In this paper, I will demonstrate what my teaching philosophy is based on two different philosophies; they are progressivism and existentialism. Using these two philosophies, I will focus on the student rather than myself as the teacher. The focus is to create a flexible, responsible, and understandable environment for my students. In order to follow the Olivet’s School of Education slogan, “Professionals Influencing Lives”, I need to uncover my virtues in order to give students the best learning experience when I teach Math, Sunday school, or other subjects. In order to determine how to work with students and how to increase students’ interest in learning in the classroom, I will describe the two philosophies separately.
Progressivism is the gateway out of the traditional classroom. According to Sadker & Zittleman (2015), progressivism is a student-centered philosophy that provides students a flexible environment to learn different subjects through hand-on training; moreover, they learn from real-life experience. In a Christian class, one example of a real-life experience is going on a field trip to a nonprofit organization to feed poor people; students learn about Jesus’ teaching of love in class doing community work and explaining what it means to love others. The difference is that existentialism portrays student’s responsibility in his own learning (Sadker & Zittleman, 2015). Existentialism reminds students to discover their purpose in this world. Instead of objective truth, each student has the skills to uncover their purpose while teaching their favorite subjects (Sadker & Zittleman, 2015). For example, art can express a student’s individual expression on paper (Culp, 2015).
