This paper will focus on my theory of choice, Cognitive Behavior and my theory determined based on the results of a counseling theory self-inventory, Existential. It will discuss the similarities and the differences between the identified theory of choice and the strongest philosophy established. Considering the philosophical approaches that differ and consists of well define techniques. This paper will explain that Existential can be used to treat a broad number of psychological issues whereas Cognitive Behavior can be used to overcome problematic thought patterns and to change behaviors in ways to improve moods. I do not believe that I would incorporate this theory into my counseling sessions because it was at the bottom of my choices and really would not use it. I do consider this theory to work best with clients who are trying to function through developmental or situational crisis. Principally, this theory is very useful for adolescents that are struggling with identity issues and major transitions. Today’s generation of young clinicians appear unfamiliar with how to incorporate existential concepts when treating adolescents experiencing internalizing symptoms. (Shumaker, 2012). Some school counselors may discover it difficult to find work in school settings because the approach may not be effective short term. This approach cannot be used expeditiously when dealing with clients who may need longer and vigorous sessions. Existential is a philosophical approach to people and problems relating to being human or existing, and existential psychotherapy deals with life themes rather than techniques. Unlike CBT, Existential offers denigration because it does not pass examination which is not surprising. I emphasized earlier how it would be wise to use CBT approach in the school and the developmental issues that we as counselors are confronted with by our young students. Using the Existential approach would not be successful in this area. Existential therapy is different than many models of psychotherapy because it is an overarching way of thinking rather than a set of prescribed techniques and principles. Cognitive- Behavioral places too much emphasis on reformulating the client’s experience, whereas Existential promote being with the client instead of doing to the client. Some of the techniques used by counselors who uses the CBT approach are usually confronting damaging beliefs, changing client’s self-talk and language, debating irrational beliefs and assigning homework.
