Health Psychology: Psychological constructs at various stages of Fatima's health
Introduction
Health Psychology is seen as the study of illnesses while focusing mainly on health behavior, illness beliefs, behavior change and health outcomes (Ogden 2017). Basically, health Psychology is the study of how psychology contributes to any physical health problem. The biomedical model states that illness come from outside the body and causes a physical change within (Ogden 2017) Health psychology believes that we need a combination of the biomedical and psychological approach to health and illness but so far there has been challenges. (Robert 2009) "The challenge for contemporary health psychology is to develop integration with clinical health care".

This works negatively as it had caused her not to seek help. Due to her lack of social support from friends or family she had no one urging her to make changes in her diet or to see a doctor. A lack of social support proved to be detrimental to Fatima. Because Fatima is a single mom she is motivated by her kids. Her need to provide for then has pushed her to work a fifty hour work week; the long hour though affects her health. Based on the fact that Fatima is employed but not making enough money to adequately support herself and her kids it can be assumed that she has not acquired a high level of education. Education plays a vital role in illness; more educated individuals usually are aware of their risk factors and seek help sooner. (Hampson, Edmonds, Goldberg, Dubanoski, Hillier 2015) states "education may increase knowledge and understanding of health-enhancing behaviors and their importance for disease prevention and management." Habit is what caused Fatima to be in her predicament. She maintained her habit of eating with her kids. She, however, was getting older and should have been consuming fruits and vegetables. She also had the habit of working long hours due partly to the stress and being the sole breadwinner for her small family. Nonetheless, her habits proved to be damaging to her health as eventually she was diagnosed with Hypertension. It is …show more content…
Health psychology is a system that postulates that not just one approach but rather a dual approach should be administered when thinking about health and illnesses. Health psychology has four theories that are used, the biopsychosocial model, health and illness as a continuum, direct and indirect pathways between health and illness and a focus on variability. Constructs are behavioral patterns accepted by society or culture used as predictors of outcomes. The constructs of habit, delayed help-seeking, lack of support and being overworked are what was seen in the case of
This section discusses health psychology and behavioral medicine, making positive life changes, resources for effective life change, controlling stress, behaving, and your good life. Health psychology emphasizes psychology’s role in establishing and maintaining health and preventing and treating illness. It reflects the belief that lifestyle choices, behaviors, and psychological characteristics can play important roles in health. The mind is responsible for much of what happens in the body, it is not the only factor, the body may influence the mind as well. Making positive life changes include health behaviors- practices that have an impact on physical well being. The stages of change model describes the process by which individuals give up bad habits and adopt healthier lifestyles. The model has five stages: precontemplation, contemplation, preparation/ determination, action/ willpower, and
The study and use of phycology based theories, proved useful for treating people with mental illnesses and medically unexplainable issues. The interest in phycology has led to the development of, Mental Health Institutes and Mental health services, in which people could get help for certain mental issues.
The biopsychosocial model of health was developed by George L. Engel (1977) whom determined the cause of diseases. Biopsychosocial has a deep interrelation with all three of the models or the factors which leads to the overall outcome of a person’s illness or disease. Each model in the biopsychosocial model of health has different insights in regards to patient’s body, health and diseases.
Health and disease do not have a straightforward definition. It has been altered by many people in many points of history. For example, Boorse, Nordenfelt, and Wakefield are all philosophers that have defined what it means to be healthy. I am going to explain why Wakefield’s harmful dysfunction theory is the most plausible. First, I will briefly explain each theory. Next, I will determine whether Amanda Baggs would be considered healthy according to their definitions. After I examine Amanda Baggs, I will defend Wakefield’s harmful dysfunction theory and why it is the most plausible. Lastly, I will consider an objection to Wakefield’s theory as well as a reply to the objection.
In the past few decades, clinical treatment has moved on from biomedical approach to the biopsychosocial approach. Scientists now believe that health of an individual is not merely due to physiological conditions but may also depend on psychological and socio-cultural perspectives(Engel, 1977). The term health psychology was developed by the American Psychological Association to describe health and wellness issues that arise from psychological problems. Health psychology stems from Systems theory, which says that human events such as injury and illness exist within several interconnected systems, such as our peer relationships, childhood experiences, personality and other factors (Schwartz, 1982).
...is family has a history of lifestyle diseases like hypertension, hence, he should be careful on his diet and lifestyle. Though the family claims to walk frequently, engaging a regular exercise program is advisable (Stahl, 2010). Moreover, Linda admits to dislike fruits and vegetables which should be considered while teaching on healthy diet. A healthier diet plan will help to prevent a high blood pressure.
It is generally accepted within healthcare that to understand mental health we must adopt the biopsychosocial model. This model assumes that an interdependent relationship exists between biological, psychological and social factors which are involved in all aspects of mental health (Toates, 2010, p. 14). To be true to the model research must be holistic and not investigate the factors in isolation.
