Family can be defined as a group consisting of parents and children living together. The role of the family is to help meet the basic human needs of society (Harris, 2008). The family is the social system and the larger biological context within which medical problems arise and are controlled overtime; therefore knowledge of the family can be significant for understanding the aetiology of the disease and the interventions to manage the disease (Harris, 2008). This essay will discuss about family assessment, the importance of family assessment and its features, the strength and limitations of the family assessment tools and also the role of the nurse to help meet the basic human needs of families. Family assessment is a systematic process of gathering information about a certain family, it aims for a full understanding and a primary view of a family and also it helps to identify the meeds of families with multiple needs (De Bruyn, 2005).
