In looking through the past we may discover things that we could possibly overlook while caught up in the academics assocaited with the field of history, one of those is the very real nature of the human experience. So many times in the quest for an elusive certainity it is easy to forget the actual value of information, not in the sense of obtaining impossible perfect knowledge, but in the power that knowledge can provide for people. Life is full of things that can bring people despair, especially those people who are marginilized daily and so often told they are an abnormally in so many regards; for these people the mere knowledge of knowing they come from anywhere can be inspiring and comforting in ways that aren't easily replicated. These men are punished for sexual behaviors and gender identification that society punishes unfoundedly while also serving as a message to those within this small community as an inspiring piece to give context to feelings unexplored and, perhaps more importantly for the sake of this essay, to reclaim a heritage that they may not be aware they possess. Of course it is clear that Werther is not a professional historiana and the things that he looks for to identify others as a member of the community are present day features; it could be said that he falls for some of the fears that the other writers address as problems with historical perspective but at the end of the day he is seeking history , not with the intent of creating a perfect picture, but the intent to inspire feelings in others and give them the idea that no matter what is said by the dominant culture that they have a place in the world. Perhaps Werther sacrifices the technical for feeling but that is a very human intent that isn't unfamiliar to those within marginalized communities where sometimes the most important history may be the one that inspires confidence and courage rather than the most
