The purpose of this posting is to discuss the nurses scope of practice as defined by the ANA and the state I live in. It will also describe how utilize the nursing process and scope in my practice. The nurses scope is described by the ANA as the what, where, who, why, how and who. Each of these are questions that need to be answered to complete the description of the nurses evolving practice. All nursing regardless of specialty have one scope. Nursing Standards, the Nursing process, and the Five tenets coincide to outline the nurses scope of practice. (2010)
The State of Michigan described the nurses scope of practice as the treatment, care, counselling and teaching of patients that have change in their health or need help with maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Nurses help patients that have a current illness and injury. Nurses also delegate and supervise less skilled staff that perform nursing task. Nurses perform under the supervision of a physician, advanced practice providers or dentist. (Scope of Practice of Health Professionals in the State of Michigan)

An example of how I use the nursing scope of practice is when I had a patient that arrived on the birthing unit and was in labor. I performed an initial physical assessment of the patient and took her vital signs. The patient had 3+ pitting edema and right epigastric pain. Her Vitals where all within normal limits except a mildly elevated blood pressure. I asked the patient if she had a history of any of these symptoms and she denied. I then called the physician and reported my assessment findings and received orders for preeclampsia labs. The labs came back very abnormal and the patient was diagnosed with severe preeclampsia and was started on mag sulfate. The patient delivered a healthy baby and was transferred to the postpartum floor in stable
This discussion board is about the nurse’s scope of practice. The purpose of this posting is to discuss the definition and standards of the nurse’s scope of practice as defined by the American Nurses Association (ANA) and by the Ohio Board of Nursing with an example of how to use the standards of practice. Per the ANA, when determining the nurse’s scope of practice there is no one specific explanation that can be provided due to the fact that registered nurses can have a general practice or a practice that is very specialized. The limits that are placed on a RN’s scope of practice will depend on a registered nurse’s education, type of nursing, years as a nurse, and the patients receiving care. At the basic level, every nurse’s practice
Both Nurse Practitioners and Nurse Practitioner-students work closely with patients to monitor their health and provide care for acute and chronic illnesses. However, in the academic-clinical setting, the NP-student may only perform this function at the discretion of the supervising NP. Although work environments and responsibilities bestowed upon these distinctive nurses can be quite different, Nurse Practitioners, Registered Nurses and students is bound to the same laws and regulations governed by all states and territories that have enacted a nurse practice act (NPA). The NPA itself is insufficient to provide the necessary guidance for the nursing profession, therefore each NPA establishes a state board of nursing (BON) that has the authority to develop administrative rules or regulations to clarify or make the governing practice law(s) more specific (NCSBN
I need further development in knowing what the scope of practice of an RPN is because at clinical I am unsure of the difference in roles of the RPN’s that are working on the units compared to the Registered Nurses (RN’s). I feel that knowing and understanding the scope of practice of an RPN is crucial, in order to ensure the safety of the patients, but also to protect your license as a nurse. Also, it is important to understand your role as a nurse to ensure the patients’ needs are being met, and to ensure you stay within your scope of practice while providing care. The CNO’s scope of practice statement is, “The practice of nursing is the promotion of health and the assessment of, the provision of, care for, and the treatment of, health conditions by supportive, preventive, therapeutic, palliative and rehabilitative means in order to attain or maintain optimal function” (College of Nurses of Ontario, 2015). The goal I set for myself is, I will learn and understand the scope of practice of an RPN in order to be accountable for all my actions as a future
Scope of practice is defined as the broad framework of procedures, actions and processes that are permitted under a specific licence of an allied health professional. This medical terminology is used by both the national and state licensing commissions for various professions, including nursing, midwifery and paramedicine. The scope of practice restricts and limits the allied health professional, under an act of law, to have undertaken specific education, followed regulation guidelines and registered under licensing bodies in order to practice in their individual health profession. Additionally, every individual health profession (nursing, paramedicine, midwifery, doctor, surgeon, etc.) has specific requirements and levels which define the scope of practice for each individual.

The scope of practice for the nurses and how to perform the duties within the scope of practice are discussed here. Scope of practice for nurses. Scope of practice refers to the actions, procedures or processes that are permitted to be done by a professional in his or her profession by the law (Anderson, 2013). All the health care professionals have this scope of practice, including nurses, which is governed by a governing body of the particular profession.... ...
The primary barrier to nurses being able to practice at their full potential is the states varied legislation (Fairman, Rowe, Hassmiller, & Shalala, 2011). The IOM (2011) report suggests that state scope of practice regulations should model the National Council of State Boards of Nursing Model Nursing Practice act and Administrative rules to provide legal authority to practice to the accomplished level of training. The IOM (2011) report also requested a review of states laws to identify potentially anticompetitive effects that do not protect the health and safety of the public. The new recommendations are to build a common ground with interdisciplinary groups and to include a diverse coalition for the Future of Nursing: Campaign for action (IOM,
INTRODUCTION There are many things that affect a student’s enrolment as a nurse the student must be competent in the many registration standards that the Nursing Midwifery Board of Australia have set. The stigmas attached to students with Impairments and or Criminal histories and the ineligibility to register. A career in the medical field is always evolving, and always needing more hands. I knew from a young age that helping people is what I was meant to do, and from then on out every step I took was the way to a successful career in nursing. It is a profession that allows you to see people at their worst, all while helping them become their best. The most important task for nursing students is to create a clear pathway for our education, and to be sure to follow that plan accordingly. When choosing this career, I had to access my own strengths and weaknesses and really establish clear goals for myself and evaluate if I had what it takes to be a part of this diverse and skilled profession. I also decided not only not only do I need to set professional goals for this career, personal goals are important as well.

According to the American Nurses Association, nursing is defined as “the protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, facilitation of healing, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, groups, communities, and populations” (American Nurses Association, 2016). Nurses can perform at many different levels depending on their scope of practice which is defined by the board of nursing in one’s state of residence. It is important as nurses to understand and follow
The nursing profession is very diverse and brings forth many opportunities and achievements. I personally think that the most meaningful ones come from direct patient care. As a nurse, I have taken care of numerous patients in different fields. At the end of day when I look back and know that I made a difference in someone’s life by caring for them in the most difficult time of their life, makes me feel very happy and proud. My passion for nursing and the desire to learn something new at every chance I get has enabled me to be an exceptional nurse, however, I have come across limitations in my scope of practice when taking care of patients. I have been practicing as a nurse for almost six years, and now I have a clear picture of what I want
The nurse should look the Nursing Practice Act (NPA) and licensing board rules and regulations to clarify the legal scope of nursing practice. “The nurse practice act defines the scope and limitation of professional nursing practice” (Cherry & Jacob,2017, p.125). In fact, since the procedure is new, complex, and invasive the nurse should read the state’s nurse practice act manual before touching or starting anything. The state’s nurse practice act specifies what the nurse can and cannot do. The nurse can find the rules and limitation in the guidelines which are what is integrated or exclusion in the scope of practice as defined by the nurse practice act and rules. The nurse could cite for disciplinary action or fine if she or he violates the
To briefly summarize, the report identifies nurses as an important factor in enabling access to high quality, affordable health care. This was supported by the development of four fundamental recommendations. The first suggests that nurses be allowed to practice within the scope of their degree. This becomes evident in the differences in state laws that pertain to nurse’s who have acquired advanced degrees, such as the nurse practitioner.... ...
