep desires” ( I. iv.50) from other characters, but the audience can see them through his thoughts and actions in soliloquies and monologues. However, sometimes it is hard to distinguish between what appears to be real and what actually is. That is why Shakespeare gives hints to the audience to guide them to the truth by foreshadowing, and by using the leitmotifs of masking and blood.
It’s generally accepted in our society that “first impressions are lasting.” (Great Quotes) I find it interesting that most people, myself included, don’t always plan to make a good first impression in their day-to-day lives. We usually work hard at first impressions for job interviews, first dates, and presentations but rarely consider that we are constantly making first impressions on others. It may be the checkout clerk in a grocery store, the secretary answering the phone, or the person we cut off from a parking space. I was also fascinated at the presentation of John, the subject of this assignment, on the webpage. It would be interesting to know if my first impression of John would have been different had the titles “Introvert” and “Extrovert” not been so prominently placed above the description. Also, I wonder if the picture next to these descriptions may have skewed my initial impression. It reminds me of the subliminal advertising and promotions we often see in movies. Just as picture placement and subtle facial expressions can influence a victim’s police lineup answer.
First impressions are very important to your every day life. They are the basis of how relationships start and how you are seen by other people. People, based on first impressions, form opinions. The opinions could begin many things and lead towards success or these opinions could be ones that are misleading and have a negative impact on how people relate to you. First impression are very important on people’s social life, in your education and in employment. In your social life, first impressions come from your friends, family, and even new people who come into your life. First impressions for your education consists of your teachers or classmates when you are taking a class. First impressions on employment go from your current co-workers, boss, and former employers. The are very significant in job interviews. First impressions are important, but are not always the final word.
