In the past, artist tried to make paintings beautiful and realistic. However, as we stepped into the 20th century, the art style of realism began losing popularity. Often classical artist created painting of buildings or people. It was very set as if that was the only way paintings could be painted. As one can observe now, a great deal of contemporary art is abstract and somewhat bizarre. While classical art was made to look aesthetically pleasing, contemporary art values expressing one 's feeling and being original. Contemporary art shows the new social value of being explicitly expressive with your emotions and not being afraid of being unique. Without realizing it people have grown accustomed to art being an interpretation of the mind. Melissa Ho, assistant curator at Hirshhorn Museum explains “...it seems almost natural that the way you think of works of art are expression of an individual view.” Modern art is unique to the artist because of the society’s new emphasis on being innovative. This is why contemporary art can sometimes be odd or not look like any specific thing. Art has grown to be extremely complex. Modernism is a powerful movement that has changed art
At the turn of the 20th and further into the 21st century, art began to drop the baggage carried from the masters of the Renaissance and began a trajectory of change. Artists began challenging the schools and galleries of art around the world in an effort to break away from the chains that were wrapped around them in an effort to control the basis of art. Strange patters, shapes, colors and spaces emerged as each one challenged every norm known to the artistic circle. Critics and viewers alike were suddenly required to think less about the topics of paintings and more about their formal aspects. As decades passed, the singularity of art began to intensify and different forms of art demanded the same recognition as others before. Liberation
This time period was a time for the breaking of traditions. “The arts were now beginning to break all of the rules since they were trying to keep pace with all of the theoretical and technological advances that were changing the whole structure of life.” (History of Modernism). This era was the death of
The Modernist movement in Australia is inspired by the European avant-garde. In the mid-1910s, the first wave of modernism is felt through the influx of migrants, exhibitions and expatriates. In the following five decades, modernism experienced turbulent changes like economic depression, global wars, technological advances and massive social change, which undoubtedly further influenced the artistic output of Australian modernists. The introduction of modernism to Australia is a more complex phenomenon. Its complex and unfamiliar language often experienced passionate and strong resistance from the general masses.
Modernism indicates a branch of movements in art (Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, Fauvism; Cubism; Expressionism; Dada, Surrealism, Pop Art. Etc.) with distinct characteristics, it firmly rejects its classical precedent and classical style, what Walter Benjamin would refer to as “destructive liquidation of the traditional value of the cultural heritage”; and it explores the etiology of a present historical situation and of its attendant forms of self-consciousness in the West. Whereas Modernity is often used as ...
Modernism is the term of deviating from the norm. In the early 1900s, modernism influenced women’s role in society by providing more opportunities, jobs, and role models for girls today, in society.
From the creation of art to its modern understanding, artists have strived to perform and perfect a photo realistic painting with the use of complex lines, blend of colors, and captivating subjects. This is not the case anymore due to the invention of the camera in 1827, since it will always be the ultimate form of realism. Due to this, artists had the opportunities to branch away from the classical formation of realism, and venture into new forms such as what is known today as modern art. In the examination of two well known artists, Pablo Picasso and Jackson Pollock, we can see that the artist doesn’t only intend for the painting to be just a painting, but more of a form of telling a scene through challenging thoughts, and expressing of the artists emotion in their creation.
Modern art serves to immerse us more thoroughly in a scene by touching on more than just our sight. Artists such as Grosz, and Duchamp try to get us to feel instead of just see. It seems that this concept has come about largely as a way to regain identity after shedding the concepts of the Enlightenment. “Philosophers, writers, and artists expressed disillusionment with the rational-humanist tradition of the Enlightenment. They no longer shared the Enlightenment's confidence in either reason's capabilities or human goodness...” (Perry, pg. 457) It is interesting to follow art through history and see how the general mood of society changed with various aspects of history, and how events have a strong connection to the art of the corresponding time.
Modernism is defined in Merriam-Webster's Dictionary as "a self-conscious break with the past and a search for new forms of expression." While this explanation does relate what modernism means, the intricacies of the term go much deeper. Modernism began around 1890 and waned around 1922. Virginia Wolf once wrote, "In or about December, 1910, human character changed." (Hurt and Wilkie 1443). D.H. Lawrence wrote a similar statement about 1915: "It was 1915 the old world ended." (Hurt and Wilkie 1444). The importance of the exact dates of the Modernist period are not so relevant as the fact that new ideas were implemented in the era. Ideas that had never before been approached in the world of literature suddenly began emerging in the works of many great authors. Two of the pioneer Modernist writers were Joseph Conrad and T.S. Eliot. The tendencies to question the incontestable beliefs embedded in all thinking and to focus on the inner self dominated. Old viewpoints were tossed aside to make way for the discovery of modern man's personal spirituality. Two works that are considered important forbears in the Modern period are T.S. Eliot's The Wasteland and Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness.
