In, “The Gift of Magi,” a short story written by O. Henry, the two main characters are blinded by loved and they do anything they can to please their significant other. O. Henry demonstrates that concept with irony and figurative language. In the beginning of the story, a character named Della is heartbroken to realize she can’t afford to buy her husband Jim a present he deserves. She is seen looking at, “a gray cat walking a gray fence in a gray backyard”(6). The gray and dullness of the world is not literal, but represents Della’s sadness for not being wealthy enough to gift a present to Jim.
