Have you ever been in a situation where your joints started to hurt, or maybe you’ve been in a situation where you had a heavy bag to lug around? Well science is on the come up and developing new ways of helping out our bodies. These new inventions are called exo suits and they help by taking weight off of your body. In this essay, I’ll be talking about these exo suits and how they work. Many people struggle with body pains, weather it’s because of medical issues or just old age, some people just have a hard time getting around. Exo suits are a new and upcoming idea that help relieve put on your body. First, I think I should fully explain what exo suits are. Exo suits are a wearable piece of material, almost like a sleeve that you would see someone wear that is going to play sports or work out. The exo suit helps with energy conservation as you move. “The wearable robot, or exosuit, reduces the amount of energy used while carrying a heavy weight by about 7 percent, on average, the researchers found” (Geggel). “These wearable garments provide means to transmit assistive torques to a wearer’s joints without the use of rigid external structures” (Harvard Biodesign Lab). Exo suits use torque, they create torque along the joints to help pull and push the joints using momentum, which helps by relieving pain or stress. Also, using torque and a little bit of momentum you wouldn't need to put much energy into walking. These exo suits are connected to two motors that are in a backpack, where the energy travels through cables into the suit and then back to the person. “This energy then helps the hip and ankle joints, which together provide about 80 percent of the power produced by the leg joints while a person is walking, the researchers said”

They now are very useful in allowing amputees to lead a more normal life. This paper will outline the advanced technology of bionic limbs. These bionic products combine artificial intelligence with human philosophy to create a more human-like way to restore the function of a lost limb. These bionic limbs take the pressure off amputees by sensing how their lost limb should move and adapts to movement of the amputee. The bionic product automatically controls itself without the amputee having to think about how to move it. The purpose of this paper is to inform about bionic products. It will further explain how they operate, along with their efficacy in prosthetics. Innovative bionic technology continuously increases the quality of life for amputees. That innovative technology will be explored through this paper, along with their specific functions and operations. The new products like the Power Knee, the Rheo Knee, the Propio Foot, and Symbiotic leg allow more mobility and individualistic movement for the amputee. Each was developed and tested to be efficient in the prosthetic world. I will explore case studies of people who have these products. I will explore the struggles and adaptions they had to make with the use of this technology.
Orthotics is the branch of medicine that deals with the provision and use of artificial devices such as splints and braces. Several orthotic devices use robotic technology and quite often take the form of a powered exoskeleton. A powered exoskeleton comprises of an outer frame that is worn by an individual and is powered by a system of hydraulics and motors at enhances the power potential of its operator’s limbs. For example, Rex by Rex Bionics is a hands-free, independently controlled robotic exoskeleton that enables paraplegics to stand and walk [13]. Powered exoskeletons are being rigorously researched by scientists for military purposes. This research will in turn help in the development of exoskeletons for medical intent, but a major obstacle in the success of powered exoskeletons is their need for enormous amounts of energy to function. Unless there is a technological breakthrough in portable energy, exoskeletons will not reach their full potential.

The purpose and idea behind the ET Assist is to create a portable, weighted grip that attaches to existing silverware. This allows the patient to go to restaurants, tailgates and dinner parties with the product to attach to utensils rather than carrying the embarrassing, existing product with them or being forced to eat without one. Prototypes will be developed that are dishwasher safe, available in packages of 3 utensils in attractive colors. The concept of being portable and attractive set the ET Assist apart from its competition. The materials, latches, and weights of the ET Assist have yet to be determined. Students have been advised to not share the technological ideas until a patent is filed. However, the prototypes will be pilot tested amongst patients and therapists, feedback will be taken into consideration and edits will be made. Students are open to the option of selling the patent and licensing the technology to an existing utensil or kitchenware company. Prices will be determined once the materials and manufacturing costs have been set.
