Introduction:
Facebook is an online social networking service and became very popular within years. It was found on the 4th of February in 2004. As of now you must be 13 years of age to register and make an account. Facebook has been updating almost every year to make improvements such as the layout of your wall, the layout of your messages, and most importantly your privacy and security of your account. In 2010, the security team of Facebook has begun to expand its efforts to reduce risks to users’ privacy, and it was successful but still leaves some privacy concerns behind.
Privacy and security is very important to have, especially if you are going to be on the Internet and sharing your information with others. Facebook lets the user have a choice to arrange your own privacy settings based on who can access your profile, posts, news feed, and messages. Facebook requires a username and profile picture to be accessible to everyone. Earlier, this was open to everyone and now due to updates on privacy settings, you can have the option of who can search you on Facebook.
Facebook privacy and security have many benefits, problems, and challenges. There is a benefit for every security setting on Facebook but the real concern comes along when it comes to facing the problem and how this problem goes into different steps of challenges, and how we can fix that problem in order for privacy not to be a huge issue. A person that has access to Facebook wants to share their everyday moments to the world such as sharing personal posts, photos and videos, and that’s what Facebook is basically known for.

...ile. Facebook is about connecting with your friends and the world around you. So if they have concerns about privacy, it would be a good idea to stay away from it or use the privacy settings to limit your posts and photos to your friends. Also, users should watch for what they post and share. If there is something they do not like anyone to know about or anyone to view something, it would be a good idea not to share it on Facebook at all. One should be careful for what they post, share and be responsible for their actions. If people have concerns about privacy, the best idea would be to take appropriate measures to make sure your information stays private and that it can be done as mentioned before by taking advantage of the privacy features provided on Facebook. Also taking in consideration of limiting your posts so that it will not make you feel uncomfortable.
With social media websites being the main hub of personal information, advertisers are consistently monitoring our social media activity, having the ability to look into our personal information. In the article "Advertising and Consumer Privacy: Old Practices and New Challenges." by Justine Rapp states, “Fueled by advances in capabilities and interconnectedness of computer based technology, advertisers are able to collect and assimilate information on consumers like no other time history” (51). Facebook has become the number one, social media website around the globe. It is the most popular website used by personal and business users in today’s society. In the article “Using Social Media to Reach Consumers: A Content Analysis of Official Facebook Pages” by Amy Parsons states, “As of July 2011, the social network site Facebook claims to have over 750 million members and in the terms of activity.” (27), making it easy to meet and connect with others. Facebook is considered the “hot spot” for online social activity, however, it exposes personal information about its consumers to
Therefore, this would be an excellent topic to research. It is very easy to relate to because it is so prevalent in our society today. Facebook is a huge part of everyone’s life and I, as well as many others, can relate
Therefore, Facebook is powered by a curiosity that feeds one’s desire to know about their friends and therefore perform surveillance activities. We are all encouraged to be “Facebook stalkers” and to expose ourselves, getting rid of our privacy and making room for visibility. Social media is more than keeping touch with friends and family, it is about curiosity, surveillance and control. We are constantly being monitored and monitoring others. Social media has made us willingly become visible to anyone who wants to observe, putting our privacy at stake, as we also reinforce this behaviour by doing the same to others. It has become a perfect monitoring system, as everyone is aware of what everyone else is doing with their lives in a very entertaining and addictive manner.
When using Facebook, users are able to perform many different tasks while connecting with various individuals. Some of the functions and applications that are available for users include: the ability to create a profile, become friends with individuals, send private messages, post comments on friend’s walls, and share pictures on your profile page. Along with these functions, there must be a level of protection that guards the Facebook account holders. However, according to Facebook’s privacy principles, the network states that “People should have the freedom to share whatever information they want, in any medium or any format, and have ...
