The highest grossing films for nine of the last ten years were movie sequels. Movie sequels have been around as far back as 1916’s “Fall of a Nation” and as recent as this years, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier”. Though some critics have successfully argued against the need and quality of movie sequels, they have outranked some of the best original and standalone films in movie lists; with the top sequel contenders being “The Godfather: Part II”, “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban” and 2008’s most anticipated film, “The Dark Knight”.
“The Dark Knight”, the follow up to “Batman Begins”, the successful remake of the Batman series, at the time of its release broke the single/opening day ticket sales record with $67.2 million dollars. It is also, per the movie website IMDB, currently sitting at the #4 spot of the highest grossing film in the United States of America with its successor “The Dark Knight Rises” comfortable at #7. When two sequels of the same franchise are in the top ten list of the highest grossing films, it gives cause to think twice on why sequels are out grossing original stories.
The name alone of the movie is not reason enough for an automatic prerequisite to view the film. The plot, character, the actors and marketing are also responsible for this desire. For example, the first 40 seconds of the December 2007 official trailer of Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight” gave its audience all they needed to hear and feel to get them rushing to the theatres, midnight of July 18, 2008. These first seconds contained the prophetic seventeen words, “You’ve changed things…forever. There’s no going back. See to them, you’re just a freak…like me!” which followed by a goose bump producing maniacal laugh, invites the audience to a psychotic journey with the archenemy of Batman. The Joker quote “Why so serious?” noted in the movie trailer and posters were displayed in movie theatres, social media profiles, city streets and fans attires. These words were just a sample of the media frenzy this sequel evoked. Critics and fans alike have acknowledged the cinematic success of this movie with Heath Ledger, the late actor who portrayed the Joker, earning a posthumous Academy Award for his work.
Movie sequels are not normally dark dramatic stories, they are the comedic action packed movies like “Iron Man 2”, “The Fast and The Furious 6”, “Shrek 2” or “Men in Black III”.
Anyone can teach others from leading by example. Showing others what you can accomplish establishes confidence in others to try out their own dreams, wishes, and goals. A great example of leading by example is Gus, Clark, and Richie in the movie The Benchwarmers. These men meet Nelson, a stereotypical nerd that is bullied by baseball jocks every day just because he wants to play with them. This little boy inspires the men to show others that everyone should have the same opportunity to play baseball, no matter the skill level.
Humans are funny creatures. We judge and classify others and ourselves into groups. We tear apart others esteem to feel stronger. And we put limits on ourselves, whether they are thought up by our imagination or other’s. The truth is, we aren’t perfect, but we can become better, that is, if we choose to. Benchwarmers captures that thought perfectly. Though it is a comedy, and a very hilarious one at that, it provides some very true points to consider. Benchwarmers is a great movie to watch because within this side-splittingly funny movie, there are important messages such as: bullying is a double edged sword, stereotypes can be overcome, and that diversity is what makes life exciting.
Inside Out is a film about a young girl named, Riley, whose world gets turned upside down once her family moves from Minnesota to San Francisco. In this film, Riley’s five main emotions are personified. Riley, who is only eleven years old, is known for her joyous attitude but with the drastic change of lifestyle, she begins to show and feel many other emotions. As Riley and her family are adjusting to their new surroundings, she becomes more irritable and rebellious. As depicted in the film, Riley’s emotions, Joy and Sadness, get lost trying to find their way back to Headquarters. As the decade moved along Hollywood continued to build upon these “pick me up” movies with hits like “Back to the Future”, “Three Men and a Baby”, and “Driving Miss Daisy”. As the decade came to a close, the top grossing movie of 1989 brought back a different kind of American hero – Batman. Clearly, that really bad day called the 1970’s had been replaced by a night at the candy store called the 1980’s.
In the documentary “Fed Up,” sugar is responsible for Americas rising obesity rate, which is happening even with the great stress that is set on exercise and portion control for those who are overweight. Fed Up is a film directed by Stephanie Soechtig, with Executive Producers Katie Couric and Laurie David. The filmmaker’s intent is mainly to inform people of the dangers of too much sugar, but it also talks about the fat’s in our diets and the food corporation shadiness. The filmmaker wants to educate the country on the effects of a poor diet and to open eyes to the obesity catastrophe in the United States. The main debate used is that sugar is the direct matter of obesity. Overall, I don’t believe the filmmaker’s debate was successful.
A League of Their Own (Marshall, 1992) explicitly characterizes an American era when a woman’s place was in the home. Even our modern perspective implicitly follows suit. Although women have gained rights and freedoms since the 1930’s, sexism remains prevalent in America. This film offers an illustration when men went to war and big business men utilized women as temporary replacements in factories, sports, and so on. Here, course concepts, such as gender socialization, gender expressions, role stereotypes, emotion expressions, and language, correspond to the film’s characters and themes.
One doesn’t often think about comparing movies as different as Forrest Gump and The Dark Knight Rises. Because they’re completely different genres, it’s hard to imagine they could have any similarities at all. But after thinking about it for a long time, it starts to make a little bit of sense.
Smoke billows out from a Manhattan skyscraper, damaged by a fiery explosion. This could easily be a scene from 9/11, however we see Batman looking grimly on as a poster advertises the film will be released soon. Clearly this film plays on the fears of terrorism. As depicted in The Dark Knight, the Joker plays the terrorist, while Gotham’s leadership struggles to contain him. The film departs from the superhero ideals of pure good versus pure evil, showing a murky world where moral decisions have to be made in order to stop evil. Because of this, The Dark Knight seems to be an allegory for the War on Terrorism. This paper will look at how the Joker represents terrorism, while Batman represents George Bush and his administration’s War on Terror.
Gran Torino is an interesting portrayal of communication dilemmas, spread out across several characters and in particular that of main character Walt Kowalski. After the death of his wife, Walt is bombarded with unwanted attention from several angles and attempts to “deal” with the attention to the best of his ability. There are many examples of communication struggles in the film, but they all seem to follow a similar pattern, and that is distance in time and culture. I’d like to focus on some of these communication barriers between his family, neighbors and priest and see how some of these walls got broken down, or could have been removed more easily.
When comics were first coming out, they were not all that popular but in todays’ world, they have become very popular and well known. Several of these comics have been turned into films, which is one of the many reasons why the popularity has been rising over the years. One of the most well known comics is Batman: The Dark Knight Returns. This comic was composed and released in 1986 by Frank Miller. With the usage of Frank Miller’s powerful, intense lines and the artwork done by Klaus Janson’s and Lynn Varley’s it has elevated this comic up to the very top of mainstream comics. In Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, the skillful illustrations on the pages successfully create the thought that there are underlying meanings, which makes the atmosphere a very intense one throughout the comic. The work of art that is presented on the pages in this comic are embedded in such a way that the pages become the continuum for the meaning. One of the main themes that are imbedded on the pages through the artwork in this book is the ideological struggle between Bruce Wayne and Batman.

Aileen Wuornos was a prostitute who killed multiple men for financial gain to support her and her lover Shelby Wall (her real life name being Tyria Moore).
