While researching film directing, a lot of interesting information about directors who became famous or wealthy off of their short films, movies and commercials. These directors formally based their films off of ideas they would think people would like to watch over and over again. The most famous directors come from people with imagination that can picture what is happening in the movie before it happens. Famous directors can imagine what actors or actresses would play that part in the movie which leads back to their imagination. Motion photography was used by multiple cameras and assembling the individual pictures into a single motion picture. The movies made today cost a lot of money to make due to the equipment, actors and actresses. For example a well-known actor Tom Cruise manages to make between 10 million to 12 million per film. A well-known actress Angelina Jolie manages to make between 10 to 15 million per film. The average amount of money to make a movie in 2018 is 100 million dollars overall. The first important part to making a movie is marketing the movie, the way of marketing a movie is by releasing commercials. A commercial is a televised advertisement that shows the interesting scenes of the movie that will grab the audience attention and will cause them to buy a ticket to see the movie. The cost for a commercial to be televised ranges from 3,000 to 25,000 dollars. For example Fox has been selling super bowl ads for over 5 million each. Due to my research, Commercials usually cost a lot of money but you are making a good investment with your money because millions of people are going to watch the commercial on t.v. A short film is a motion picture not long enough to be considered a movie. when looking at the review of movies , they are created for three reasons. Fiction movies are typically just for entertainment. On-fiction movies are to inform people about history. The last reason is the movie is trying to send a message to its viewers. Movies tend to cost hundreds of millions of dollars and the money cannot be wasted. For example the marvel movie Black Panther cost a staggering 200 million dollars to make. The film director of a movie controls a film's artistic and dramatic aspects and visualizes the movie while guiding the actors to make the vision become true. The film director is in charge of the two main phases, which are pre-productions and production. Film directors have control over every aspect of the movie, such as reading the script to make sure it makes senses, and telling the actors what to do in certain situations of the movie. The film director also has the responsibility of maintaining below the budget for the movie but also finding cheaper actors and actresses or coming up with less expensive strategies for executing the idea. In the film industry, there are directors who merely take someone else’s vision and express it in their own way on film, then there are those who take their own visions and use any means necessary to express their visions on film. The latter of these two types of directors are called auteurs. Not only do auteurs write the scripts from elements that they know and love in life, but they direct, produce, and sometimes act in their films as well. Three prime examples of these auteurs are: Kevin Smith, Spike Lee and Alfred Hitchcock.
The reason why movies are so expensive to produce, market and distribute is that there is a long list of people involved in the process of filmmaking. Producers, writers, directors, actors, technical crews, film crews, set designers, costume designers, hair stylists and makeup artists, are some of the people who need to be paid whose names are seen as the credits roll at the end of any film. Not to mention the overhead costs of a myriad of equipment, props and the costumes themselves required in the production of a film. There are travel, food and shelter expenses if a movie is filmed on location and not in a Hollywood studio (there is a fee to use studio space as well). Once the actual filming of a movie is completed, more people are involved in editing, special effects and sound. These expenses are dependent on the sophistication of the technology and expertise. Additionally, and most costly is the marketing and distribution of a film.
Playwrights various techniques to create a comprehensive tale that isn’t in the traditional novel format. Lorraine Hansberry uses acts and scenes, accompanied by dialogue and stage directions, to paint a picture of the African American’s struggles in the mid-1900s she titled A Raisin in the Sun.
In my research I came upon an interesting trend in nearly every review for movies produced by Simpson and Bruckheimer. Most critics tend not to criticize their films for their merits (be it artistic or visceral), but instead critique the producers themselves.
It may seem hard to believe that Americans would allow such an undemocratic practice in this nation. Fortunately, today filmmakers are allowed to make movies about the subject of their choice without being evaluated for treason. However, the memory of this dark time will live forever. The sound of it echoes through the bowels of a courtroom and reverberates in the hearts of the American people. In the words of former first lady Eleanor Roosevelt, the only judge who decides whether the film industry is “good” or “bad” is the “man or woman who attends the movies”. It is the duty of an individual to evaluate a film and interpret art. The verdict is not reached in a courtroom; it is decided when ending credits appear on the screen.
Film and literature are two media forms that are so closely related, that we often forget there is a distinction between them. We often just view the movie as an extension of the book because most movies are based on novels or short stories. Because we are accustomed to this sequence of production, first the novel, then the motion picture, we often find ourselves making value judgments about a movie, based upon our feelings on the novel. It is this overlapping of the creative processes that prevents us from seeing movies as distinct and separate art forms from the novels they are based on.
In his essay, “It’s Just a Movie: A Teaching Essay for Introductory Media Classes”, Greg M. Smith argues that analyzing a film does not ruin, but enhances a movie-viewing experience; he supports his argument with supporting evidence. He addresses the careful planning required for movies. Messages are not meant to be telegrams. Audiences read into movies to understand basic plotlines. Viewers should examine works rather than society’s explanations. Each piece contributes to Smith’s argument, movies are worth scrutinizing.
With this short but very interesting and informative class I have just scratched the surface of the what it takes to make a full fleged film. It takes much more than I had presumed to make a movie in Hollywood. The number of people that it takes to make a minute of a movie let alone the entire movie was astonishing to me. There are many things that it takes to start making a movie but without an idea of some sort there is no movie to be made.
By definition, a film director is one who is in charge of a film’s creative and dramatic aspects and envisions the script while guiding the crew and actors in the fulfillment of that vision. There are few directors in Hollywood that truly and passionately fulfill their artistic vision; one of these directors is Quentin Tarantino.

Auteurism or the auteur theory is the idea that a director puts so much of himself (his style, personal experiences, etc) into a film that he is basically it’s author. “Film should ideally be a means of personal artistic expression for it’s director bearing the signature of his or her personal style.”(Lewis, page 11) For a film to be “auteuristic” for lack of a better word, it should clearly be a product of its director.
This New Wave aesthetic solidified film as a mainstream artform, stressing that film was carefully crafted similarly to literature. Individual directors, or auteurs, were expected to “author” their films in much the same way that an author would write a novel. This auteur theory and its accompanying aesthetic became the backbone of the French New Wave and was what drove innovation. Breaking free from the screenwriter, producer, and studio driven systems of the past, and putting the creative power back in the hands of the director was seen as a crucial step in solving Cahiers’ perceived problems with French cinema before the movement.
Filmmaking, the art of the motion picture, is a comparatively new art form that combines a moving image in conjunction with sound, primarily to tell a story. Due to the medium of capturing the image is evolving, so is the art in its entirety. Modern technology is allowing a more cheaper, streamlined form of production, thus rendering older methods unnecessary. Celluloid filmmaking is the old method of capturing film on a negative film strip and developing it later in its most natural state, whereas digital film is capturing synthetic and manipulatable pixels on a computer-like device. Digital filmmaking should be a primary film medium but not completely eradicate the dying celluloid film culture.

Offering the unique ability to visually and audibly convey a story, films remain a cornerstone in modern society. Combined with a viewer’s desire to escape the everyday parameters of life, and the excitement of enthralling themselves deep into another world, many people enjoy what films stand to offer. With the rising popularity of films across the world, the amount of film makers increases every day. Many technological innovations mark the advancement of film making, but the essential process remains the same. Pre-production accounts for everything taken place before any shooting occurs, followed by the actual production of the film, post-production will then consist of piecing the film together, and finally the film must reach an audience. Each step of this process contributes to the final product, and does so in a unique right. The process of film making will now start chronologically, stemming from the idea of the story, producing that story into a film, editing that footage together, and finally delivering that story to its viewers.
