1. Role Preparation: (A brief presentation, how you prepared your role?) In the role play, I am an elderly South Asian immigrant grandparent (Baba – in this role play) with significant medical problems, arrived in Canada just two months ago. His wife passed away six months back, mentally disturbed and hoping to have some emotional support from his only son who migrated to Canada 16 years back. Baba is also sick, needs to consult a doctor and looking for a quite corner in the apartment where he can live without any disturbances. Baba belongs to an old school of South Asian thought. His cultural narrative about being the head of the family is his duty to make sure that his son and all his family members start following old family traditions. His main concern is his 14 years old grand daughter, who does not wear appropriate dresses and always glued to TV, computer and busy in chatting with her friends on cell phone all the time. He seeks help from his son to cooperate with him, talk to his wife and daughter in bringing back the old traditions in the family. Being a South Asian immigrant myself, I tried to read the mind set of seniors who are real victims of ‘Cultural Shock’. Working as multilingual settlement counselors, I have some experience with senior clients who want to continue with those old family beliefs. This makes the family life quite miserable from many aspects. I tried to picture one of those typical characters and tried to imitate their dress, communication style non verbal behaviour and actions in my role as a South Asian grandpa 2. In the role play, therapist and grandpa were from the same cultural background so I felt more harmony and compatibility between them. I also learned that questioning is an art. Therapist must have expertise in the art of questioning as this is the major tool to externalize the problem by challenging pessimistic version of events and make room for the hope. People have strengths that need to be surface. Majority of the family members have a desire to improve the situation but they have their own suggestions and solutions that may work from their own angle but others may suffer. Therapist mentioned that some family members are part of the problem, but at the same time they are part of the solution as well. This study looked at the therapeutic relationship and its influence in the process of Child-centered play therapy (CCPT). An exploratory single subject quantitative-qualitative design was used to examine therapist relational variables and their associations with changes in children’s behavior in CCPT (Hilliard, 1993; Jordans, Komproe, Tol, Nsereko, & De Jong, 2013). Specifically, we examined changes in levels of therapist process variables and their corresponding relationships with changes in children’s behaviors within and between cases to better understand therapeutic processes that impact child behavior, as well as the therapeutic relationship.
According to smith and Hamon (2012), Families are considered as a whole in society. However, they believed that couples have many components in which makes up the family, if one component is missing, the family as a whole can get unbalance (Smith & Hamon, 2012). In the Brice’s family, communication was the component that was missing. The couple was not able to communicate their differences, which was what caused Carolyn and David to verbally insult each other. Smith and Hamon (2012), also explain that a person who expresses his or her feeling is considered as someone who is breaking the functions of their family system; especially if the person is focusing on the individual who is causing the problem, rather than the problem itself. In the Brice family, Carolyn could be considered the one that cause the dysfunction in the family structure because she was focusing on David as the problem of their marriage, rather than focusing of the elements that are causing their problems. The Calgary Family Assessment Model (CFAM) is a well-known comprehensive and multidimensional template used by nurses to assess families. CFAM begins by having the nurse visit with the family and gain insight on the family’s functioning at a particular point in time. Interviewing the family allows the nurse to assess and identify potential issues. Furthermore, the CFAM consists of three main assessment categories, known as structural, developmental, and functional. Each of these categories contains several subcategories that allow the nurse to examine all aspects of a family’s functioning. The goal of the CFAM is for the nurse to openly discuss family issues, provide insight to families from an outside perspective and guide them towards their own problem solving tactics. CFAM allows families and nurse to develop a plan of care that is mutually agreed upon. The following paper illustrates a family assessment completed using the CFAM and applies nursing diagnoses and interventions relevant to the family’s current issues (Wright & Leahey, 2013).

It is not customary for the older generation of Asians to express their past experiences to the younger generation. Traditionally there is no interaction between parents and their children in expressing their feelings to them, but this is something they can learn. The younger generation wants to connect with the history of the parents’ ancestors and the stories of their family who emigrated to America. The younger generation is finding a way to fill the gap in order to connect with the older generation. They are maintaining closeness by living not so far away from each other. They keep this tradition alive because it is important to tie them together as a big family. Asians always keep family togetherness to tie them close. Asian parents have sacrificed themselves to immigrate to America to make their kid’s lives better. They are willing to do anything to help their children have a better life than they had. Until this day, Asian parents keep their traditions in order to provide their kids with as much as they can for them to have a better life. The family dynamic offers multiple perceptions and needs, these may require addressing matters individually as well as on a group level. There may be matters such as domestic violence or substance abuse which requires both individual and family counseling and resources. In times of crisis families need education and coping strategies in order to regain their lives back. The necessities of the family may entail emotional and medical support requirements depending on their situation. When there is a possible case involving violence the focus may turn to more than medical and emotional support and possible removal of the children from the home may be required.
Experiential Family Therapy is a therapy that encourages patients to address subconscious issues through actions, and role playing. It is a treatment that is used for a group of people in order to determine the source of problem in the family (Gurman and Kniskern, 2014). Experiential Family Therapy has its strengths and weaknesses. One of the strengths of this therapy is that, it focuses on the present and patients are able to express their emotions on what is happening to them presently. The client will have time to share everything about his/her life experiences one on one without any fears. As a result, it helps the client in the healing process because, he/she is able to express their feelings freely and come out of the problem. Therefore, in this type of therapy, the clients are deeply involved in solving their issues. It helps clients to scrutinize their individual connections and to initiate a self-discovery through therapy, on how their relationships influence their current behaviors (Gurman and Kniskern, 2014). By the individual’s family being apart of their therapy session, it shows how much their family members care for them and want them to get help with whatever issues they may be having. This is very important because it is a sign of love and it is showing the support that they have for one another. Therapist have also found that during strategic family therapy, they can help all family members with helping to encourage each other as well as create rules and interactions that are psychological healthy for all family members who are involved. It will make it easier for the family members to all get along and understand each other. When one person in the family is having issues, the other members should take the time to talk to one another and help each other out, especially the family member who is in need of help.
Structural family therapist have exemplified within the context relational therapies that uncovers stressors in relationship between individuals (Vetere, 2001). Structural family therapy has been known to be called “interventive approach” because of the “intensity” to encourage clients to change (Hammond & Nichols, 2014).
Interactive reasoning helps the practitioner get to know clients and form a relationship with them and their caregivers in order to form a therapeutic alliance and help the client succeed in therapy. Interactive reasoning explores the best approach to communicate with the client and engage him or her in occupational therapy. This method helps to individualize therapy based on the client’s circumstances and form trust and respect with the client. Learning how to implement this type of clinical reasoning will help the student recognize client needs and dispositions and alter their approach to meet those needs (Lyons, 2001).
Each member of my family have to feel like the therapist is working with them if not change will not occur. The use of family mapping will help distinguish the types of boundaries that exist among my family. With the disengagement within my family subsystems, using the enactment technique will illustrate the interaction among family members. I am close to the siblings that I grew up with and my father his siblings were very close. With that being said, I will like to see the dynamic between my aunts and uncles when they are all in the same room together after years of being apart. I chose structural family therapy because at the end of the therapy session, I want the restructuring of my family structure.
These four perspectives of assessment involve: communication, family structure, life cycle adjustments, and the impact of the social environment on the family. Family theorist have also further expended on the interaction of family and the social environment. Throughout this paper, I will apply the four perspectives of assessment to asses my family of origin; as well as, use various family systems theories to assess my experiences with family of origin in order to develop an awareness of how my experiences affected me, and to prevent them from interfering with my ability to provide my future clients with the best possible
