Experience with My Group Project
Working with my group for the project gave me a chance not only to understand and learn the group working culture, but also to understand more about my group members or my classmates. Despite some difficulties and discomfort, I thought this was a great learning process that I had ever had in my life.
Our project was related to the process of discover an average life of a college student through the ways he/she would do to become rich, which was an interesting topic for me. At first, my group was reluctant between this topic and another topic which was related to sports; however, we decided to go with the first one because of its close relationship with the American culture and with a student’s life. Getting rich was the economic ambition of many people, and I wanted to learn how it would be viewed from social scientific aspects. After doing the project, I learned that it was difficult to conduct interview and survey without asking leading questions. My group firstly started some interviews with open-answer questions, and the variation of the answers was quite large. Then, we narrowed down the answers by changing the questions to multiple choices; however, this might result in biased answers if our sample was too small.
The experience when working with my group was fun and good when my group members came to class or had in-person meetings after class. I remembered there were two or three times I had the chances to discuss the project with the whole group, and I really appreciated those discussions. Kevin pointed out some good ideas for our project when he went to class. Mathew usually went to class and had discussion with me. For examples, the idea to present the song at the beginning of our presentation was strongly disagreed at first place, and I would have no chance to present it if my group members did go to class to discussion the project on the day we were allowed to make our final decisions.
Doing the group project gave me an opportunity not only to learn about the topic that my group chose, but also have interactions with others when doing interviews and group work. This process helped me understand and experience real life’s working environment and prepare for my future career. The project also strengthened a thing that I considered important in my life: I could not judge people by my own values; sometimes, I had to put myself into one’s position and context to understand them and their behaviors.
In addition to this, I feel that my Team building class gave me good insight into the inner workings and mechanics of how teams work. More work.

I think our group worked well together. We got along nicely and did the work we were supposed to do. During collaboration, what worked was going downstairs or into the collaboration room. It really helped us focus on what we needed to get done. Sometimes, however, we wouldn't do our work and just goof off, but we ended up getting all of our work done on time. Specific to her situation, it seems that aside from the very first group meeting, Mike was not present for the forming stage of the group. As a result, questions such as “What can the group offer me?”, “Can my needs be met and still contribute to the group”, and other discovery inquiries did not get answered for Mike so he has not felt part of the team so he has withdrawn from the group. As a leader, Christine could have encouraged to Mike the importance of being present for group meetings so he can be part of the team. For example, at the lunch room incident when Mike walked away, she could have talked with him individually and explained to him that she perceives that he does not feel welcome and has been avoiding team meetings. Christine could address the how important it is to attend the team meetings, explain to him the “WWIFM” (what’s in it for me) aspects and the fact that team needs him as he has so much that could contribute and add value to the team. She could also indicate that the team’s success will only be possible when every member contributes. By doing so, she can help ensure that Mike is able to join the group during the forming stage and hopefully move quickly to the norming and then performing stages.

When working on a group project, there are certain skills that are required to make sure that the tasks are being carried out smoothly. With that in mind, it is critical to keep an open line of communication as well as an understanding of the other individuals in the group. The following scenario is of a group project I was a part of that had a breakdown in the two points expressed above.
In a team-oriented setting, everyone contributes to how well the group succeeds overall. You work with fellow members of the group to complete the work that needs to be done. Having the right people in the correct roles is an important factor in measuring the success of a team, where you are united with the other members to complete the main goals. Every group is made up of definite strengths and weaknesses. Our team's 3-5 major strengths necessary to work accordingly consist of Informer, Summarizer, Orienter, Piggy-Backer, and Encourager. One of our strengths as a team is that we get input from everyone involved. Every member of our team is a leader in some way. Part of being a good leader is knowing how important it is to receive the best ideas from each member of their team. We attend group meetings where we discuss any challenges, issues, and problems. At these meetings, we often exchange ideas or brainstorm new ones with each other and come up with the best and most creative team solutions as potential answers to those perceived problems.
My experience with working with a group is that the longer you work together, it feels like the people I work with becomes a family. Sometimes we argue; sometimes we pick each other up when things are tough, but we also work together when things need to be accomplished. Getting a new job is always an adventure; normally, I walk through the door on the first day with fresh eyes and a fresh mind. That is exactly how I entered my first day at CVS Pharmacy (later to be known as CVS Health). Because this was my first retail job, it already seemed better than my experiences with the food and beverage industry. For about four years, I had been in and out of the restaurant business and believed that there had to be something a little more relaxed. Obviously, what I was doing was not my calling, which is why I applied to CVS. It had opportunity for advancement and a relaxed atmosphere. A friends’ wife that works for this particular CVS and helped me get my foot in the door. Walking through the double automatic doors, I could see the cashier, who I would later know as Alyssa, smiling at a customer. My “new” manager approached me with a genuine smile. Just the positive atmosphere and environment set the tone of how it would be working here.
In order to evaluate my role within the group, it is important to identify what makes a group. A group must firstly consist of more than three members, “Two members have personal relationships; with three or more there is a change in quality” of the personal relationship. (Bion 1961, p26) The group must have a common purpose or a goal in order to succeed. Having now completed my group work task, I can look back and reflect upon the process that my group went through to get to the presentation end point.
After a review of my performance in the assigned group, I have learned a great deal about myself and behavior in the team-setting situation. This is not the first experience in a team-setting. Previous team setting experiences were conducted in sporting and recreational environments rather than academics. While the setting and the environments were indeed different, there were many commonalities and correlations between the team settings I previously experiences and the current academic team-setting experience for this academic course project.
Group projects are much more enjoyable when tasks are evenly distributed to each group member. I have learned that if you are willing to let go of some of the control, group members are typically very willing to make a positive contribution to the project. This is especially true when you are allowed to pick the members of the group. As long as everyone is striving to do their best, there is almost always a positive outcome. Nevertheless, these groups generally still have one or two people who always step up to take charge and make sure that everyone is on the same page.
A group can be defined as ‘any number of people who (1) interact with one another; (2) are psychologically aware of one another and (3) perceive themselves to be a group’ (Mullins, L, 2007, p.299). Certain tasks can only be performed by combined effort of a group. Organisations can use groups to carry out projects, which will help to achieve its overall aim. However, for the group to be successful, they must understand what is expected of them and have the right skills to complete the task. . Mullins, L, 2006.
Working together with other people for an assignment can be a challenging task in some cases but luckily, I worked well with my group members. The decisions we made were anonymous although we paced ourselves individually when it came to completing our separate parts of the essay. As a group I believe that we connected well on an interpersonal level as all four of us were able to make alterations to any problem together . Furthermore, we did not give each other a chance to get angry at one another as we knew that this would only cause conflict that would disrupt our flow as a group. There was an equal divide in the amount of work that we all did; our contributions were fair and no one was lacking behind. In addition, my group members were great at keeping each other informed if one of us were not able to attend a group meeting; emails were sent out informing us what we missed and ideas that were formulated. Everyone in my group worked according to deadlines and in synchronization with each other; we did not have to nag anyone to complete work or wait on a member to complete their task.
Many times people forget that teamwork is a combination of the words TEAM and WORK. Which means it takes more than a combined group of people or a team, but it takes that and actions. Positivity, effective skills and effort from each group member. A good team member does their share of work in the group. equity and fairness are key in being a good team member also. A few other characteristics that help a group be successful are , positivity, complimenting other members, communication skills and fairness. By fairness I mean allowing everyone the chance to do something. This group project taught me the ability to be a team player. This is a skill needed to be successful in a group. I feel like it benefit me and my group members because normally
