Remember the Titans: Interpersonal Relations
In 1971, the United States Supreme Court issued a ruling that ended all state enforced
segregation in public schools. During this same year T. C. Williams High
School, located in Alexandria, Virginia was integrated. This is the inspiration for the movie
Remember the Titans, starring Denzel Washington who portrays Herman Boone, the head
Coach of the football team, the Titans. Even during the difficult time of integration people can put aside their differences and work together as a team.

He was later appointed head Coach over a winning white coach; he is reluctant to accept the position because a similar situation happened to him when a white Coach had been appointed over him in South Carolina. He finally accepts the head coach position with Support from the black residents who see him as a symbol of pride and admiration that is absent in their community.
The film starts with an uprising after a white storeowner kills a black teenager. This incident Highlights Prejudices. The teenager was labeled a thief because of the color of his skin and the unjustifiable murder causes racial tensions that exist as a result of the integration of the high schools.
Boone has a very tough exterior, had a difficult childhood, and is a seasoned
Civil rights activist. His upbringing and early struggles influence his behavior and his
leadership style. When Boone first meets the Titan coaching staff, he knows that he is not

games. When Boone becomes head coach, he immediately reinforces his authority and control to set the tone for the staff and the team. During summer camp, he sent a Verbal Message making it clear, “This is a dictatorship. I am the law.” He relies deeply on his position of power to achieve his main goal of providing structure and order. Bill Yoast is a respected member of the community, a winning coach who cares about his players. However, his background and position in the community give him a different attitude and leadership style. Regardless of having numerous head coach offers from other high schools in northern Virginia, his calm Acceptance of the assistant Coach position under Boone to prove his support of his players. In the beginning, he tries to control the situation as an assistant Coach, but Boone immediately emphasizes his power and makes it clear who is the head coach. He becomes Coach Boone’s conscience and repeatedly warns him not to push the athletes too far. When he was given the opportunity get his team back, he gives up his personal goal of making it to the Hall of Fame for the sake of the team. He does it without looking for appreciation or credit. He is even able to complement Coach Boone at the end of summer camp for his fine work. Gerry Bertier and Julius Campbell are the unofficial leaders of the white and black teams respectively. They have being place into this position because of their athleticism, personal convictions, and need to protect their “brothers.” Bertier initially becomes team leader by learning to set aside his prejudice and focus on the team, regardless of color. Turning Point of the story is the relationship that develops between Bertier and Campbell that leads the way for most of the team to come together. The leaders are forced to face many issues that could tear the team apart: a black Coach appointed over a qualified white Coach, contradictory leadership styles between Boone and Yoast, conspiracies of the school officials and other governing bodies, racism in the South, a divided team due to skin color being forced to play together, and a separated couching staff and Coach Boone suspicious of Yoast possibly sabotaging his efforts.
The two men have to work as one put aside their pride to accept help from each other implementing Conflict Management/Strategies to set an example for the players under their charge.
Coach Yoast’ realizes that his team is being set up to fail by the Betrayal of the governing body which plots with the officials of the game to take points away from the Titans to prevent them from winning the game which would reflect badly on Coach Boone so that he will lose his job. Coach Yoast does not go along with their plot which costs him his Hall of Fame designation.
Coach Yoast established an understanding of the dynamics of teamwork and issues of
race. Throughout training camp when the athletes were forced to run and re-run drills, he
allows Bertier and another teammate to work through their differences rather than
getting involved himself. This allowed Bertier, a white player, the chance to show Social Support for his black teammates and improve trust on the
field. The film focuses on the issue of race and the way students' perceptions gradually changes from one of fear to one of understanding. One specific interest is the relationship between Campbell and Bertier, an African American defensive player and the white team captain. As the movie progresses, the animosity between the two slowly disappears and is replaced by Trust and mutual friendship as they work at becoming better football players. Towards the end of the movie, this friendship is expressed as Bertier, hospitalized from a car accident and left paralyzed, he asks Campbell to visit him at his bedside. When the nurse states that only family is allowed in, Gerry turns to her saying, “Alice can’t you see the family resemblance?” The principles and values held by many of the characters in the film change over the course of the film as a result of Coach Boone’s and Coach Yoast’s influence. It is demonstrated in their belief racial equality and love for football helps the team, and ultimately the town, begin to come to terms with the issue of race in America’s schools. The movie portrays how one group has the power and ability to change the notions of an entire town and society. The Titans are able to eliminate the racial tension and division in Alexandria and create a more equal and unified community. Race and socialization are seen throughout the movie and play a big role in the Titan’s journey. Exploring this topic and viewing this movie provides an inspiration to many people. It inspires everyone who has to deal with racism. It reinforces the concept that anything is possible, and all one needs is determination and courage.

