The thrill of flying into the air and winning gold medals is a delightful dream however, one slip and you could be left with a lifelong injury or even death. What a nightmare! With extreme sports come extreme risks of danger which can all be easily prevented. With the facts that there are high risks of danger, protective equipment is not enough, and young brains are accident-prone to injury, extreme sports should be left to the adults. Firstly, the high risks of danger rules out safety of any minors participating in extreme sports. No matter how much one may think they are safe, they are very likely to be injured. One of Vani Sabesan's patients lost his leg in an ATV accident. Losing a leg is a traumatic experience as well as causing …show more content…
They are the poster of safety though it can only stretch so far. According to Vani Sabesan, M.D, "Massive head trauma that can cause permanent brain damage and even death is a very real possibility." (Page 23) In addition, kids grow so fast that it is hard to have protective gear fit correctly. It would be ludicrous to risk a minor's safety this much. Thirdly, young brains are still developing! According to Vani Sabesan, M.D, "...Studies show that a child's brain is more vulnerable to the effects of a brain injury and takes longer to recover." (Page 23) How will a child learn as easily as other children with an injury so serious that can lead to disability? Also, scientists have discovered that the part of the brain that weighs risks versus reward and impulse control is not fully mature in adolescents. The brain is arguably the most important organ in the body and should not be exposed to so much danger. All in all, if children were allowed to participate in extreme sports, it would be very detrimental to their whole life including their mental health, physical health, and ability to learn. With all of these risks and patients who have gone through horrible injuries and pain, they can surely say how it's not worth it. It is best for them to wait until they are an adult to make such a crucial decision that affects their risk of danger and health
“Contact sports” are they worth the risk? YES! Now most people would call you dumb if you said there was no risk in contact sports, but that's no reason to not allow kids to play them. If someone came up to me and asked me “Would you let your kid play football” , i would wholeheartedly say yes.
Children who are active recklessly engage in activities where injuries can occur. Nobody can predict when or how seriously anybody will get injured during an activity, however, the risks of children playing tackle football is prevalent where the dangers are imminent. The game of tackle football on a youth level is dangerous for children since they are developing physically and mentally. According to an article from The Atlantic, “America’s most dangerous football is in the peewee leagues, not the National Football League” (Barra, 2013). According to a journal article, “sports injuries account for approximately 23% of pediatric emergency department injury related visits” (Podberesky, Unsell & Anton, 2009). “Of these sports injury-related
Kids are playing in a pressure pot full of stress and this is dangerous. They feel over-responsible toward team mates, parents and coaches and in consequence, are playing with chronic pain and even concussions. One-Sport Wonder Kids are deciding by ages 9-10 they want to excel in one sport in order to win a college scholarship.
A topic that has recently come into great interest in the media is whether or not children and teens should play competitive sports. Some may say that they should because sports can teach valuable life lessons. Others believe the chance of injury is too great. While some children can sustain injuries from sports, studies have shown that children are more likely to injure themselves biking than playing football or any other sport. “Sports do not build character.
Every sport has its tricks and ways of doing things the right way. You can assure anyone that the sport their child is playing is safe, because there is always a stronger, bigger, faster player than them. Personally, I believe football is a demanding sport that requires a lot of strength, and stamina. If you read the article “Hard Knocks” by Alan Schwarz, it gives a brief story about a young football player. “The autopsy showed that his brain was in the early stage of chronic traumatic encephalopathy, more commonly known as C.T.E.” Many football players die from this condition.
Dangers are all around us, and in Little League competition, injuries happen by accident and they are not deliberately or maliciously inflicted. I guess that’s one particular reason I absolutely love Little League’ baseball. I have always been quite fascinated by physical danger and by competition, especially in sports.
