To read or not to read-that is the question. Is it really necessary for students to read and learn about Shakespeare? As John Dewey, an American philosopher, psychologist, and educational reformer, once said, “Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself.” Reading and comprehending Shakespeare is important for students and their learning process because it helps them obtain a deeper meaning of a text. It builds a student's language/dialect and introduces them to different perspectives.

Many people disagree that Shakespeare will not be useful in our everyday life in the real world. That statement is somewhat true if you think about it because there may never be a time that you sit and think about Shakespeare when you’re at your job or when you’re applying for a college. But, because the vocabulary in Shakespeare’s plays are difficult to apprehend, reading his work builds a student’s dialect and language which is very useful when writing essays and whatnot.
Furthermore, because shakespeare lived in the 1600’s, the perspective of his plays were very different from our modern day lives. They showed us how much or how little times have changed in these 400 years. For example, in The Tragedy of Julius Caesar, we are shown betrayal and backstabbing by Caesar’s own friends. Additionally, in Romeo and Juliet, we see the sacrifices that are being made for the two lovers to see one another. Shakespeare’s work exposes us to these different views.
Shakespeare’s work helps students improve their reading, writing, and analyzing skills. We could really use Shakespeare in our everyday life because of the vocabulary we learn throughout the reading and the different perspectives we assimilate.
