There have been debates and arguments regarding authenticity in cultural tourism. Urry described tourism authenticity as “quality that emerges from an individual’s experience and is perceived rather than an objective feature of tourist attraction”. According to Henison, pressure from the tourism industry to create entertainment and seasonal profit leads to a superficial and often inaccurate presentation of history. Kowalczyk (2008) gave a geographical definition of festival tourism, stating that it is “a set of elements connected with tourists’ behaviors and their interest in authentic cultural heritage (historical monuments, folklore, sites of important events, etc.), as well as their participation in a broadly understood contemporary cultural …show more content…
The festival features collections of the trademark hand-painted smiling masks, street dances, parades, pageants and food festivals. It is a very festive and colorful festival. Uniquely and ironically, the Masskara festival originated due to crises in Negros Occidental; the depression of sugar cane industry—the primary source of income to most Bacolenyos at the time and the sinking of the MS Don Juan, a Negros Navigation luxury liner which resulted to hundreds of deaths. The Bacolenyos used a smiling mask as a symbol of the festival, and to represent the happy spirit of the Bacolenyos despite the economic hurdles in the sugar cane …show more content…
The festival now not only consists of masks and dances, but also competitions such as mask painting contest, beauty pageants, photo contests as well as singing and dancing contests— the street dance competition being one. Major airlines also sell promo plane tickets from Manila to Bacolod that are specially-priced for Masskara and can be purchased as early as March, when it is cheapest.
The 2012 Masskara festival also embraced the perks of technology, as it was broadcasted on national TV via satellite and for all the people in the world to see, it was also streamed online. Innovation is necessary to keep the festival tourism industry going, but keeping the traditions of each is another equally necessary and crucial

The mass of almost one hundred thousand is edgy. The night is hot, humid, and alive with a feeling in the air so palpable you can almost trace it with your finger. The bleachers are filled to maximum capacity, along a mile-long stretch of paved roadway adjacent to an old brewery. People from all races, classes, and countries are celebrating together at the culmination of the orgiastic, pre-Lenten, hedonistic festival of Carnival. Soon, the first marchers proceed down the corridor to the booming cacophony of bass, snare, and friction drums. The rattling of tambourines, bells, and scrapers add flavor and accent. Like a bird set free, the singing cavaquinho (ukulele) emits its high pitched cries, adding to the frenzy. The marchers and dancers, with their quick, physical movements, undulating hips and heel steps, embody the living sound. It is time for the annual celebration once again in Brazil, time for Carnival, a time once again for the ultimate physical expression of joy: Samba.
Tourism is considered as one of the main sources of revenue for Cuba. Every year Cuba attracts over 2 million people. This island is home to beautiful beaches and colonial architecture.
When carnival was created it was a day for the peasants to have freedom to do what they wanted to the kings and the hierarchy above them, but my question is why did the kings take it to heart? If what the Kings do to the peasants on a daily basis is not accepted when it is done to them on the day of carnival, then why do it at all?
... all filled with brilliant colors and scenes. It last for five days beginning with the King and Queen contest and ending with the Parade of the Bands [www.carnaval.com]

In the novel Dragon Can’t Dance, author Earl Lovelace unraveled the lives of individual characters as they prepare for carnival. Carnival is the most anticipating time of the year for the residents of Calvary Hill in Port of Spain, Trinidad. Carnival day is full of festivities from dancing to the steelbands to the sound of calypso music. The people are very appreciative of their exclusive and very authentic costumes in the Carnival. People from Calvary Hill work very hard to sustain this very treasured and irreplaceable part of their identity with demonstrations in parade by the streets of poor neighborhoods.

The first procession is the Crida or call to action, follow the parade ninot, the splendid parade of the Kingdom, the "song of the wood" and ninots. There is also a Mascletá a fireworks display daylight, in the Town Hall Square daily at 2 pm. The point is not Mascletá visual effects but is making deafening noise and harmonious. During daily life, leisure plays a significant role of balancing people from mandatory social responsibility such as job and identity in society to own life pleasure and interests. In the concept of leisure, it is formed into three types: Casual Leisure, Serious Leisure, and Project-based Leisure, which this paper concentrates on the first two types. As a human being grown up, casual leisure is always excavated from intrinsical interests and it attracts a person to be pleasurable without any skill needed. However, when some type of casual leisure activities are developed into serious leisure which contains skills and professions, these activities rather become hobbies or even at a professional level which bring profound influence on and deepen
Leisure… People put different meanings in this simple word. Some of them may decide to travel, others collect stamps, yet other just simply change their daily activities. What does this word mean to me? Leisure can have a much deeper then that. On the surface it may seam that it is just doing stuff during free time, but looking deeper, it shapes who a person is.

Tourism focuses much more on attractions, helping the tourist experience a change, and is a huge economic business. They each have different rules and guidelines, anthropology being more strict then tourism. However, there are several anthropologists who see tourism as a spiritual journey for newcomers and how it can be a very successful anthropological method. While most people see tourism as an obtrusive version of a vacation, several anthropologists view tourism as a “sacred journey” and helps the tourist experience a sense of solidarity or togetherness (Selwyn, 1990).