Young athletes put in danger by the competition, aggressiveness, and intensity of sports. Kids everyday are being pushed past limits by coaches parents and fans. The intensity of sports has become so high they are causing mental and physical exhaustion. Sports like wrestling has kids eat different to either lose gain weight. Football player, Baseball player, and even cheerleader have to work out in extreme temperatures. Some kids involved in competitive sports have been taking weight lifting classes and even just conditioning. The youth are being put in danger due to how competitive, aggressive, and intense youth sports have become.
The author is coming from a factual and knowledgeable position. From the way the views and quotes of the participants of the article are placed, to the information about jump safety components, to the number of horses and riders that are killed every year as a direct result of Eventing. The author is also quite clear in that no one is calling for the sport to be banned, she is merely calling to have simple safety features made mandatory for all Events.
Many parents will argue about whether kids should be allowed to play sports at such a young age. In my opinion, I think kids shouldn’t be allowed to play sports at a young age. When they grow older, I think that kids should be allowed to play sports. When a young athlete gets injured, coaches may not be trained for an injury and the child can suffer more serious injuries just from that. Kids want to skip practice so they will often fake an injury, serious coaches will use shaming techniques and call athletes “ladies” or man up, and athletes might not have the best protective gear, making them more likely to have a concussion. Worst of all, coaches
Playing competitive sports affect young people in a good way. They are good because you have that commitment and now its hard to back down. In the "no" section of 'Have Youth Sports Become Too Intense?", it states "Intense training promotes self-confidence, self-discipline, and commitment." Student athletes can agree with all of this because it teaches discipline and a lot of other things. Parents can disagree with my reason, because they don't want their child to go through with intense training. They think it's way too much for the child.
Children who suffer from Traumatic Brain Injury might suffer from learning disabilities as a result of their injury.
Though this argument may seem accurate, it does not fully explain some of the major health risks and what the parents and coaches are doing to prevent as many injuries as possible. In conclusion, young athletes should play sports because, youth sports can be a learning experience or it can be a health risk to the athletes. The three main points are how sports keep you healthy, how they build character, and the values that they will learn from sports and how they will use them in the future. Even though there are many health risks involved, the coaches and parents are doing the best they can to prevent their child from getting hurt.
It is common knowledge that the brain isn’t fully developed until the mid-twenties, which means that children under fourteen years old aren’t even halfway developed, “With the normal neurological maturation, there is a rapid and substantial development in the cognitive abilities during childhood and throughout adolescence” (Patel et al., 672). Concussions in young children are likely to slow this development down, or even stop development altogether and cause major disabilities. All it takes is one bad hit to impede on a child’s development. One important protein that could help prevent serious injury is myelin, which acts like insulation for nerve fibers in the brain (Smith). Dr. Cantu states, “By 14, children have a ‘better myelin-ated’ brain, making them less vulnerable to injury” (Smith). Without myelin having developed, a child’s brain smashes into the skull and tightens up with no “insulation” to lessen the impact, making the head injury much worse; and one that could last a lot longer. Concussions in children typically take longer to recover than in adults as well (Patel et al., 680). Also, a child under fourteen isn’t mature enough to realize just how serious an injury such as a concussion is, or maybe even to know what a
According to Thomas Tutko, the children under the age of 14 are most likely to be concerned about “self-preservation”. Children who have sometimes achieved an injury hesitate to step back onto the field and because of this fear of getting hurt most of the students quit. The certain values should be taught to children about good sportsmanship, teamwork, and healthy competition. Children nowadays will make every excuse to get out of playing sports because of the fear they have of getting beaten up and or getting hurt again.
It 's been outrageous , how many kids get injured per year playing youth sports for school and organizations. The youth who play sports receive plenty medical attention throughout the year due to injuries cause from actions made occuring in games. Health plays a big part in sports because if your are are not healthy many things can go wrong with the body including dehydration, heart problems , and muscle spasm. Playing a sport can be very hard to juggle with school and also getting talked down by coaches and parents. Dehydration is a high possibility because of outside sports that happen in the spring/summer and playing and practicing in humid conditions that you are not well prepared for can be bad and there will be consequences. Parents and
