Famous artist Pablo Picasso once said, “There are painters who transform the sun to a yellow spot, but there are others who, with the help of their art and their intelligence, transform a yellow spot into sun.” Art is something that is completely subjective and can be viewed or interpreted in such a vast number of ways. Someone may find something aesthetically pleasing, where another person may feel it is meaningless and hideous. That, however, is the true beauty of art. This evokes controversy on what truly is vandalism. Vandalism is any outside force coming in and disrupting the intended purpose of the property of someone else. An example of vandalism could be someone smashing a light outside of a bar, or someone hitting a car with a baseball bat. The definition of vandalism may seem pretty clear, but when art comes into play controversy arises. Within this movie, Banksy, a graffiti artist who paints on walls and public places that he does not own, marks his territory by adding his signature picture all around various parts of the city. He is doing this without permission of the owner’s of the “canvases” he utilizes. Whether it be walls, buildings, street signs, or doors, Banksy stops at nothing to cast his imagine in any public place possible. Is this art? Or could it be vandalism? Technically, this is vandalism because he never reveals himself and asks permission to utilize the canvases. It shows the “grey” area between art and vandalism. Banksy utilizes the world as his canvas, even without the permission of the actual owners, which is illegal. From painting on walls, buildings, windows, and poles, he stops at nothing to portray his work throughout the city. That’s the true beauty and nature of art, stopping at nothing to send your message to the world. Some may consider this vandalism, however in my opinion this is the start of new-age art.