Jim Valvano, otherwise known as “Jimmy V”, was a college basketball player, coach, and broadcaster. This paper will cover Jimmy and define his true leadership qualities. Jimmy was an icon in the sports world not only for his coaching ability. He taught the world that leaders need a vision, leaders need to connect with their followers, and that leaders learn from their followers. Jimmy defied the rules and transformed his players into exceptionally good players and even better people. He taught more than basketball to his players and reached outside of his coaching arena to touch the lives of people across the world.
The first personal traits that Coach Dale was forced to exhibit were his toughness and his assertiveness. On his first night in Hickory he met the men of town in the barbershop who were all willing to provide their experience and insight on the team and how to coach. Coach Dale had enough self confidence to know that none of these “insights” were going to help the Hickory team win basketball games and let them know they weren’t welcome by turning his back and walking out. Additionally, he was forced to demonstrate his toughness twice more on the first day of practice by telling the temporary coach, “Secondly, your days of coaching are over,” and then by standing up to the group of men after he dismissed Buddy from the team. These actions made no friends of the men; however, th...
We may be behind on the scoreboard at the end of the game but if you play like that, we cannot be defeated.” He used pathos to hit the player’s soul by explaining himself, explaining that he doesn’t want the team to be the champion by winning, he wanted the team to be the champion by showing their hard work and their passion on the field. And also the coach is using logos by bringing up the six Sons of Marshall, the six players, the six teammates who went away by a plane
The town of Messina revolved their life around the football team, so they knew everything about anything that happened with the boys. Coach Eddie Rake was a thick headed individual who continuously pushed his players past their breaking point every day. Practices included the many players puking and the death of one after their daily bleacher run that the boys dreaded. Games included one breaking his hand, Rake becoming unconscious, and the team “just doing the impossible” of winning a State Championship with no coaches after being down 31-0 at halftime (Grisham 144). Like every person in Messina, Rake has two sides to him; the shrewd side and the compassionate side. Rake’s many personalities made each and every person in Messina have a different opinion of him. “The question is, ‘do I love Eddie Rake, or do I hate him (Grisham 223)?’” Coach Rake loved every one of his players, but he had a reputation to maintain which made people think differently about him.
Although the film did not examine in detail the knowledge coach Herman Boone possessed before he began his position with the Titans, it shows glimpses into his experience and wisdom. Boone clearly knew and loved football, as evidenced by his hours of dedication and labor. In the scene where he is first introduced to coach Yoast, he describes his past experience as a coach in North Carolina, and his previous winning seasons. Coach
The movie "Remember the Titans" is a character education filled film for all ages. To summarize, this movie takes place in the year nineteen seventy-one and follows the issue of racism. Two high schools in the town of Alexandria, Virginia are being integrated into an African American and Caucasian school, and that mix includes the football team. The movie follows the story of their development. At first, the two races sit, talk, and practice separate. After one practice camp, and one passionate coach, the boys learn to respect and become friendly with each other. However, after the two week practice camp is up and they go back to school, the rest of the high school does not understand why the football players have changed. However, the football
Remember the Titans is a film based on the true story of Coach Herman Boone, who tries to integrate a racially divided team. Throughout training camp and the season, Boone and Yoast 's black and white players learn to accept each other, to work together, and that football knows no race. As they learn from each other, Boone and Yoast also learn from them and in turn, the whole town learns from the team, the Titans. Thus, they are prepared to pursue the State Championship and to deal with and some adversity that threatens to effect their season.
“Remember the Titians” is based on a true story of African American football coach, Harman Boone; traveled to Alexandria, Virginia to coach the T.C. Williams Titans. Coach Boone faced a difficult task coaching at a primary Caucasian school in early 1970. The Caucasion players were reluctant to play for a black coach. He also had an awkward relationship with assistant coach, Bill Yoast. Not only did Coach Boone and his family face challenges with his team and colleges, there was also challenges with the communities. As these two coaches began to work, sync and show their truthfulness and principle to the young men they were coaching, they and the community began to make a strong impact and everyone will always, remember the Titians.

This is his first year here as the head football coach and being the head coach in a community where football is everything and everyone is expecting state champions this year he has a lot of pressure on him. Coach Eric Taylor had the star team, great family, and a highly praised name in the Dillon community. When he loses his star player Jason Street his career and job gets put on the line and he has to start all over by building the team up from such a big loss. Everyone in the community is putting pressure on him and his family by telling him he might want to go ahead and pack his bags because with a losing season as he is having he won’t be welcome in the community much longer. With everyone in his ear telling him what to do and a team that is slowly falling apart and not being a team he has a big hurdle to get over that seems to be doing nothing but getting bigger. Even though he has a big weight to carry on his shoulders he has hope and keeps his head up by taking charge and doing his job as a football coach and staying true to himself. With some discipline and determination, he fights back and starts to regain his team being the light at the end of the tunnel for them and
Although there were many concepts that were present within the movie, I choose to focus on two that I thought to be most important. The first is the realistic conflict theory. Our textbook defines this as, “the view that prejudice...
It is clear to us that Boone did in fact face a challenge that he overcame. He wanted to be accepted by the community by proving that he was a valued member of it, a valuable football coach. In order to do this he had to prove that he could coach The Titans through all of their games, this required team unity. He gained the respect and acceptance of the football players in order to encourage their unity. He knew that only through their unity could they succeed. It is not the mere challenge that Boone faced that gained merit; it was what he succeeded in doing that was the real important achievement, succeeding to prove to the community that they could indeed be united.
At camp, he made his team meet each other to relieve tension. They all had to put aside their differences and learn about each member’s likes and dislikes. If they didn’t, they would continue having daily practices. He wanted Yoast to take the position of assistant coach to have people listen to himself. Players and their parents didn’t want to play unless Yoast was involved. He did both of these things treating people with respect and also attempting to receive
