Throughout history, there were many things that influenced fashion and the ideal body image of the time. Things such as politics, and changes in social roles were some things that had an influence on the fashion of the day. One particular shocking thing that had influenced on the fashion around the 1800s were sickness and diseases. Not only were diseases and sickness caused by different fashion trends, but it set the tone for certain ideal body images and also influenced the fashion of the time. Consumption, which is becoming pale and thin before death, is something that had a huge effect on the way people in the Victorian era began to view fashion and beauty. Tuberculosis was a disease that reached its epidemic around the mid-1800s both in the United States and in Europe. This disease was one that damaged the organs, it made people very thin, and it made their skin look pale. Fine silky hair, sparkling eyes, rosy cheeks and red lips, were the effects that tuberculosis had on women. People began to romanticize this new look that those with tuberculosis had and made it the new ideal. The new beauty standards of the Victorian era were ones that mirrored the effects of tuberculosis. As Mullin mentioned in her article, …show more content…
Many Fashion trends and ideal body image such as being pale, thin and wearing wigs were born from diseases like syphilis and tuberculosis. Things that were being romanticized, such as diseases or anything that took over someone completely, became the new ideals in society. Because many people were trying to reflect the ideal body image portrayed by society, they went to certain extremes. Some would do whatever it took to get the idealized look, whether it was wearing harmful powder and corsets. This all brought about changes in fashion that led to new ideals and also because of new ideals, people took on trends that destroyed
Victorian Fashion refers to the styles and clothing worn before and during the Civil War era of the United States, 1860-1900. This era was filled with a very difficult way of dressing oneself and to deviate from this line of dress was unheard of, and worthy of being outcaste. Victorian women’s clothing was layers, heavy, and barely manageable to even wear. Many different articles made up the full garment such as the undergarments, the skirt, top, shoes, accessories, and even the hair. How did women ready themselves for the day in this era and how did they deal with all the cumbersome attire?
During the eighteenth century, French culture promoted styles and trends that furthered the gender roles of Parisians. The gowns worn in European countries, particularly France featured elaborate clothing designs, influenced by the Rococo artistic trends of the period. French style incorporated colorful decorations into their intricate court dresses. These dresses were even worn by iconic fashion figures such as Marie Antoinette. The formal dress specifically demonstrates the luxury and status of the upper class, but more importantly the strict guidelines that young women had to abide by. This dress in particular and many alike were used as a tool of oppression during the eighteenth century to hinder women from pursuing male dominated roles
If we didn’t have fashion then a lot of people wouldn’t have jobs because there are a whole bunch of fashion designers out there, also all of the celebrities wouldn’t have name brand clothing because there would be no way to make them because we wouldn’t have designers. Fashion of the 1920’s played a very big role in today’s fashion. Including the material our clothing is made out of also the styles of clothing we wear. Many things women wear today first came from fashion in the 1920's. Flappers, shoe styles, and accessories are a few things that we wear today have came from. Many celebrities still wear some things that people wore in the 1920's including flappers. Have you ever wondered what the amazing fashion of the 1920's was like?
The early nineteenth century which was in the Regency Era consisted of harsh judgments towards what was believed to be a “wealthy” look and what was considered to be “proper.” In Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, the clothing is more than just a fashion statement, it determines how they are perceived and their overall rank and social class in society. Therefore, fashion represents the importance of self appearance during that time.
The evolution of clothing has been drastically changed through the course of history, from the style to how they’re made. Women and men’s clothing changed at different rates. The way clothes are made reflect the style. Clothing always has been an important aspect of one’s culture as well as a representation of a time period. Overtime clothing has changed just as the people it clothes.

The sixties were a time of growing youth culture and youth fashions, which had already begun in the late fifties. In the west, young people were benefiting from the postwar industrial boom, and had no problem finding work. With extra cash in their pockets, they were able to spend more and had begun to refashion themselves accordingly. This higher demand in the fashion business brought out a new generation of designers. The freedom of extra cash meant room for more imagination and creativity, bringing out new and provocative fashion ideas.
The Victorians' obsession with physical appearance has been well documented by scholars. This was a society in which one's clothing was an immediate indication of what one did for a living (and by extension, one's station in life). It was a world, as John Reed puts it, "where things were as they seemed" (312).

There is a significance difference between beauty in the 1960s and beauty today. Social media, fashion styles, television shows and magazines that can help to identify what is the image of beauty. Each decade has its own style, fashion and beauty icons. To identify what was the image of beauty in the 1960s and what was going in that decade, people can look to icons of the time. Jacqueline Kennedy, with no doubt, was the fashion and style icon of the 1960s. Jacqueline Kennedy always looked elegant, sophisticated, and fashionable. She became the image of beauty for many girls and woman. The way she styled her hair and put together clothes had a significant effect on society. Jacqueline Kennedy brought a new look on fashion women today continue to emulate. Today, the definition of beauty has dramatically changed. Kate Middleton is one of the fashion and style icons of today. Her style is very classy, elegant and simple beautiful. However, she has a very different figure than Jacqueline Kennedy. Whereas Jacqueline’s full figure was considered the ideal in the 1960’s, Kate’s slender built is considered the ideal today. Many people have argued that Kate Middleton is unhealthily skinny for her height. People believe that the current ideal of beauty can have a significant negative impact on girls and woman throughout the world. Female are going through extreme diets, exercise and surgery to be like their favorite icon. Also, it is common today to have extremely thin people on television and in magazines. This is the huge influence on society and it causes big problems. Anorexia is a one of those problems. People should have their own perception on what is
“To all the girls that think you’re fat because you’re not a size zero, you’re the beautiful one, its society who’s ugly.” This is the message Marilyn Monroe sent to the young girls of the 50s. Many of today’s celebrities admit to suffering an eating disorder at some point during their fame. Marilyn Monroe wore a size 12 dress (about a size 8 today), and there is no record of her ever having an eating disorder (Examiner). Believe it or not, young people are greatly influenced by celebrities. According to the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders (ANAD), 69% of girls in grades 5 through 12 said that pictures in magazines influenced their idea of a perfect body shape. 47% of girls in these grades also said that magazine pictures make them want to look weight (ANAD). Why is this? The average model is 5’11″ and 117 pounds (Beauty Refined). Theoretically, that is considered underweight. Although Marilyn Monroe usually weighed 118 pounds, she was considered healthy because she was only 5’5”.
Introduction Historically, multiple styles of dressing have been created during the last several decades, which played an important role in modern fashion in the UK. Everyone has a different and unique dressing style in their everyday life. Some styles are influenced by vintage styles which are attributing to the deep effects of old vogue, and another group of dressing styles are inclined into the fresh element. Despite those different styles, some of them have even evolved into the milestones in fashion history. To start this essay, it will introduce the evaluation of the first significant revolution of dressing style in the 1960s.
...ltural causes of it. The media can easily influence people’s perception of the world and create negative or positive ideas that contribute to the formation of thoughts and opinions of what is considered beautiful. Only five percent of the women in the United States have the “ideal body” advertised to the public through the media. When woman learn about these stereotypes of beauty and how they are viewed, they may then see themselves differently and further change their eating habits. They may feel differently about themselves, which will alter their self-confidence. After conducting several studies a shocking eighty-one percent of ten year olds feared of becoming fat! “Of American, elementary school girls who read magazines, 69% say that the pictures influence their concept of the ideal body shape. 47% say the pictures make them want to lose weight.” (Martin, 2010.)
