The BDSM community is buzzing over the effects of the release of the Fifty Shades of Grey series. BDSM is a physical, mental, and sometimes sexual power role play or lifestyle that goes on between two consenting adults. There has been a large stigma over BDSM and other kinks for an exceptionally long time; the Fifty Shades franchise has started to break down that stigma with little resistance from the mass public. There is a great divide of people in the community who like the movie and what it has brought and who do not like the movie for how it portrays the kink. A common acronym in the BDSM community is SSC (SSC 1), it shows that we care about safety more than anything. Fifty Shades of Grey does not depict that as it should, a movie full …show more content…

Have you ever been watching a TV show and find yourself relating it to your life in some way? You might relate it to some problem that is going on in your life or some issue going on around your society. All of the sudden, I found myself thinking sociologically one day when I was watching the TV series Grey’s Anatomy. Almost seven series in, I started to realize similarities between Grey’s Anatomy and topics we have been learning about in class. I noticed ideas and concepts that related to sociology. From norms and agents to theories and structures, the series Grey’s Anatomy is a great analysis of sociology.

The Americanization of Australian Television is a sad and terrible thing. It is a process whereby ordinary Australians are bombarded every day with images of American lifestyle, so much that it merges almost unnoticed into their own lifestyle. It is a process whereby our home-grown entertainment industry is overwhelmed by the enormous powerhouse of the American economy, with drastic effects upon the modern Australian nation. Not only is Australian free to air TV being dominated by American produced shows, but a lot of the content on the Australian TV shows is sourced from America. American culture is part of Australian mass consumer culture, It dominates our television.
Everyone has heard of the movie Fifty Shades of Grey and how popular it was when it first came out in theaters. Lets back track how did this film gain such a huge audience? Following the print, one of the most attention-grabbing visuals you notice in this advertisement is the gun imprinted with the pattern of the American flag. This is the only element in color, therefore it immediately catches your eye and leaves the rest of the image looking lifeless. However one point of matter most people fail to notice is that the pattern of the flag is both backwards and slanted. This represents a disheveled, unorganized America and subconsciously the viewers think this while reading and examining the ad. Therefore this aspect aids in reinforcing that the problem is an American problem
American media nonetheless is most definitely the most dominating part of americanization. I think it’s clear to say that mostly everyone knows Hollywood and the how outstanding
...d image of black women as purely sexualized creatures are now used by hip-hop and porn industry. Film scholar and gender theorist Linda Williams begins her article “Film Bodies: Genre, Gender and Excess,” with an anecdote about a dispute between herself and her son, regarding what is considered “gross,” (727) in films. It is this anecdote that invites her readers to understand the motivations and implications of films that fall under the category of “body” genre, namely, horror films, melodramas, (henceforth referred to as “weepies”) and pornography. Williams explains that, in regards to excess, the constant attempts at “determining where to draw the line,” (727) has inspired her and other theorists alike to question the inspirations, motivations, and implications of these “body genre” films. After her own research and consideration, Williams explains that she believes there is “value in thinking about the form, function, and system of seemingly gratuitous excesses in these three genres,” (728) and she will attempt to prove that these films are excessive on purpose, in order to inspire a collective physical effect on the audience that cannot be experienced when watching other genres.

Sexual coercion is “The use of non-physical, controlling, degrading, and manipulative tactics to obtain, or attempt to obtain, unwanted oral, vaginal, or anal intercourse, including forced penetration and sex with objects.” (Bagwell-Gray, Messing, & Baldwin-White, 2015, p.323). It is distinct from intimate partner sexual assault in that unwanted sex is obtained through manipulative tactics and emotional and mental control rather than physical force (Black et al., 2011; Broach & Petetric, 2006; DeGue & DeLillo, 2005; Logan, Cole, & Shannon, 2007). When thinking of coercive control in intimate partner violence, it is clear that demands and threats can be implicit. For example, Dutton & Goodman (2005) describe how women report just knowing that if they did (or did not do) an action, “x”, then their partner would respond with a subsequent punishment, “y”. In studying intimate partner sexual violence, many women report such a type of implicit threat, knowing that they have to have sex with their partners when they did not want to in order to prevent dealing with their partners’ negative reactions. Non-consent outside the context of physical force may be difficult to identify because a woman may submit to coercive sexual tactics and consent to unwanted sex to avoid the negative outcomes of refusing it (Livingston, Buddie, Testa, & Vanzile-Tamsen, 2004) or out of perceived obligation to a spouse or partner (Basile,
In the movie, Fifty Shades of Grey, the focus is based on the strange relationship of a powerful business mogul named Christian Grey and a young, innocent looking woman named Anastasia Steele. In the beginning, it is made clear that Ana is not a sexual person and a virgin before meeting Grey who is a lot darker than meets the eye. Grey partakes in a type of sexual intercourse known as BDSM which stands for Bondage Discipline Sadism and Masochism, where he is the dominant in seek of a submissive partner with a no feelings attached mentality, in this case being the inexperienced Ana.
The term "intimate partner violence" describes physical violence, sexual violence, stalking and psychological aggression (including coercive acts) by a current or former intimate partner. Examples of intimate partners include current or former spouses, boyfriends or girlfriends, dating partners, or sexual partners. IPV can occur between heterosexual or same-sex couples and does not require sexual intimacy.
