Adolescence can be a troubling but also enjoyable time for most people. During adolescence people go through many developmental changes and also many challenges. This time period of life, however, is very significant to development.
Adolescence is a very significant part of a person's growth and development. During this time of human development, many physical and emotional changes take place. According to Dr. Beena Johnson, "Adolescence represents high risk period in human life cycle and hence requires special attention by everyone involved in health care" (1). This period of development is considered high risk because of all of the rapid changes that a person goes through during this time. Not only do physical and emotional changes take place "but even more life-changing are the intellectual advances during adolescence" (Berger 330). This is why adolescence is such an important life stage, because of the many important changes that take place.

Some of these developmental goals include, brain development, emotional development, and physical development. Professor Robert Havighurst stated that, "at no other time since birth does an individual undergo such rapid and profound physical changes as during early adolescence" (1). Physical changes rapidly occur during the time of adolescence, "most physical growth and maturation ends about four years after the first signs appear, though some individuals add height, weight, and muscle until age 20 or so" (Berger 319). Adolescents go through brain development also but not every part of the brain is fully developed during this time period. An example would be how adolescents do not always make logical decisions. According to Berger, "When emotions are intense, especially when friends are nearby, the logical part of the brain shuts down" (331). Adolescence is a time of great change for a child. It is a time where they begin to explore who they are as individuals and develop their own identities as they get closer into adulthood. Erik Erikson theorized that in adolescence “the main task is developing an identity” and that a healthy identity is developed when they try on alternate identities and reflect on these experiences (Pressley & McCormick, 2007,p.147). Michael Nakkula says “identity is not the culmination of a key event or series of events, although key events can play an important role in the larger process. It is rather, the lived experience of an ongoing process-the process of integrating successes, failures, routines, habits, rituals, novelties, thrills, threats, violations, gratifications, and frustrations into a coherent and evolving interpretation of who we are. Identity is the embodiment of self-understanding” (Nakkula, 2008, p.11). The experiences that adolescents go through daily and over time influences the identity they eventually form. Adolescence is a time when children start to reflect on what they are good at, their relationships with family and friends, questions about sexual orientation and even religion. There are six domains that affect an adolescent’s development which are personal, social, familial, moral, and intellectual. I will be focusing on the social, intellectual and physical domains.

Adolescence is a period of physical and psychological development from the onset of puberty to maturity. The adolescent is no longer a child, but they haven’t yet reached adulthood. Adolescence is considered people between the ages of 13 and 21. Puberty is the physical maturing that makes an individual capable of sexual reproduction. Puberty is important to adolescence because when a child hits puberty, that’s when the child is becoming an adolescent. Puberty is a big part of an adolescent’s life.
Adolescence is a transition which has no fixed time limits. However, the changes that occur at this time are so significant that it is useful to talk about adolescence as a distinct period of human life cycle. This period ranges from biological changes to changes in behavior and social status, thus making it difficult to specify its limits exactly (Damon, 2008). Adolescence begins with puberty, i.e. a series of physiological changes that lead to full development of the sexual organs and the ability to breed and sex. The time interval that elapses begins at 11 to 12 years and extends to 18 to 20. However we cannot associate to a 13 with one 18 years. Let us talk about early adolescence between 11 to 14 years, which coincides with puberty, and after a second period of youth, or late adolescence between 15-20 years. Its extension to adulthood depends on social, cultural, environmental as well as personal adaptation.
Successful resolution of this psychosocial stage of development is imperative in order to acquire an enduring incorporated sense of self and to progress to the next stage of development. Adolescence is a period of transition between the ages of 13 – 19, after childhood but before adulthood. Adolescence can be a difficult period in a teenager's life. Many teenagers do not know how to react or how to adapt to all of the physical, social, and psychological changes that occur during this period. Some adolescents pass through this period without problem, while for others, it is a period of torture, discomfort, and anxiety.
