Employers should choose experience over a degree. They want someone who they trust will create more value for their company there is a better way of showing this than having a degree. you have the skills, experiences, and/or mindsets to do the job you are hired for. A degree is not necessary to have a successful career. your success hinges on how well you can prove your abilities of what is required of you by the employer. On the other hand, a college graduate with the best education and book smarts may be completely at sea when it comes to dealing with real-world work situations with no prior industry experience, and struggle to land that first job." Because you have experience and get hired your pay won’t be high and your chance of advancing in the company are slim. Having a degree but not experience can also have you stuck. I feel it is a mistake to automatically discount someone because they do not have a degree. People with more education have higher earnings. Being hired with experience won’t get you the same pay and or benefits as someone with a degree. It may stop you from climbing the ladder. Most high-paying jobs require at least a bachelor's degree. College graduates earn far more over their lifetimes than people who only graduated from high school. The more educated you are, the better your chances of getting hired, and the more likely you are to earn more. And all of that, of course, leads to a better overall living
You don’t need a college degree to have a good paying job. Not attending college affects ones literacy of financial awareness, their ability to receive a job, and their ability to carry our responsibilities.
In “Are Too Many People Going To College” by Charles Murray, he makes this point. By the time someone has finished college, what they have learned has become irrelevant, and the point of getting the degree is to just show that you have one. He states, “Employers do not value what the student learned, just that the student has a degree” (233). This point is very well made, and is carried throughout his article.
In “Should the Obama Generation Drop Out?” Charles Murray talks about how a college degree now days, is looked at higher than it should be when it comes to meeting the qualifications for a job. Most jobs that pay over minimum wage will require you to have a college degree, making it very difficult for people that either can’t afford it or do not believe in it, to get a reliable well paying job. Like Barack Obama said “It’s what you can do that should count when you apply for a job, not where you learned to do it”(Murray 97); a large amount of people have the skills for a job but do not have the degree to show for, making them not qualified for the job. Companies will not even give you an interview if your resume does not have any type of degree on it. That situation makes life very unfair for multiple individuals. There should be some kind of certification test for applicant to take to see if he or she meets the skills needed for the job. Contrary to popular belief, a college education can help with any job, regardless of whether the job is within a certain major or not. There is a graph that was published in the article “Value of a College Degree” and it does a phenomenal job showing the difference between having a high school degree compared to having some sort of college education. Although it shows that the average person who gets a bachelors in college tends to make about 500 dollars more than someone that only has a high school diploma, it also shows that the unemployment rate for people with a bachelors degree is about half that of someone with only a high school diploma
Most people know that having a college degree could get you a higher paycheck. However, what people do not know is how much of a difference that degree could get you. Through a study of more than 6 million employees, it was found that people with a four-year degree make about $215,000 more than people without a degree. In addition, people with a graduate degree can make about $440,000 more over a period of twenty years, according to The Ladders (2013, September 7 p. 1). Three quarters of the highest paying industries, eighty percent professionals hold at least a four-year degree. (The Ladders 2013, September 3 p. 2).
When determining which applicant to hire, an employer that follows the common trend among society will analyze the difference in education levels. A degree seems to simply reach the consideration point of an employer, and from that baseline potential employees are judged based on their level of education, where they gained their education, and how successful they appear to be in their education. With a bachelor’s degree people earn $58,000 and people with an associates earn $42,000 or more(Lucier). A High School diploma is not worth as much as a college degree. A High school diploma means less today because of the shaping of the world. People who only have a high school diploma earn only about $33,000. These numbers also depend on the type of field that you are going into. For example, people that have a bachelor’s degree in engineering or management will earn a little bit more (Lynn). Hundreds of layoffs and fewer openings can really make it hard on those who have just graduated and are trying to find a career. Just because you have a college education does not guarantee a job, or job security. It just makes you a better candidate.
Whereas having the degree and experience would show the employers that I have the skills and knowledge of doing the job up to the standard. This would also this an advantage as it would allow me to earn higher wages compared to people that don’t have degrees. Having done an undergraduate degree, it would also give me the experience of university itself.
