When I first went off to college I had no idea what I wanted to major in, all I knew was that I wasn’t interested in any majors I was familiar with. I decided to major in psychology, what’s more interesting than getting to know the human mind, apparently I wasn’t interested at all and my grades show for it. It was only when I joined a modeling troupe at Winston Salem State University by the name of Epiphany that I realized that I’m in love with fashion. I loved styling the outfits I wore for the “fashion shows” and the outfits I wore on campus that helped me get nominated for best dressed freshman on campus. After being nominated I decided to look for ways to make fashion my career. It was the only way into the fashion world I knew at the time, also I knew all my credits would transfer and would not delay my graduation date. After being at NCCU for four semesters and four three summer sessions I earned many skills such as: following a pattern, sewing, altering, pattern making, and draping. This upcoming fall I will be taking a tailoring class. While at NCCU I joined Fashion Inc. a student fashion organization that holds fundraisers and an annual fashion show each spring for the Apparel and Textile students to show their work I also joined a modeling troupe for one semester by the name of Evalesco. My life is now a permanent resident in the fashion world, I am just having a hard time figuring out which part of that world I belong

It all began my freshman year of high school when I was told about elective classes that would help me decide what I wanted to be when I grew up. I always had a passion for doing hair, make-up, and nails so that was easy for me to choose an elective. My freshman and sophomore year I decided I would take cosmetology classes. I would spend two hours each day of school in the cosmetology lab, which was always cold and smelled like hairspray, burnt hair from the straighteners or a strong acetone smell that someone gets a whiff of at a nail salon. We learned so much material and I had a good time practicing my skills on manikins and other classmates. Throughout history, there were many things that influenced fashion and the ideal body image of the time. Things such as politics, and changes in social roles were some things that had an influence on the fashion of the day. One particular shocking thing that had influenced on the fashion around the 1800s were sickness and diseases. Not only were diseases and sickness caused by different fashion trends, but it set the tone for certain ideal body images and also influenced the fashion of the time.

Dress is defined as “an assemblage of modifications of the body and/or supplements to the body”, (Roach-Higgins & Eicher 1992).
Consciously, I can remember being into clothing since the fourth grade. Despite attending a catholic school and wearing a uniform from the age of six to thirteen, I would always try and develop subtle ways to make my gray slacks and blue button-up shirts look more stylish. As I got older, this appreciation for style and fashion only grew stronger, since I got to know myself and the world of fashion much better. By the age of 13, I knew I wanted to have some sort of creative position in that realm, but I was always unsure of what title would encompass my abilities and interests, translating them into a successful career. This fall, I got to the opportunity to work as a fashion coordinating assistant at the office of Calvin Klein in Midtown New York.

From the moment I starting my educational path I knew four years wouldn’t be enough to fill me with all the dimensions of the fashion industry. This led me to make my decision to apply for the M.S. Global Fashion Enterprise degree. When asked how this program at Philadelphia University would benefit me, I will begin by giving a background on my previous education. I started my undergraduate degree at Buffalo State College in upstate New York pursuing a Bachelor degree in Fashion Merchandising. After being in the program for a year I was confident in knowing I needed a change. My journey changed drastically when I moved down to sunny Fort Lauderdale, Florida where I transferred to the Art Institute under the same major. I will be graduating with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Fashion Merchandising come this June 2014. My experience at the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale has uncovered my love of education and research.

In history, climate, religion and political factors played a role in the fabrication, styling and even color of the garments that people wore. Today, the fashion industry is multi-faceted, and while climate and religion are still some factors in how we dress, there are many more influences in what we choose to wear. Time and time again, designers reference historical styles and push them into modern trends. Subcultures illustrate how a particular way of dressing can transform into a lifestyle. In the fashion industry, one must continue to learn about the world around them in order to keep up with the changes in the industry. There are many different ways today that I can keep up with what is going on in the fashion world without going to school, but school will prepare me for the challenges that are to come. The only previous work experience that I had working in a fashion was at Mortal Kombat. I did not stay at the job very long because of personal issues that I had with staff. I feel that I need to get involved in some type of fashion job so that I can network better. Networking is essential in the fashion business, because you may never see people that you want to talk to but word-of-mouth can open doors that lead you in the direction that you wanted to go.
In order to prepare for this career in my future I would need to attend a college involving designing, fashion designing, and a type of art. The education I would need would be a two year to four year college for fashion designing and a one year to three year college for interior designing. These careers take a bachelors degree in some place of art. In order to want to attend college first of all I would have to maintain an acceptable grade point average of what I would possibly assume of a 2.5 or higher depending on the location of the college as well as the skill learning level of the college.

Man has endeavored a lot to bring new changes according to style and elegance that suits his needs and desires.
