Facebook is one of the largest social networking sites in the world. Facebook was launched on February 2004 by a few college students such as Mark Zuckerberg, Dustin Moskovitz, and Chris Hughes as a site for Harvard students. Today Facebook is a public site; it dominates worldwide, gained popularity, changed American culture, and still remains as one of the most used social media sites. Over 1 billion people have an active account.
Facebook was created by a Harvard student in the name of Mark Zuckerberg, along with the help of his friends, Dustin Moskovitz, Eduardo Saverin, and Chris Hughes. The original website was called “Facemash.com”. Facemash was a type of "hot or not" game for Harvard students, where visitors could compare and contrast two student photos side-by-side and let them decide who was attractive and who was not. Mark was a student in computer science and he used his skill to hack into Harvard's security network and copied student ID pictures. Days later, students found out and they were defile and facemash was shut down by Harvard executives. Mark faced charges of breach of security, violating copyrights, and violating individual privacy for stealing the student photos but those charges were later dropped.
On the 4th of February, Mark launched a new site called “thefacebook.com”. He wanted to create a website that could connect people around the university. After a few days after it was launched, three Harvard seniors who were Cameron Winklevoss, Tyler Winklevoss, and Divya Narendra accused of Zuckerberg of stealing their ideas. The three seniors filed a lawsuit against Mark and it was settled out in court. After that was settled, a year later, the name of “thefacebook”, changed to plainly Facebook, after purc...

... an exclusively-Android experience, one that replaces the app-studded, cluttered and messy home screen and adds simple lock screen for the Android device with an engaging, immersive and distraction-free version of Facebook, a Graph Search, and even a search engine. All these products fail to become thriving. Facebook did make innovating decisions by buying Instagram for one billion dollars and Whatsapp for an astonishing nineteen billion dollars.
After all, Facebook has been influenced to the world since the start. It allows communication between loved ones to be much easier and accessible through the simple making of an account. It is a popular website, with great features that has attracted over one billion users’ day in and day out. Facebook is one of the top used websites and it continues to dominate the world as the number one used social media network.
Facebook is the current leader in the trend of online segregation of face to face interaction between us and others. 84 million users are registered Facebook enablers. In 2010 Facebook generated $3.7 billion in revenue. Facebook has earned the title of being the first website to obtain 1 trillion page views in a month. Users are estimated to project 2.7 billion likes and comments every day, in the first three months of 2011.
As of 2016, Facebook cofounder and CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, has a net worth, estimated by Forbes, of around $47 billion. One of the richest people of the world, Mark Zuckerberg exemplifies heroic character, not attributed to fame and fortune, but his ability to utilize his success to impact others. In 2004, Zuckerberg decided to drop out of Harvard University in order to focus on developing his social media network, Facebook (The Editors). Now, at thirty-one years of age, Mark utilizes his self-created superpower, Facebook, to connect billions of people around the world. A hero, usually bolstered by a superpower, embodies the traits of ordinariness, benevolence, and idealism. Mark Zuckerberg leads a heroic life by being relatable, demonstrating
The movie “Social Network” is about the ideas and the development behind the creation of the very popular social networking site “Facebook”. Mark Zuckerberg is the main character in the movie and also the actual creator of Facebook.
The breakup leads to the creation of Facemash and catching the attention of the Winklevoss twins and Divya. The trio then brought the idea of Harvard Connect to Zuckerberg. If they have never done that, Zuckerberg probably would have never came up with the idea of Facebook on his own. The third major event is when Eduardo froze the bank account that was used to pay...
Originally, Facebook was started in 2003 by a man named Mark Zuckerburg in his college dorm room at Harvard University. It began as a social network for Harvard students and then quickly expanded to universities across America. Facebook as we know it today started in the year 2004 and now does not only include college students but ages ranging from teens to middle-aged individuals. The social network site has quickly developed into one of the most trafficked networking websites which runs thousands of databases. By building a network that has spread across various countries, Facebook has successfully created a form of technology that allows people to connect with friends across the seas with different cultures.
The situation revolving around these sites is not likely to clear up any time soon; in fact, as freshmen enter higher education institutions, more activity regarding social networking will take place. Christine Rosen, “a fellow at the Ethics and Public Policy Center in Washington” (2), said that the amount of freedom and control that technology gives us also provides a direct route for marketers to advertise products to these users. In addition, she says that college administrators use Facebook as a means of snooping around to find evidence of illegal activity of students. Many of these administrators and employers also create fake profiles in order to conduct these investigations, although, as spokesman for Facebook Chris Hughes says, creating...
...and many more things. Other sites just pictures and that’s boring. I saw the movie about Mark Zuckerburg and facebook and I really enjoyed it. The people on the paper that I got were all people that I know and I didn’t want to do them. I chose to go online and find other entrepenuers. I found Mark Zucherburg and I knew I had to do him. When I saw his name I thought of facebook and I decided to write about him.
