With this short but nonetheless exceedingly interesting and informative class, I have just scratched the surface of what it takes to make a film. I have also learned why certain production companies choose the cities that they do. In this paper, I will bring to attention what goes into the consideration of the location where a film is made.
The film office I chose to examine is the Pittsburgh Film Office located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. One of the most interesting reasons films are chosen to shoot there is the city’s location. Pittsburgh sits between three rivers: the Ohio River, Allegheny River, and the Monongahela River. Pittsburgh offers a variety of features since it used a steel town, ranging from warehouses, ports,

offices, and other locations suited for film settings. Pittsburgh also offers a wide range of urban and suburban locations that can be filmed to suite any the requirements of any film production (CNN, Pittsburgh reinvents itself...). The Pittsburgh Film office offers a special incentive for films to be shot in its city.
First, the offer of a 25% tax break if 60% of the film budget is spent in the commonwealth of Pennsylvania is a major appeal. Shooting in Pittsburgh offers a cheap and high quality labor force ranging from carpenters, to caterers, to supplies, and human resources. The film office provides additional breaks on living expenses if the space is used for over a period of thirty days. These breaks offer filmmakers the opportunity to use the money saved on additions to the film, cast, crew, effects, and other film related expenses (Inside the Pittsburgh Film …show more content…
Office). Some of the films that came out of the Pittsburgh Film Office include Robocop, The Dark Night Rises, Striking Distance, I am Number Four, and Brother 2. Robocop, directed by Paul Verhoeven in 1987, used many of the city’s urban as well as steel mill settings in downtown Pittsburgh to complete the shooting of the film. Much of the film’s urban settings take place on the streets and in many office spaces that Pittsburgh had to offer at the time. Striking Distance directed by Rowdy Herrington in 1992 used the riverfronts of Pittsburgh as well as bridges and local town settings in the filming of this movie. Pittsburgh had a lot to offer for the filming of this movie. The waterfront, warehouses, bars, parks, and more which were shown in the movie. The film had a great plot which offered the use of different locations for the movie. We see bridges, docks, as well as the cabin where Tom Hardy, the hero of the movie, finds his “dead” cousin who allegedly committed suicide in the beginning of the film by jumping off a bridge. In 2000, the Russian movie Brother 2 directed by Alexsei Balabanov came out. The international film crew took the Pittsburgh location to film most of the movie since the hero goes to rescue his brother, who, at the time, is playing hockey for the Penguins. The film used the high rise buildings, a hockey rink, city streets, and construction sites. The international film crew chose to use Pittsburgh for the tax credit as well as the special arrangements with the Penguins to use their rink and to feature some of the players in the film. Personally, I come from a Russian background and have watched this movie in the native language as well as the English translation. Although I think that based on the story of this movie, this could have been filmed in any city without changing the story or plot of the film. However I must add that Pittsburgh did offer many locations that stand abandoned in the suburban parts of the city which played an important role in the film and offered unique scenery to the audience in Russia who have never been to the United States. In 2010, the film I am Number Four was shot in Pittsburgh, directed by Eagle Eye Helmer DJ Caruso and executive producer Steven Spielberg. This film used over twenty locations in the metropolitan areas of Pittsburgh. DreamWorks primarily chose the Pittsburgh location because of the Pennsylvania Film Production Tax Credit and some of the settings that were found in the city to help shoot the film, such as a school that was primarily one floor, had a stadium, and was near a wooded area. The film had a fictional city called “Paradise, Ohio” but the city was filmed in Vandergrift Pennsylvania, a small town about 45 minutes outside of Pittsburgh. The Dark Knight Rises, directed by Christopher Nolan in 2012, chose Pittsburgh as a setting for his film’s imaginary city “Gotham”.
The city offered a wide selection of scenic locations like old abandoned warehouses, bridges, watermarks, and city streets. Pittsburgh only served as part of the setting that was needed for the filming. Other cities such as Los Angeles, Newark, New York, Glasgow, London, and many others around the world were used in the making of this film. Some of the shots made in the film were taken from the Mellon Institute and Software Engineering Institute at Carnegie Mellon University located in Pittsburgh. The Dark Knight Rises had one of the largest box office sales, making $1 billion in ticket sales globally(The Dark Knight Rises (2012) - Box Office Mojo). I think that since most of the city was shot in the night setting, Pittsburgh served as a great location offering a gothic setting as well as bringing just enough light to film the
movie. The Pittsburgh Film Office was used to film over 120 motion pictures and television productions since 1990. Many film makers choose the Pittsburgh location for many features like tax breaks, great locations that offer a large variety of landscapes, as well as the fee-free locations (locations that the film-makers do not need to pay for). The only thing filmmakers pay for in these fee-free locations is the demolition or building of structures. Another key reason filmmakers choose this city is for the use of the labor force and the skill level of the working unions. In recent years, Pittsburgh’s film industry has been a center of rapidly increasing success as more and more filmmakers choose to use this city for their film production. If you have ever heard or watched the movie Summer of Sam, an American crime movie directed by Spike Lee in 1999 than you would know filming took place in a Bronx neighborhood called Throgs Neck. In fact, I have recently discovered that filming took place right on my block. Located in the Northwestern part of the Bronx, from what I have observed Throgs Neck is manly a one to two family suburb area with the exception of some apartment buildings. Throgs Neck has many events throughout the year, known for its parades such as the annual St. Patrick’s Parade and the Veterans Day Parade, which take place on East Tremont Avenue.
On July 20th 2012 a lone gunman later identified later as James Holmes entered Century 16 Movie Theater in Aurora, Colorado to inflict deliberate harms against civilians with no identifiable reasoning. Holmes, dressed from head to toe in body armor opened fire on a crowd of 70 moviegoers, killing 12 thus labeling this event as a mass shooting. Within 60 seconds, James Holmes was able cause anarchy before police apprehend him. Though the events of the shooting were horrific it did spark a nationwide debate on how we look at the security of public places trying to prevent or minimize future incidents.