I agree with McChesney on this because, the way our economy works has allowed few large Corporations to have full control over the Internet while earning huge profits. In return they provide their consumers with less service and less information that should be essential in a democratic society. McChesney explains how the internet went from being non-commercial to its current commercially profitable source for few major companies. I have always had the conception that Facebook’s main goal is to “connect the world” via its large social media reach, but I did not really think of why Facebook is the number one social media website or why it is able to be that powerful. It is because Facebook and other large companies like Google use sophisticated methods to collect personal data from every search or like or comment and then sell it to advertisers resulting in enormous profits. This raises the issue of privacy in the digital
With more than 500 million active users, the site is a warehouse of personal information. Personal profiles allow users to provide information about their name, age, hometown, relationship status, activities, job, school, and more. They can connect with the others’ profiles and become ”friends”. Combined with a profile picture, you can pretty much learn anything you want to know about somebody over Facebook (should they choose to provide the information). However, what many users fail to realize is that in most cases this information is not only available to their “friends”. Though users can change their privacy settings to limit with whom their profile information is shared, the site gathers and stores more than most of us want to acknowledge. For instance, the Facebook “Like” butto...
The 21st century has brought a lot of modern ideas, innovations, and technology. One of these is social media. The invention of Facebook has completely changed the way we communicate with one another. Instant messaging, photo sharing, and joining online groups have created a way for families and friends to connect. Some argue that Facebook is the greatest invention however, while it is seemingly harmless, Facebook has created an invasion of privacy. The accessibility of Facebook and its widespread use has created privacy problems for users, teens, and interviewees by allowing easy control to viewers.
Facebook is a place where individuals can be whoever he or she desires to be. It is a popular social networking site founded February 4, 2004 and was the first to create the thumbs up “liking” icon (Chin, Lu, and Wu, 2015). Currently, Facebook consist of 1.23 billion active users (Blease, 2015). Near the end of 2011, 250 million photos were uploaded by Facebook users and the like button was clicked 2.7 million times per day (Chen and Lee, 2013). The many functions of Facebook range from people’s freedom to create a personal profile, maintain count of friends, stay in contact with others, post pictures, update statuses, and so forth (Blease, 2015). This is where some people spend a lot of free time browsing and communicating. Different

Keeping your privacy is getting harder and harder to do, but even though the privacy setting can help to an extent, they don’t always work the way they should. Putting information out for the public eye to see can be a risk but could also be used to the Facebook users advantage. With this comes a loss of privacy that the user has to deal with. No matter how many privacy settings are used or are changed they never a guaranty of full privacy. The only real way to guaranty this is to stay away from social media completely. With that we would lose the connected world we have today.
Facebook holds several uses and features for its users. When one joins a social networking site, they make a unique profile that showcases information about him or her, like a birthday or a current relationship status. From there, he or she can “add friends” that they can search for on the website. This gives them access to his or her profile, allowing them to see everything that had created since joining and vice-versa (Dwyer 1). It is extremely common nowadays to have a Facebook profile with many friends linked to you who can see your status updates, photos, and even the places you ...
Today Facebook is the second most popular website in the world besides Google. Facebook is a very popular website worldwide. Someone you know or even you may have a Facebook. A lot of individuals fail to see the side of Facebook that is bad. Facebook has explicit images that can cause cyber bullying, which can affect student at school. Many parents don’t want their kids to go through that. Parent thinks sticker rules should be put in place to make it safer. Also they think its ruining kids and think they can keep kids safer by not allowing kids 16 and below to use Facebook but kids are breaking the rules of the age restriction so therefor its not effective. Also many kids set their profiles to public allowing people to see their personal information such as address and phone numbers. The public being able to view kids personal information gives people all the information they need to hurt kids. Often parents help kids create Facebook accounts with knowing that they are breaking the rules because their kids aren’t old enough. Facebook should have an age restriction and sticker rules because it will keep kids safe not only at home but school too.
Facebook is the perfect social networking site. It connects you with people from all around the world. Family and friends can use it to keep in touch and share with each other. But now, it has become a dark place full of things that seem fake but are all too real.
Just as MySpace has online predators, Facebook may have some too. Some Facebook users have profiles with personal information that are visible to everyone. AOL screen names, phone numbers, and even addresses are posted on the site. Police are now looking into Facebook because a few convicted sex offenders have registered on the site.
The issues caused by online privacy are growing with the increase of Social Networking Sites. Virtually all Social Networking Sites have ‘public’ as their default privacy setting, however that is not what the majority of users prefer. According to a survey by the Pew Research Center’s Internet Project & American Life, 80 % of the users go to the effort to change their settings to private. With the increasing awareness of cyber – crime and the need for privacy, users have now started to rethink their actions online. Carefully selecting whom among your Facebook friends see your personal information, and who should be restricted, blocked or unfriended.