This model believes that an individual may be free from disease or physical injury however social factors that surrounds a person will determine their wellbeing. In the social dimension of health a person has to be able to interact with people, such as friends and family. According to Antonia C. Lyons and Kerry Chamberlain (2006) Health Psychology a Critical introduction ‘studies have demonstrated an association between what is called social integration and physical health, including mortality rates’. The skill to be able to build healthy relationships may give an individual a positive self-image. Poor social skills may mean that an individual may become isolated or stressed. If an individual becomes stressed and isolated they will be free of disease as they will be physically and mentally fit, however the stress will contribute to the health status of the individual. According to Charles L. Sheridan and Sally A. Radmacher (1992) Health psychology challenging the biomedical model ‘attributes like strength, health and attractiveness can be helpful in coping with
However, mental health is more than just the absence of mental disorders and there are a number of problems that can interfere with a person’s cognitive, social and emotional abilities. Biological approaches to mental health view all psychiatric disorders as being caused by organic factors such as genetic and biochemical factors. The role of psychiatrists or clinical psychologists is to help the patient cope with the illness or control the effects of it by means of medication or therapy (Cardwell, Clark, and Meldrum, 2008). In contrast to the biological theory, the social theory to mental ill health offers a holistic approach to try and understand mental disorders. This means that there may also be social factors that may influence a person’s resistance or susceptibility to psychiatric disorders. These could be triggered by certain life events such as a tragedy or stress. It also takes into consideration the labelling theory where society labels a person as ‘mentally ill’ who then accepts that status (self-fulfilling prophecy) and may lead to a severe mental
There are many ways to categorize illness and disease; one of the most common is chronic illness. Many chronic illnesses have been related to altered health maintenance hypertension and cardiovascular diseases are associated with diet and stress, deficient in exercise, tobacco use, and obesity (Craven 2009). Some researchers define the chronic illness as diseases which have long duration and generally slow development (WHO 2013); it usually takes 6 month or longer than 6 month, and often for the person's life. It has a sluggish onset and eras of reduction for vanishing the symptoms and exacerbation for reappear the symptoms. Some of chronic illness can be directly life-threatening. Others remain over time and need intensive management, such as diabetes, so chronic illness affects physical, emotional, logical, occupational, social, or spiritual functioning. Chronic diseases, such as heart disease, stroke, cancer, chronic respiratory diseases and diabetes, all of these diseases are the cause of mortality in the world, representing 63% of all deaths. So a chronic illness can be stressful and may change the way a person l...
Human nature and behavior are forms of development. There are key factors that account for changes in behavior such as, physical, social, and intellectual. Physical factors are associated with an individual’s health and well being. For instance, if an individual has been infected by a disease or mental disorder their behavior will change. A person that suffers from d...
...all these definitions define health and wellbeing in either positive, negative or take a holistic approach. There are many different criticisms regarding definitions. Although, it is vital to remember that these definitions have changed throughout the years and will carry on changing within the future regarding what people believe to be healthy. As established throughout this essay, there is a wide range of genetic, social and environmental factors which influence the health and wellbeing of children regarding the area or district which they live in both positively and negatively which have been analysed within this essay in depth. Factors such as the quality of housing in the area which they live, the availability and location of quality services and the type of people which live in that area and the influences which they have on others have been greatly analysed.
Health Psychology Case Report: Grace Peters Engel’s biopsychosocial model attempts to explain illness through the interaction between biological, psychological, and social factors. Differing from the traditional biomedical model in that it focuses on patient-centred care rather than the biological condition, this model has improved the approach to preventative medicine. This paper will provide a biopsychosocial analysis of the case of Grace Peters, and discuss the relevant psychological issues with regards to the theory of planned behaviour (TPB), the social cognitive theory (SCT), and Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. Conforming to the biomedical model, the traditional approach to disease in medicine was organ-oriented; a perspective that significantly
Gordon’s functional health pattern was proposed and developed by Marjory Gordon. It is the method used by nurse to provide a comprehensive assessment on the client. Gordon’s functional health pattern is divided into 11 categories. These categories are a systematic and standardized approach to data collection. Each of the categories enables the nurse to determine the different factors of health and human function. These categories are health perception and health management, nutrition and metabolism, urine and waste elimination, activity and exercise, cognition and perception, sleep and rest, self-perception and self-concept, roles and relationships, sexuality and reproduction, coping and stress tolerance, and values and belief (Functional Health Patterns, 2005).
Health psychology is a relatively new concept rapidly growing and could be defined as the biological and psychological influences affect ones behaviour also bringing in social influences of health and illness (MacDonald, 2013). Biological determinants consider genetic and biological factors of an illness whereas psychological determinants focus on the psychological factors such as why people behave the way they do when dealing with issues such as anxiety and stress. Models such as the Health Belief Model and Locus of Control were developed in attempt to try and explain psychological issues around a chronic illness such as breast cancer (Ogden, 2012). Sociological factors can cause an enormous amount of pressure for one to behave in a certain way for example gender roles in society and religious considerations when dealing with health beliefs. Health Beliefs can be defined as one’s own perception to their own personal health and illness and health behaviours (Ogden, 2012). There are also theories and models used to explain pain and coping with diagnosis such as Moos and Schaefer (1984) Crisis theory and Shontz (1975) cycle of grief people go through when being diagnosed with a serious illness.
