In 1971, at the T. C. Williams High School, Boone is appointed the head coach job to try and prevent racial tensions to arise. He eventually accepts the offer when he sees what it means to the black community. Yoast is then asked to be the assistant coach's and initially refuses, but reconsiders after the white players will not play without him. Yoast takes up the position of defensive coach under Boone. Just before the semi-finals, the chairman of the school board tells Yoast that he will be inducted into the Hall of Fame if the Titans lose one game, implying he wants Boone to be dismissed over his race. Yoast realizes that this is unethical and does not go allow the referees to officiate fairly. The Titans win and advance to the finals but Yoast loses his nomination for the Hall of Fame induction. While celebrating the victory, Gerry is severely injured in a car accident. Although Bertier is unable to play, the team wins the state championship. Bertier would remain a paraplegic for the rest of his life. Ten years later, Bertier dies in another automobile accident by a drunk driver. His family, coaches, and other former teammates reunite to attend his funeral. The central focus of this movie is the racial divide and how they use American football to try and unite people of different colour. Management And Leadership A manager is appointed in a position of authority which enables him to insist on people doing as he/she instructs. A leader has the skill to make people aware of the opportunities of pursuing a certain course of action, therefore creating a desire in people to follow him/her to achieve a common goal. Management Styles: Democratic: Allows subordinates to provide their opinion and participate in the decision-making process. It ensures commitment from people involved but may lead to slower decision-making. This is displayed when Coach Boone allows the team to “warm up differently”. Autocratic: A leader hardly allows for input from subordinates and makes all decisions. Coach Boone forces the teammates to sit next to the different race of them (Gerry and Julius). They also have to involuntary rooming together at the camp as their seat partner. He also forces them to get to know each other; otherwise they will train harder and longer. In the first team meeting says, “ This is not a democracy, this is a dictatorship. I am the law.” Transformational: A leader that motivates employees by helping them to understand the meaning of their work. It builds trust and confidence between teammates and managers. They are inspired and motivated and this creates an improved performance. Coach Boone gives a few motivational speeches during the film but the most significant one is at the cemetery. “If we too don’t come together, we too will be destroyed”. Yoast uses this leadership style in the scene “ I don’t want them to get gain another yard” and “make sure they remember the day the played the titans”. He also encourages Louie to do better in his schoolwork because he thinks he has potential. The situational leadership style: A combination of all existing leadership/managerial styles. The manager will adapt whatever manager style is required in the specific situation. The Coaches as well Gerry and Julius uses a combination of the above styles and more. Motivational factors: Non- Monetary factors Job enrichment: Player gets more responsibility and often more authority. Player feels he is trustworthy and believes he can achieve his full potential. Sunshine is given more responsibility and shows his full potential when he is placed in the quarterback position. Empowerment and advancement of the player: Player is given opportunities to develop by learning new skills and gaining wider knowledge to be applied when they are offered new challenges and responsibilities. This is seen when Yoast places Petey in the defence. Recognition of good work- Boone awards the man of the match by giving them the game ball. Conflict Management Conflict can be defined as the negative difference of opinion between people due to a disagreement over a specific issue. Conflict arises quite often in the film due to the racial divide. Functional vs. Dysfunctional Conflict Functional conflict is where a situation is dealt with in a healthy, constructive manner between groups or individuals and where they acknowledge each other’s opinions and compromise to resolve the conflict. It leads to more innovation, creativity, and higher productivity, therefore results in a positive outcome. This is shown in the scene when Julius and Gerry have an argument after training. Gerry realizes that “attitude reflects leadership”. The conflict between these two becomes resolved due to their love for the sport and being capable to accept each other differences. Scene: Gerry confronts Ray for not blocking and Julius and Gerry become really close after this training when they start chanting, “ Left side! Strong side!” The relationship of the team becomes stronger due to the multiplier effect. Scene: Campbell and Bertier break up a fight (due to racism) in the institution. Possible Outcomes • It creates awareness that there is a problem: Gerry becomes aware that he is only criticizing Julius about his attitude but not his white friends. He realizes that Julius is not only one at fault. It is everyone’s fault, including Gerry’s. • Misconceptions are cleared: Misunderstandings are cleared in the same scene where the captains decide to finally communicate with each other. • Clarification of individuals’ views: Refer to statement above. Dysfunctional conflict is where a situation is dealt with in an unhealthy manner. It is a result of people’s their ambitions and egos, misperceptions and unwillingness to compromise. Possible Outcomes • Not capable of trusting teammate: Ray not blocking for his team. • Blaming each other: Ray and Gerry • Can result in violence: Gerry and Julius in their room begin fighting. Ray pushing his teammate to get a cup of water. In the long run, it resulted in a positive outcome. Reasons for conflict • Difference in backgrounds: Black vs. White • Different personalities: The captains’ ambitions and egos • Resistance to change: Trying to create a team with both, black and white players. Recommendations Accommodating approach- being cooperative and sacrifice some of his/ her beliefs to understand another point of view. Yoast puts aside his ego in the final game and requests for Boone’s advice. This is also seen with the coaches’ daughters when they try to get along. Collaborating- trying to work together in a situation that fully satisfies everybody involved. Every teammate forgets about their differences and accepted each other because they all had a common goal, which was to win the championship. Professionalism And Ethics Professionalism is the ability and skill expected of a professional. Ethics are the moral principles that a person follows or abides. This determines his behaviour and attitude towards any particular situation. Professional Codes- Regulate the behaviour of people practicing a particular profession. The teammates have to respect each other and work as a unit. Coach Boone proves his authority and reminds Gerry of this professional code in the scene “ Who’s your daddy?” He had to obey Boone’s orders if he wanted to be on the team. The Principle- based theory The person’s principles, values and morals about what is right and wrong, determines if actions are ethical or not. Yoast is confronted by Boone because he questioned his authority during the game when he comforted Petey and placed him in defensive squad. He only showed sympathy to the black players, which is unethical and Boone makes him realize that. Yoast is offered a spot in the Hall of Fame if he loses one game and gets Boone fired. This went against his values and he threatened the referees during the game that if they do not start making fair calls he will take them down with him, sacrificing his chance to be in the Hall of Fame. The Consequence- based theory The outcome of the action will determine if the action is ethical or not. This theory is displayed in scene where Ray does not block for one of his teammates, leaving Rev injured. The outcome of this unethical action resulted in Ray getting kicked off the team by Gerry. The Utilitarian theory The decision of unethical and ethical action is based on what is best for the greatest number of people.
This can relate to the example given above. Another example is in the scene where Alan decides to give up his chance to play in the final game because he knew Petey deserved it more than him. It was a selfless and generous act. He knew Petey would contribute to the overall performance of the team so he sacrificed his position because did not want to be the reason their team lost the game. Issues that are seen as unethical Conflict of interest is seen with the coaches and captains. It is seen with Ray and Gerry. The concerns of the two players were not compatible. Corruption / bribes – Yoast has to lose the game in order to win the spot in the Hall of Fame. (CSR) Businesses persevere to behave in an ethical manner by contributing to the economic and social development of employees and the community at large. Although this film had nothing to do with CSR, their actions still benefited the community the way a CSR program would. The people came more united and formed a functioning society and it created a sustainable difference. Conclusion Remember the Titans is a very moving film, which is about the courage of individuals and how a group that is united can use their power of teamwork to make a difference in society. It is a true story and it conveys many positive messages throughout the film. It shows how a community can over obstacles such as racism. This film is relevant to the content outlined in the SAG document for Business Studies Grade 12. It covered many chapters in the syllabus such as Conflict Management (how to deal with it in certain situations), Ethics (how to interpret if a scenario is ethical or not), Professionalism (how to act and behave in a professional environment), and the different leadership styles and which one to use in a particular situation is presented in the film. Coach Boone used these techniques and strategies to teach the teammates discipline and earn the respect of the players and the people in the society. This film showed how these chapters are used and adapted in reality and that it can be very helpful and useful if you apply this knowledge in real- life situations.

