Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote, "Unless you try to do something beyond what you have already mastered, you will never grow." Trying new activities promotes growth physically. Learning new topics expands the mind. Traveling different places causes cultural growth. Growth will not occur unless something other than what is already mastered is attempted. Activities promote physical growth. For example, sports cause players to grow physically. Bodies are under a new stress and must adapt. Another example is rigorous activity such as running. What was once a sedentary body, is transformed and grown to complete the physical tasks. When a new task is faced, growth is vital in order for the task to be completed. Through the learning process growth occurs due to the change in topic. For example, a math problem cannot be completed before the subject attempting the problem learns the formula. If the subject reviews the formula until it is remembered then the math problem can be completed. Just like physical growth, mental growth cannot occur until the material is memorized and studied. Even though there is mental growth, there is still more forms of growth. Another form of growth includes cultural growth. For example, when travel occurs a knowledge of how societies differ is gained. The remembrance of how a society works cannot be gained in bed overnight. Travel to that society must take place in order for cultural growth to occur. Sense of how to act in a unique society will not happen until observations and interactions take place. Others, however, believe that growth occurs naturally overtime. Although this is somewhat correct, instances and obstacles must be faced for growth to occur overtime. Others also believe that sticking with what is mastered is not consequential. However, sticking with what is already mastered creates a sedentary lifestyle.
