The Departed, a movie worth seeing, or is it just another star – packed action flick with a bunch of special effects? After taking a look deep inside movie, decide for yourself. In this dissection of the movie, the adaption, business, genre, auteur, and semiotics of The Departed will be discussed and explained in detail. Usually when people think of Action, Crime, Thriller, or Drama movies; there’s a basic and kind of unspoken line that the movie usually follows. It is classified as a thriller, action, and drama genre. There are four different genre cycles such as primitive, classical, revisionist, and parodic cycles. Each cycle represents different concept of the movie. What cycle is The Departed film belonging to? The Departed should be in classical cycle, which follows the rules and set on the audiences’ expectations. The plot is clearly a linear chronology. The film starts a story of a boy, who wants to make a change in his life. And then, it continues talking about him becoming a wicked cop. On the other hand, a good cop named Billy is trying to go undercover and help solve a crime. Throughout the movie, the audiences can get ideas of who the good guys are and who the bad guys are. At the end of the film, the bad guys are killed and the good guy is honored. Billy, a heroic guy, is given a heroic funeral with flags, gunshot, and a memorial speech, while the bad guys are killed throughout the movie. The cliché in this film is shown that the characters are easily categorized into stereotypes. The viewers immediately recognize what will happen throughout the film. And the results are exactly what the viewers expected to