(Linder 1) Joe Jackson, the best player on the team, was making $6,000 a year. (1) So if this team had a weakness it would be their desire for more money. Sport Sullivan, a gambler, proposed a fix to Chick Gandil in which the White Sox would lose the World Series and the would pay them to do so. (1) Obviously this idea sounded very appealing to Chick Gandil. So Chick Gandil agreed to do it if he would be paid $80,000.
Remember the Titans is a movie about a high school football team that is diligently trying to win a state championship. The main obstacle that is in the way of them working together and getting the state championship is the fact that their team has both black and white male players. Today, it would be common for us to play with interracial people but in the year nineteen seventy-one it was not common at all. It was decided that Coach Boone (an African American), would be the head coach for the new football team at T.C. Williams High School. Coach Boone asks Coach Yoast, the former coach, to stay and be his assistant coach. He agrees and the white players also join the team along with the blacks. The team goes to Gettysburg College for camp where none of the teammates are comfortable with each other. Eventually, the team finally gets along at the camp and color is no longer an issue with the teammates.

In the United States, this discrimination can have a strong effect on many aspects of society such as home life and employment. A large gap between Caucasians and African-Americans still exists in America. In this film, there are more white people than there are black people. In terms of major roles, there are about five black characters and more than fifteen white characters. Although the degree of importance of the black characters is pretty high, the quantity still does not compare to the white characters.

The movie I decided to analyze was Remember the Titans. I examined the dilemmas and ethical choices that were displayed throughout the story. In the early 1970s, two schools in Alexandria Virginia integrate forming T.C. Williams High School. The Caucasian head coach of the Titans is replaced by an African American coach (Denzel Washington) from North Carolina, which causes a fury among white parents and students. Tensions arise quickly among the players and throughout the community when players of different races are forced together on the same football team. Coach Boone is a great example of a leader. He knows he faces a tough year of teaching his hated team. But, instead of listening to the hating town or administrators, Boone pushes his team to their limits and forces good relationships between players, regardless of race. His vision for the team involves getting the players concerned in what the team needs to become, and not what it is supposed to be; a waste. Boone is a convincing leader with a brutal, boot camp approach to coaching. He believes in making the players re-build themselves as a team. When Boone says, You will wear a jacket, shirt, and tie. The scholars expounds that Black athletes were commodities on the playing field to help win games and bring in revenue to their respected schools. However, the schools were just as eager and willing to leave their Black players behind and dishonoring the player as a part of the team. Therefore, not compromising the team’s winning and bring in profits for the school. Sadly, Black athletes at predominately White institutions (PWIs) who believed that they were bettering the live of themselves and their families members by going to college and playing collegiate sports to increase their post secondary careers. However, these athletes were only “show ponies” for their schools. Unfortunately, Black athletes had allegiance to their school; however, the school turned their backs on the athletes to protect the profit and notoriety of the school and the programs. Money and respect from White fans and spectators were more important to the PWIs than standing up for the respect of their Black players. Racial bigotry in sports was rampant and it was only going to get worse.
