Adolescence can be a troubling but also enjoyable time for most people. During adolescence people go through many developmental changes and also many challenges. This time period of life, however, is very significant to development.
Adolescence is a very significant part of a person's growth and development. During this time of human development, many physical and emotional changes take place. According to Dr. Beena Johnson, "Adolescence represents high risk period in human life cycle and hence requires special attention by everyone involved in health care" (1). This period of development is considered high risk because of all of the rapid changes that a person goes through during this time. Not only do physical and emotional changes take place "but even more life-changing are the intellectual advances during adolescence" (Berger 330). This is why adolescence is such an important life stage, because of the many important changes that take place. …show more content…

Some of these developmental goals include, brain development, emotional development, and physical development. Professor Robert Havighurst stated that, "at no other time since birth does an individual undergo such rapid and profound physical changes as during early adolescence" (1). Physical changes rapidly occur during the time of adolescence, "most physical growth and maturation ends about four years after the first signs appear, though some individuals add height, weight, and muscle until age 20 or so" (Berger 319). Adolescents go through brain development also but not every part of the brain is fully developed during this time period. An example would be how adolescents do not always make logical decisions. According to Berger, "When emotions are intense, especially when friends are nearby, the logical part of the brain shuts down" (331).
