Leisure… People put different meanings in this simple word. Some of them may decide to travel, others collect stamps, yet other just simply change their daily activities. What does this word mean to me? Leisure can have a much deeper then that. On the surface it may seam that it is just doing stuff during free time, but looking deeper, it shapes who a person is.
When I started to work on this paper, a quote grasped my attention “Leisure is ‘nonwork’ That is, leisure is not remunerative, not required by social expectations, and not necessary for status of survival” John R. Kelly. It describes my early childhood much better than I could do it. How long ago it was! At that time, I had almost all day every day to choose what to do and what to avoid. It was the time when I had no obligations. Most of my time I was playing. In any way, I enjoyed my time. I really had …an opportunity to engage in some kind of activity, whether vigorous or relatively passive, which is not required by daily necessities. Martin H Neumeyer and Esther S. Neumeyer p.17 About that time, I started to take classes in an art studio. I was absorbing all the unknown to me techniques. I simply did not really look at the clock. I was engaged in what I was doing, fully immersed. Leisure is the condition when the person by his own will can spend almost indefinite amount of time enjoying the activity.
Well, time flies by, and we grow up. We came to the United States, and I applied a little different meaning to the word leisure. Along with art and music classes, I spent some time on my computer doing my homework. During my free time I played video games. It distracted me from real life and its obligations. These games gave me some sense of freedom with their ability ...

...ortantly escape the routine and the deadlines with the only thing on my mind is enjoying the moment. The Leisure Well-Being Inventory captures my current state of leisure perfectly. The score of 56 shows an unhealthy attitude and condition towards enjoying pass time. The results of this are fatigue, buildup of stress, and anxiety. These things negatively impact productivity and creativity. Staying on task and thinking outside the box becomes more and more difficult to do. Graphic design, while being fun and engaging, becomes tedious and difficult. It requires creative thinking, and fully immersed engagement. The qualities that leisure activities possess. Not only should a healthy amount of time be given to uninterrupted free time to unwind, attitudes and principles of leisure applied to work will make it more enjoyable but also more productive and higher in quality.

Many individuals would define leisure as time free from paid work, domestic responsibilities, and just about anything that one would not do as part of their daily routine. Time for leisure and time for work are both two separate spheres. The activities which people choose to do on their spare time benefit their own personal interests as well as their satisfactions. While some people may enjoy one activity, others pay not. Leisure is all about personal interests and what people constitute having a good time is all about. Some may say that the process of working class leisure can be seen to contribute their own subordination as well as the reproduction of capitalist class relations. Self-produced patterns of working class leisure can lead to resistance to such reproduction. This leads to social class relations and inequalities, and the fact that it they can never be completely reproduced in the leisure sphere. This film Home Feeling: Struggle for a Community, gives some examples of the role of leisure within a capitalist society dealing with issues such as class inequalities, and how they are different among various societies.
Old Leisure is quite contrasting to New Leisure. Being a stout country squire of the 18th century, he is laid back, simple minded, well fed, and financially well off. He reads but one newspaper and favors Sunday services that "allow him to sleep." "He never went to Exeter Hall, or heard a popular preacher, or read Tracts for the Times or Sartor Resartus." He is not bothered by his "inability to know the causes of things" and sleeps "the sleep of the irresponsible." Eliot describes Old Leisure more than New Leisure because today's readers are familiar enough with living a life as hurried and fast paced as New Leisure's. Her description of Old Leisure is nostalgic of a slower paced way of life.
To discuss work, one must first of all try to define work. Once one starts to think about this definition however, one finds that there are as many definitions of work as there are people. Experts such as sociologists have been trying to reach a definite answer, yet they can never agree between them. Although it is accepted that work is that time which is not leisure, one is then confounded with trying to find a definition for leisure. Stanley Parker reached a compromise by dividing our time in five sections, merging from pure work to pure leisure. However this difficulty in defining work should point out that these many different definitions lead to different attitudes, with the result that one can never generalise.
6. Freedom of Choice, fortunately in recreation and leisure we have the opportunity of selecting those activities that we like, can afford, and are able to perform. This is one of the characteristics that make leisure a unique experience. Fortunately, we have the freedom to select what we want in opposition to work, where we have to do what is told to us and expected from us, based on our contractual
My own personal philosophy of leisure has been shaped by past and present activities I do for leisure and why I do them. To me, leisure is the sense of being free from external stressors that I face in my life such as school or work. The positive outcomes from partaking in leisure are generally overlooked and often underestimated. Leisure affects our emotions, our physical and mental health, and aids in the creation of relationships. In my own personal life, I have done and still participate in leisure as a way to sooth myself or unwind from the stress of school or work. The release of pent up emotions and energy for individuals helps their relationships with others and their overall health as well. When stress is released, an individual is
The want to relax and to be entertained has always been a part of human nature. It seems that business has always been able to find ways to fulfill this want. But throughout the history of the United States the job of achieving this task has not been easy. More attractive ideas and inventions were constantly knocking out the old ways to enjoy life.
The purpose of therapeutic recreation is to enable all individuals to achieve quality of life and optimal health through meaningful experiences in recreation and leisure. In this paper the definition of therapeutic recreation will be discussed as well as what should be included in the definition and what should be rejected. This definition will mainly focus on health and use the Health Promotion Model to further explain my choice to focus on health and well-being. I will also be discussing the importance of inclusion in therapeutic recreation for different learning styles in many environments, and the significance of diversity in the community and what we hope to achieve by being fully inclusive.

Working must be followed by a period of rest or recreation to rejoice. It can be said that if our leisure-time is properly utilized it will help us to develop our mind and soul and to get rid of being exhausted with our burdened workload.
A leisure activity is any activity chosen for pleasure, relaxation, or other emotional satisfaction, typically something one would participate in during free time. The leisure activity I have chosen to partake in is knitting. My great-grandmother was an excellent knitter and would make my whole family scarves and dishcloths when she was alive. She would give them out as Christmas presents, so I want to carry on her tradition. Knitting is a relaxing and simple task, so it is a great way for me to occupy my spare time and escape the stresses of work and school.

2006). To me recreation is having fun with people that makes you laugh and smile. Outdoor recreation, to me, means to remember the joy that nature brought me at five years old with friends and family exploring what Mother Nature provides us and feeling youthful again. Sometimes this would be exploring the countryside, seeing what humanity has not touched, and running around the fields at top speed. Finding a new path to take or just exploring somewhere new by hiking to a swimming hole, or even just walking around somewhere new and taking in all the details so you can recreate them in a drawing to share with people and to look back on years from now. During my experience simulation, I walked along paths in the forest by my house and took in every detail that nature provides. I would look at a fallen tree and remember being at my cottage climbing a falling tree and wanting to hang off it. I saw all the leaves changing colour and remembered cleaning up the grounds of my family farm and then wanting to jump into the colourful pile. My experience gave me memories of when I was younger and it allowed me
