Female genital cutting, or mutilation, is a practice in which partial or total external genitalia are removed for non-medical reasons. This controversial topic is important because in some cultures, female circumcision is still practiced because it is part of their traditions, while others argue that cutting procedure violates the females’ universal human rights. Female genital cutting should be terminated because of the variety of problems that it can cause those women’s health. The way that the procedure is done can be unsanitary and expose the women to infections. According to Rachel A. The tools used to perform the cutting can be any sharp objects, such as broken glass, scissors, tin can lid, or razors. Those objects can cause excruciating pain that can cause shock and even death. Another possible consequence of this procedure is a hemorrhage caused by when they cut a female’s clitoris. The females can also develop urinary infections or become dehydrated, as a result of depriving them of fluids after the procedure. The tools used to cut the genitalia of one female is often also used to cut other women’s genitalia, which increases their exposure to HIV or Hepatitis because they are unsterile (Goldenstein, 2014). How can it be right to allow women to endure this pain, regardless of their reasoning behind it? As stated before, some argue that legally, female genital mutilation violates these women’s universal human rights because of the physical and psychological repercussions of the procedure (Goldenstein, 2014). Some of those long term consequences are that they can experience chronic pain, have difficulty giving child birth, and are at risk of many infections. Goldenstein provides examples of how serious some of the consequences can be, like a cyst that can be so large and can make it difficult to even walk or sit (2014). Nicoletti (2007), discusses how young females who undergo a female genital cutting can develop post-traumatic stress disorder
