By being constrained to only a certain amount of money made me more cautious about the quantity of products that I was buying and what brand the products were. By budgeting it made me realize that going to big name grocery stores isn’t always the most ideal option, such as Walmart and Meijer tend to be more expensive where Family Fare and Aldi’s are fairly more on the cheaper side when it comes down to prices. I realized that shopping at Family Fare and Aldi’s is more convenient for people to shop at when trying to save money and way more affordable while on a budget. By being on a budget and making a plan for each individual week of what I was going to eat for each meal it made grocery shopping go a lot faster, because I had a plan and I knew what I needed to buy and only got what was on the list due to the budget. The limitation changed what I ate by not being able to buy as much expensive healthier foods or as much food in general not allowing junk food or items to snack on in the household, which is a really good thing, but it limited what I ate because there wasn’t enough money in the budget to buy a bunch of food that wasn’t needed for that …show more content…
While doing the budget planner and shopping list I didn’t really have to substitute anything instead I either just didn’t buy the item all together or I bought it in the spartan brand causing the product to be cheaper in the price. The long term effect this budget would have on my health would probably not be the best going on the budget planner that I did for the past week because of the food choices I had on it, but if I continued with the budget planner and shopping list I think it could be a very good thing because it decreases the amount of food in the house in general so that means it lowers the chances of having a lot of junk food around in the house and if I were to buy healthier food options than what I previously had boughten then this food budget and planner would be an excellent idea and be an amazing thing for my overall health. The average American spends $151 a week on groceries; adding up to $604 a month which is taken out of the hard earned pay check of the household. It is not a mystery why shoppers would want to use coupons to attempt to bring down this cost. Efficient shoppers understand the value of spending the time to meticulously plan each trip to the grocery store to fit in as many coupons as possible. Joanie Demer quit her job in order to spend her time maximizing the benefits from couponing. When couponing, the best way to save is doubling up the coupons to utilize the voucher to its fullest extent; extreme couponers will hoard several copies of a newspaper or magazine in order to stock up on the coupons so they can double up and have enough for the overstock they need to hold over until the next sale on that product. Jamie VanSicker gathered 185 copies of the Sunday paper in order to save big on the deals at her local grocery store, sadly to find out the paper didn’t have any coupons to clip. Religiously sticking to couponing may not be the healthiest choice, there are not many coupons are available for meat or produce, but the saving are worth the products given up. My Negative eating habits and recent medical troubles are what prompted me to choose a healthier diet as my behavior Change Projects. I recently went to the doctor and I was informed of my high triglyceride levels and I was put on medication. In addition, I am vitamin D and B deficient. After, visiting my doctor I knew I had to make a change in my life. In the Past year I have gained a little over ten pounds. So not only is this project helping me improve my diet, but has also given me a new incentive to lose those extra pounds.

Frugal means to be cautious in spending money while still living life abundantly. Learning to use coupons, shop on discounted racks, and also think of making the most of things so that purchasing double can be avoided are ways you can become frugal in your spending habits. Those ways are effective, most essentially it is about being happy in life with minimal things. (Cox, B) Always remembering it is not about the price but the value of the items you wanting to obtain is a helpful trick to keep spending under control. People often go into poverty because of the small money that they do receive is being spent on things that the same money can be spent on something cheaper with more value. With controlling spending habits there will be more money for emergencies in the household. Putting more values on things, finding happiness in little things, and appreciating things more all come from a frugal lifestyle. I don’t ever buy clothes, shoes, or much for material items, but I do have other weaknesses that could be improved upon. I tend to eat out a little more than I should. I have significantly improved on this from my undergrad, but I fear that my explorative eating habits will start to take root again as I become more familiar with Minneapolis and all the unique restaurants that I am dying to try. Weekends and evenings tend to be the time of greatest weakness so by figuring that out I can be more focused on specific situations that influence my habits. Through life we have many different stages to where we are either settling down for a nice home cooked meal or we are constantly on the go, running around our hectic lives, eating very unhealthy foods. Especially in our college years, students are always on the go running to and from class grabbing a burger and fries from a campus restaurant or eating the microwaveable foods like ramen. Many people try to eat healthy, but always succumb to the stereotype that eating healthy is expensive and takes too much time. This is a common misconception because there are ways in which anyone can eat healthy and on a budget as long as they eat proper portions, eat the right kind of foods, and excessive.
You know I never thought of grocery shopping as being a challenge or a skill until I had a house of my own and a family to care for. Today's grocery shopping trips in the Lambert household include my three children ages seven, four, and two tagging along. Wanting anything and everything. I use to enjoy grocery shopping and now it takes so much planning, memorization, and legit skill to get in and out within my set budget, and with getting everything on my list. The first strategy that I can use in order to limit the amount of trans fats, processed sugar, and cheese that I eat is to cut back the less nutritious foods that are found around my apartment. Now, throwing out every item of unhealthy food isn’t the way to go because, lets face it, we all need to splurge sometimes. On the contrary, I can cut my options back. By doing this, it will help to limit the temptations that I have in my everyday life. Another strategy that I can use is to control my portion sizes. My version of portioning has always been the method of putting more of the things that taste better and less of the things that don’t taste as good on my plate. I need to start balancing out my plate by their nutritious values instead of their “yummy” value. Don’t get me wrong, nutritious foods are yummy too, but they aren’t the same type of yummy. Planning what I am going to eat ahead of time is another way to stick to my goal. This will make it easier to stick to a more nutritious diet. There are so many new substitutions in cooking now. Trying new things has never been one of my strong suits, in fact, it kind of scares me, but by broadening my options and trying these substitutions it will create a healthier way to enjoy some of my favorite foods. Previously to taking this class, I had never given much thought to my eating habits. I always thought of the way I chose to eat as one of those things I didn’t need to concern myself with too heavily now because I’m a young broke college student. The way I eat is pretty similar to the way most of my friends eat and when you live away from home, that seems like the norm for people in college. However, after applying what I’ve learned in this class to my life, I’ve realized that the dietary choices I make now affect not only my current health, but my future health as well. So overall, I would say that my eating habits are pretty bad, but I’m working on making them better.
