Facebook was developed by Mark Zuckerberg who was in college when he created this social media networking website. Zuckerberg’s intentions were much different than what we have expected and grown used to. Facebook has allowed different sites and partner websites in on the user’s private information such as, their interests, location, and age. It has also allowed for many users to cyber bully others and not deal with the consequences after. Many users on Facebook suffer from depression, sadness, anger, jealousy and many other negative feelings. Facebook has caused privacy interferences, behavioral issues, and an overall unsafe environment for its users.
Facebook was designed to connect people together and share social media. “Zuckerberg wanted to create an environment in which you could send messages, share pictures, look at other people's pictures, share videos and links and have ongoing conversations with each other. This way, people can stay connected with each other regardless of their physical locations,” (ehow.com). Instead Facebook has become a worldwide problem and is slowly draining the life out of its users. The social media site is causing much dismay over its users and causing an unnecessary roadblock in the lives of its users. The intentions of Facebook seemed great in theory, but when Facebook became a reality, it turned for the worse.

There are many solutions to the problems Facebook causes. In order to fix these problems, it could take a lot time and money and Facebook does not want to waste that. But, if users were to stop using Facebook all together because of these problems, the problems would be fixed. Facebook would lose a majority of its users and then they would fix the problems but it would already be too late. People believe that it is not an issue if it is not happening to them and that is not fair to the people suffering. It is paid to post ads for products like clothes lines, products like the goat case, and for phone plans and other things. Adolescents need to be informed of the consequences of social media also. Many Adolescents always seek to gain likes in order to have a high self-esteem. The concept of Facebook as social media is fantastic when pitched as such. In the beginning that was the aim of the website and it was pretty benign. As the website gained traction and users it needed to become a business and generate revenue. Naturally the website added advertisements in order to begin to make money. Eventually advertisement firms discovered that targeted advertisements generate more revenue than non-targeted. This leads the firms to buy user data which Facebook has been collecting. This becomes a symbiotic relationship, where the only person who does not benefit is the user whose data is sold. User’s arguments are relatively weak though, because they sign away their right to selling their data when they agree to the terms of use. Ericsson references an interesting dynamic about groupthink “a lie as a psychological phenomenon within decision-making groups in which loyalty to the group has become more important than any other value”. With this group thought process dangerous outcomes can occur. If a group of people are involved in a website, like Facebook, they feel more comfortable with the idea that their data may be sold. This is due to the group dynamic similar to the “we are all in this together” mentality. It takes individuals to step back and think about what they think about the system. One’s amount of Facebook reflects how popular one wish to appear online more than how healthy one’s friendship truly is. Constant usage of Facebook allows user to potentially feel like they have a meaningful social life, when in reality, they are missing something. I agree with McChesney on this because, the way our economy works has allowed few large Corporations to have full control over the Internet while earning huge profits.
