We have all committed a crime, whether the crime was in childlike

foolishness or in a more serious manner. In Nathaniel Hawthorne’s book The

Scarlet Letter however he raises the argument of whether or not the characters

have become forgiven. Hester Prynne undoubtedly became forgiven through

her laborious course of redemption which she completed through the wearing

of the Scarlet Letter. Nevertheless, this raises the issue of whether or not

Hawthorne has done enough to become forgiven as well. Through his course

of penance he has become forgiven as has Hester because they owned up to

their sins.

“Conscience” or Pearl, Hester’s only child who sparked this story. The

following excerpt from the book shows a reply to Mistress Hibbins invitation

to come to the woods, “ I must tarry home and keep watch over my little

Pearl, if they had taken her away from then I would have gladly gone into the

woods with thee.” As shown Pearl stopped her from committing worse sin by needing Hester’s constant attention which stops her mother from doing many

things. Accordingly the two quotes show that Hester Prynne has become

forgiven for her sin because she owned up to it and did not downplay her

crime and as well as doing these things she she proved she has become

forgiven a fact that should go undisputed.

Nathaniel Hawthorne also has become forgiven though the following of his

own moral and by his confession. One of the reasons Hawthorne has become

forgiven started from what was a moral of a story that became a reason

Hawthorne has become forgiven. The words that make up his moral include

“Be true! Be true! Be true!”. Throughout his life he stayed true to his moral

because he wrote an entire book based on sin and forgiveness and within
