Physiology
Introduction
Exercise physiology is the study of how the body responds to physical activity (Live Strong, 2013). This is important for athletes because it helps them understand how they train and whether they are capable of fulfilling the needs of the sport. Needs analysis is the process of identifying and evaluating needs… of people. The identification of needs is a process of describing problems… and possible solutions. (Titcomb, 2000:1). Needs analysis has an impact on physiology because it takes the athletes needs into consideration during physical activity.

As previously stated, the athlete plays football and they need a good level of fitness and aerobic endurance to keep fitness levels up all throughout the 90 minutes. Maximal aerobic power is the highest rate at which the body can utilize oxygen for energy production (Draper and Marshall, 2013:214). The athlete needs to train in order to reach maximal aerobic power, tests such as multistage fitness test, yoyo test and even V02 max tests can provide this. The intensity of the training well help to determine if the athlete will become fitter and being able to generate and maintain power output, by doing this, the athlete can utilize oxygen which will keep up their fitness levels and give them that head start over their opponents. Intensity of training is generally determined by monitoring the heart rate, which is an indirect way of estimating oxygen utilization by the body (Fox et al., 1993:291). When training in football, the athlete will be using their heart to utilize oxygen, by doing training that will raise the heart rate then over time the heart will become stronger and therefore more efficient. After training over duration of time, the heart rate decreases but cardiac output is maintained because of an increase in stroke volume, this maintains blood supply, removal of waste …show more content…

If the athlete wants to improve then they are recommended to do aerobic training, as this is what the yoyo test relies on. According to MedicineNet.com (2015) suggest doing walking, running and swimming to improve the aerobic capacity. This will improve how long the athlete lasts and as MedicineNet.com (2015) stated, aerobic exercise simulates the heart rate to be sustained over the period of the exercise. By training like that, then the athlete will adapt to the high demand and then therefore be able to last longer throughout not just the yoyo test but a football match