The 21st century has brought a lot of modern ideas, innovations, and technology. One of these is social media. The invention of Facebook has completely changed the way we communicate with one another. Instant messaging, photo sharing, and joining online groups have created a way for families and friends to connect. Some argue that Facebook is the greatest invention however, while it is seemingly harmless, Facebook has created an invasion of privacy. The accessibility of Facebook and its widespread use has created privacy problems for users, teens, and interviewees by allowing easy control to viewers.
Facebook was causing problems for University IT departments long before it was ever called Facebook. In 2003, Zuckerberg created an Am I Hot or Not? application on his facemash.com site and was accused of “breaching security, violating copyrights and violating individual privacy” (Kaplan, 2003). So it isn’t surprising that Mitrano, the Director of IT Policy and Computer Policy & Law at Cornell seeks to warn the Cornell student body of possible consequences of irresponsible use of Facebook in the article Thoughts on Facebook. What is surprising is that IT policy guidance is typically found in an actual policy document, rather than an essay or article. Mitrano sought to provide Cornell IT policy guidance on the ramifications of Facebook via friendly Facebook advice from a credible source. Because of missed opportunities to inform, overriding concerns over policy, and lack of knowledge regarding the controls within the Facebook application, Mitrano’s article was not as persuasive as it should have been.
In Betty White’s opening monologue to Saturday Night Live, she said, “I didn’t know what Facebook was, and now that I do know what it is, I have to say, it sounds like a huge waste of time. I would never say the people on it are losers, but that’s only because I’m polite.” Originally intended for the use of students at Harvard University in 2004, Facebook grew exponentially to be an online phenomenon in the years following. In 2006, it became accessible to anyone and everyone with internet connection. Aside from the advantages that give the site its popularity, creating a profile comes with a number of significant disadvantages inherit to online social networks. What do more than 500 million active users use their Facebook for? Communicating with long distance friends and spreading awareness of causes are common responses. Unfortunately, Facebook has it flaws, from limiting the privacy of relationships to creating a form of almost unmanageable bullying, making one reconsider their involvement and think, “do I really want my Facebook account?”
These devices can do almost anything is seems and are becoming more of a intimate object rather than a technical tool. Smartphones are great store vast amounts of personal information, games, contacts, and applications. Many people more than likely have a few social network applications, but only a few are held in high regard and that being Twitter and Facebook. Facebook is a social networking website and service where users can post comments, share photographs and links to news or other interesting content on the Web while also playing games, chat live, and even stream live video. Shared content can be made publicly accessible, or it can be shared only among a select group of friends or family, or with a single person (…….). By focusing on the elements of Facebook one can see how convergence plays a major role in its overall function along with interactivity. Facebook is one of those platforms that seems to be accessed 24 hours a day seven days a week. People always seem to be engaged with this network and are constantly finding reason to utilize Facebook for any reason. It use to be a social network site that one had to log into and out of, but now with smartphone devices one can always be “on” in a way by receiving updated and alerts to whatever they want to be altered about. As the article we read called Digital Cultures: Understanding New Media
In this day and age, many individuals simply cannot go without some sort of socialization. Specifically speaking, most participate in online social networking sites. The most popular and used one is commonly known as Facebook. Facebook was created in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg. By 2007, Facebook had over 21 million users, adding up to 1.6 billion page views every single day. The typical user spends over twenty minutes per day on Facebook and two thirds of the users log in every day at least once. It is not questionable as to why many people have a Facebook account. Facebook is generally efficient, easy for socialization, and not difficult to manage. Most organizations are affiliated with Facebook, as “almost 22,000 organizations had Facebook directories,” as of November 2006. A year after that in 2007, Facebook was named the seventh most popular website (Ellison 1). However, with anything well known, many oppose to using Facebook and hold criticism against the popular network. There are many flaws in the website and the relationships it starts online. Facebook is risking dangerous activities, ignoring privacy laws, and demeaning healthy socialization.
The entire Facebook company is being sued by three owners of ConnectU, which is another social networking site.
Facebook is beneficial to one's social life because they can continuously stay in contact with their friends and relatives, while others say that it can cause increased antisocial tendencies because people are not directly communicating with each other. But some argue that Facebook has affected the social life and activity of people in various ways. With its availability on many mobile devices, Facebook allows users to continuously stay in touch with friends, relatives and other acquaintances wherever they are in the world, as long as there is access to the Internet. Users can upload pictures, update statuses, play games, get news, add people, like and share photos, videos, memes
Nowadays, we are living in the “ technology world”, digital’s century, science and technology are being devolopped like a rain-storm, people try their best effect to serve for human’s infiniti demand. Internet in general and social network in particular are exceedingly funtional tools. Indeed, with over 1.3 billion active users in June,2014 ( Wikipedia), there is no suprise that Facebook has been becoming a leading social network in the world, “Facebook was not originally created to be a company. It was built to accomplish a social mission - to make the world more open and connected” – CEO of Facebook: Mark Zuckerberg (google). Facebook truthly brought many useful; however, it is still “ a double-edged sword”.