From the opening scene of Chinatown, we are immediately drawn into the movie. Confused, intrigued and maybe even aroused by the photos being looked at of two people having sex. Turns out J.J. Gittes, a private investigator, just brought back evidence to a client that his wife is having an affair. Gittes is slouched back in his chair with a cigarette throwing sarcastic comments left and right, and we soon realize he isn't your typical film noir detective. The aura that the set design gives off is like getting off a time machine we didn't know we were stepping foot on. From the pictures on the walls to the stores throughout the town, we are back in the 1930's without any hint of doubt. Not only is the characterization and set design a few of the aspects that makes this movie a classic, it is the directing that allows us to see this movie through the eyes of the main character Gittes. We see what he sees, we only know what he knows, and at some points we can even feel what he feels. These top tactics are a few of the film's strongest points that make it so entertaining and allow for its success in the genre of film noir.

The movie would be named after the novel it is based on, and would attempt to follow the exact storyline. Pencey Prep, the private school that Holden attended would not have to be in Pennsylvania, but somewhere resembling the area. Most of the city incidents would actually be filmed in New York City. Of course, certain streets would have to be singled out, and the costuming and cars, etc., would have to resemble1950’s New York in order to fit the time period.

The viewer sees a private eye and beautiful client. First thought, "It’s definitely another Hollywood crime drama." On the surface, Chinatown has all the elements of a film noir: the presence of a beautiful but dangerous woman, otherwise known as the femme fatale, a gritty urban setting, compositional tension (highly contrasting light and dark colors or oblique camera angles), and themes of moral ambiguity and alienation. Chinatown, however, is different. Polanski shot Chinatown with color film, and though his colors do appear especially vivid, color film precludes the contrast intensity that black and white film offers. In addition, Evelyn is not the classic femme fatale. Though Jake mistakes her for her husband’s killer at first, Mrs. Mulwray eventually emerges as the story’s most tragic victim. Yes, Chinatown for the most part conforms to the structure of film noir, but this film departs from the general genre, creating an entirely different element in which Roman Polanksi examines not only big-money corruption and its malignant obsession with money, but also larger, more human themes such as ignorance, authority, and the pervasiveness of evil.
‘12 years a Slave, award winning film director Steve McQueen associates making a film to, "writing a novel – you're telling a story. " This message is powerful and defines the true purpose of filmmaking that is, ‘to tell a story.’(Victorino) Hollywood has capitalized on the aspect of visual storytelling first introduced in 1985 by the Lumiere brothers with their first movie ever made for projection -- Workers Leaving the Lumiere Factory. They (Hollywood), then designed a Studio System called Classic Hollywood Cinema to Finance, Organize, Produce, Market, Distribute, and Exhibit movies for financial gain while entertaining movie goers. This term was coined by David Bordwell, Janet Staiger and Kristin Thompson to define Hollywood’s film making during the period of 1913 to 1960. From the D.W. Griffith successful 1913 first movie ever shot in Hollywood, ‘In Old California’, to the James Cameron’s 2009 movie Avatar grossing over 760 million in the box office, this process continues to be effective and lives on today.
Setting of a film can be shot either in a studio or on location, depending on the film’s budget, and how realistic or natural the director wishes the film to look. Setting is about the time, place and social environment in which the main backdrop and mood of the story is. In this film, we have a few settings, such as the idyllic Seahaven and the “real” world in the film.
With many different genres and types of filmmaking, it can result in a large variety of stories and conflicts. Nevertheless, film has always brought people together as a society. If there is one thing everyone can notice about films is the achievement in style and directing. The three directors talked about in this paper are the most successful at delivering a breathtaking style and direction to their films. Baz Luhrmann, Wes Anderson, and Martin Scorsese have produced and directed films over decades and each film as impacted not only the United States but worldwide. With the unmistakable trademarks that each director has, it is very easy to feel sucked into the world in which they are shaping around you and the story. Because of these three directors, the film world and industry has been revolutionized for many centuries to come.
I chose to analyze Despicable Me, an animated film geared towards a younger audience, because I was interested in examining underlying theories and messages that this film would be relaying to its viewers. Often times, when watching animated films, children are not aware of these messages, as they are absorbed by the characters, special effects, and humor. But as we have learned throughout this semester, our brains are subconsciously primed by the various surroundings we are exposed to. Since we also studied the impacts of entertainment, such as television and video games, on children, I wanted to see how a popular children’s film might also affect them.
There are certain things in the original dialogue that would not flow in a big city like Atlanta or Los Angeles. Baz Luhrmann 's intrigues his audience by making the setting familiar enough to where people can identify with the characters, but are unfamiliar enough to where people do not get bored with humdrum reality. For instance, we recognize the cars, trucks, and limousines, but we have never seen any like them before.
Offering the unique ability to visually and audibly convey a story, films remain a cornerstone in modern society. Combined with a viewer’s desire to escape the everyday parameters of life, and the excitement of enthralling themselves deep into another world, many people enjoy what films stand to offer. With the rising popularity of films across the world, the amount of film makers increases every day. Many technological innovations mark the advancement of film making, but the essential process remains the same. Pre-production accounts for everything taken place before any shooting occurs, followed by the actual production of the film, post-production will then consist of piecing the film together, and finally the film must reach an audience. Each step of this process contributes to the final product, and does so in a unique right. The process of film making will now start chronologically, stemming from the idea of the story, producing that story into a film, editing that footage together, and finally delivering that story to its viewers.
